1. 108th meeting of the World
Bank Development Committee
held in Morocco
 The World Bank and the
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
jointly organized the 108th meeting
of the Development Committee in
Marrakesh, Morocco from October
9-15, 2023. In this, statements were
given by World Bank President Ajay
Banga, IMF Managing Director
Kristalina Georgieva and Morocco's
Economy and Finance Minister
Nadia Fetta Alaoui.
 The agenda of this meeting was
"Ending poverty on a habitable
planet – Report to the Governors on

Development of the World Bank".
India was represented by Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She
said that India supports the new
vision of the World Bank to make
the world poverty-free and livable.
 Smt Sitharaman said it was
heartening to see progress in the
G-20 countries' shared goal of
making the World Bank better,
bigger and more effective to
address national and global
challenges.
 The Boards of Governors of the
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
and the World Bank Group (WBG)
typically meet once a year in
September/October to discuss the
work of their respective
institutions. Traditionally held in
Washington for two consecutive
years and in another member state
for the third year.
 World Bank
 It was established in 1944 as the
International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development
(IBRD) along with the IMF. IBRD

2. India got 111th position in
Global Hunger Index-2023
 India ranks 111th out of 125
countries in the Global Hunger
Index (GHI) 2023, with its progress
against hunger almost stalled since
2015. India was ranked 107th out of
121 countries in the 2022 edition of
the Global Hunger Index (GHI).
 The Ministry of Women and Child
Development (MoWCD) has once
again called it a "flawed
measurement of hunger that does
not reflect the actual situation in
India".
 India's ranking is based on a Global
Hunger Index score of 28.7 on a

100-point scale. The undernutrition
rate in India was 16.6 percent and
the under-five mortality rate was
3.1 percent, the prevalence of
anemia among women aged 15 to
24 years was 58.1 percent.
 India has the highest child wasting
rate in the world at 18.7 percent,
indicating acute undernutrition.
India's neighboring countries are
Pakistan (102nd), Bangladesh
(81st), Nepal (69th) and Sri Lanka
(60th).
 Global Hunger Index
 First published in 2006 by the US-
based International Food Policy
Research Institute (IFPRI) and
Germany-based Welthungerhilfe, in
2007, Irish NGO Concern Worldwide
also became co-publisher.
 The GHI score is based on a formula
that combines four indicators,
including undernutrition, child
stunting, child wasting and child
mortality. Where 0 is the best score
(no hunger) and 100 is the worst.
This places the severity of hunger
in India in the "severe" category.
 Key facts
 The 2023 GHI score for the world is
18.3, which is considered moderate.
However, this is only one point
lower than the world's 2015 GHI
score of 19.1. Globally, the share of
undernourished people, one of the

actually increased from 7.5% in
2017 to 9.2% in 2022, reaching about
735 million.
 South Asia and Africa south of the
Sahara are the regions in the world
with the highest hunger levels,
each with a GHI score of 27.0,
indicating severe hunger.
3. International Day for
Disaster Risk Reduction 2023
observed on 13 October
 On 13 October, the global
community celebrates the
International Day for Disaster Risk
Reduction, an opportunity to
acknowledge the progress being
made towards reducing disaster
risks and losses in life, livelihoods
and health.
 The theme for the year 2023 is:
Fighting inequality for a resilient

disasters and inequality.
 The International Day for Disaster
Risk Reduction was established in
1989 after the United Nations
General Assembly called for a day
to promote a global culture of risk-
awareness and disaster reduction.
 At the Third United Nations World
Conference on Disaster Risk
Reduction in Sendai, Japan in 2015,
the international community was
reminded that disasters impact
hardest at the local level. Earlier
the Hyogo Framework (2005-2015)
was in force.
4. The fourth G20 Finance
Ministers and Central Bank
Governors (FMCBGs) meeting was
held in Marrakesh city of Morocco.
 The fourth and final meeting of the
G20 Finance Ministers and Central
Bank Governors (FMCBGs) under

the Indian Chairmanship was held
in Marrakesh, Morocco on 12-13
October 2023 on the sidelines of the
International Monetary Fund-
World Bank Annual Meeting.
 At this meeting, the G20 FMCBGs
unanimously urged G20 Finance
Ministers and Central Bank
Governors to consider three
building blocks – strengthening
their financial capacity, including
private capital mobilization,
implementation of capital
adequacy framework
recommendations and capital
enhancement and urge MDBs to
work together as a system. Going
forward, It called for continued
work on the report's
recommendations to build better,
larger and more effective MDBs.
 FMCBG also adopted the G20
Roadmap on Crypto Assets. This
roadmap will help coordinate
global policy as well as develop
strategies and regulations that
mitigate the impacts of crypto
assets on emerging markets and
developing economies (EMDEs).
 G20
 The G20 was founded in 1999 in
response to several world economic
crises. The 18th G20 Summit was
held on September 9 and 10, 2023 in
New Delhi, India. This was the first
summit that India hosted the

summit of G20 countries. The
theme of this summit was
"Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", which
means "The World is One Family".
Brazil is the upcoming chairperson
of G20.
 As an important step towards
increasing the representation of
developing countries in this forum,
the G20 countries decided to admit
the African Union as a permanent
member.
 Global Biofuels Alliance is an India-
led initiative that aims to create a
coalition of governments,
international organizations and
industries to promote biofuels
adoption. Nine initial member
countries – India, USA, Brazil,
Argentina, Bangladesh, Italy,
Mauritius, South Africa and UAE.
 An MoU was signed between the
governments of India, the US, Saudi
Arabia, the European Union, the
United Arab Emirates, France,
Germany and Italy for the
establishment of the India-Middle
East-Europe Economic Corridor
(IMEC).

5. According to the Ministry of Statistics
and Program Implementation, the female
labor force participation rate in India has
increased to 37 percent.
 According to the Periodic Labor
Force Survey Report 2022-23
released by the Ministry of
Statistics and Program
Implementation on October 9, 2023,
the Female Labor Force
Participation Rate (FLFPR) in India
has reached 37.0 percent with a
significant increase of 4.2
percentage points. It has been
recorded at 25.4% in urban areas
and 41.5% in rural areas.
 According to data shared by the
Ministry of Women and Child
Development, the female labor
force participation rate is 23.3
percent in 2017-18, 24.5 percent in
2018-19, 30 percent in 2019-20, 32.5
percent in 2020-21 and 20.5 percent

 Worker Population Ratio (WPR)
 In rural areas, the WPR increased
from 48.1% in 2017-18 to 59.4% in
2022-23, while in urban areas it
increased from 43.9% to 47.7%.
 The WPR for men in India increased
from 71.2% in 2017-18 to 76.0% in
2022-23 and the WPR for women
increased from 22.0% to 35.9%.
 Unemployment Rate (UR)
 In rural areas, the UR declined
from 5.3% in 2017-18 to 2.4% in

2022-23, while in urban areas it
declined from 7.7% to 5.4%.
 The UR for men in India is projected
to decline from 6.1% in 2017-18 to
3.3% in 2022-23 and the UR for
women is projected to decline from
5.6% to 2.9%.
