Practical application case study 1

You are an electrician working in an industrial plant. A circuit contains eight incandescent lamps connected in series across 480 volts. One lamp has burned out,
and you must determine which one is defective. You have available a voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter. Which meter would you use to determine which lamp
is defective in the shortest possible time? Explain how you would use this meter and why.

The task presented is to identify a defective bulb from a circuit consisting of eight incandescent lamps connected in series across 480 volts. A break in the circuit
was caused due to a bulb being burnt out. To determine the defective bulb, A voltmeter will be used as the most suitable and quickest method for the task.
Since the circuit does not need to be deenergized, the voltmeter would be cautiously used to test the voltage between each bulb in the circuit to indicate the
burnt bulb of 0 volts. Since all the bulbs are to add back up to give you a total of 480 volts. The potential hazards are electric shock. PPE such as insulated
gloves, safety glasses, coveralls and safety boots are to be inspected and worn together with tools and equipment. In the event of an incident emergency
response will be contacted.

You have been hired by a homeowner to install a ceiling fan and light kit in a living room. The living room luminaire (light fixture) being used at the present time
contains two 60-W lamps. After locating the circuit in the panel box, you find that the circuit is protected by a 15-A circuit breaker and is run with 2.5mm² copper
wire. After turning on all lights connected to this circuit, you have a current draw of 8.6 A and a voltage of 120V. The ceiling fan light kit contains four 60-W
lamps, and the fan has a maximum current draw of 1.6 A. Can this fan be connected to the existing living room circuit? Recall that a continuous-use circuit
should not be loaded to more than 80% of its rated capacity.

We were tasked to identify whether a fan light kit (4bulbs) can be installed in a living room connected to a 15amp circuit breaker, which has a present light fixture
of 8.6 amps connected to it. The fan individually has a maximum of current draw of 1.6 amps, each bulb has a maximum power of 60w. When calculated using
the power formula; P=IV which was converted to I=P/V (I=60/120), it was estimated that the four bulbs have a total current of 2 amps (each bulb having a draw
of 0.5amps). Which making the total current draw of the fan and light kit 3.6 amps, with addition of the current draw of the previous light fixture the total current
of everything being 12.2amps. After all calculations were complete, it was identified that it is not safe to install since it states that a continuous used circuit
should not be loaded to more than 80% of its rated capacity. Since 80%of 15 amp breaker being 11 amps.

Practical application case study 2

A circuit contains a 1000ohms and a 300ohms resistor connected in series with each other. The total circuit resistance must be reduced to a value of 1150
ohms. Using standard resistance values for 5% resistors, explain how to change the present resistance value to the value desired.

The task which is being presented is to change the present resistance value to a desired resistance value. The method which will be the most suitable for this
task is to add 300 ohms the resistor in parallel with the other 300 ohms resister. firstly, we need to find the total resistance by adding R1 to with both the 300
ohms resistor in parallel which will be Rt= R1 + ( 1/300 + 1/ 300 ) = 2/300 then you flip it to get a resistance sum of 150 ohms. Which when you add the 1000
ohms resistor to the 1000 ohms you should get a desired resistance total of 1150 ohms.
