DESIGN AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF TUBULAR SPACEFRAME AJAY GUPTA
CHASSIS OF FSAE RACE CAR
PROJECT GUIDE:- PROF. SUHAS JADHAV

ABSTRACT :-
DESIGN:- GRAPHICAL RESULTS:-
This design project is about to design, analyze a tubular spaceframe chassis that is used for FSAE race car
(single-seated, open cockpit, formula style race car). Chassis being backbone of automobile system it
should be strong enough to sustain the loads acting on it. Various parameters that can affect the
performance of the vehicle should be considered while during design and analysis process. The design
should be in accordance with the rules stated in the rulebook. Once the design is completed various types
of analysis are performed on chassis to check whether the design is safe.

INTRODUCTION:-
In an automobile system chassis is one of the most important component. It supports and carries other components of the
automobile. It also connects the components of automobile. Chassis is subjected to various loads hence its main function
is to sustain those loads that are acting on it without structural failure. There are different types of chassis such as ladder
frame, monocoque, spaceframe etc. However, tubular spaceframe chassis is widely used type of chassis for FSAE race
cars. Tubular spaceframe chassis is a tubular structure that is formed by joining a series of tubes together so that it can
support and accommodate other components, sub-systems of the race car. The tubular members are arranged in
triangular pattern as a result the spaceframe chassis consists of multiple trusses which help in load distribution. The CHASSIS MODEL
working principle of spaceframe is similar to working of truss. Material selection plays an important role in the overall
process of design and analysis of chassis. Various types of analysis are performed on the chassis to check whether the
design is safe.

ANALYSIS:-

OBJECTIVES:-
• The objective of this project is to expose to the student on the process of design and analysis of a product. APPLICATIONS AND FUNCTIONS:-
• Research of effective spaceframe chassis characteristics and also to Design and develop an effective chassis.
• Design Chassis with the constraints of maximum shear stress, equivalent stress and deflection of the chassis under
maximum load condition.
• Analyzing the design of Chassis using simulation softwares. APPLICATIONS OF TUBULAR SPACEFRAME STRUCTURE FUNCTIONS OF CHASSIS ARE AS FOLLOWS:-
• Analyzing and comparison of results for different materials. IN DIFFERENT FIELDS:- • To support and carry the components of the vehicle and sustain the loads acting
• AUTOMOBILE (ATV’S) on it without structural failure.
• AEROSPACE • To provide mounting points for various assemblies and sub-assemblies of the
• MACHINERY BASE vehicle.
• To prevent distortion/deflection in shape.
METHODOLOGY:-
FRONT IMPACT ANALYSIS ACCELERATION TEST
CONCLUSION:-

ANALYSIS RESULTS:- Thus, we have successfully performed the analysis of the Tubular Space frame chassis. It is observed that the selection of material plays
important role in the analysis as well as for design safety and various factors such as strength, cost, availability etc. should be considered while
selecting the material. Following a systematic approach for design and analysis helps to create a better design. Also, while designing we have to
consider some parameters/attributes which directly or indirectly affect the performance of the chassis. From the different loading conditions,
analysis cases and their results, we can conclude that the Chassis model is safe for the materials AISI 1020, AISI 4130 and AISI 4340. Also, we
noted that FOS for both materials ranges between 3.325 to 1.034, and for the optimum design model it should between 1 – 3.5. However, from
Result comparison table it can be seen that the deformation for AISI 4340 material was low compared to AISI 1020 and AISI 4130. Also, from
FOS Graph the FOS values obtained for AISI 4340 are high as compared to AISI 1020 and AISI 4130. Thus, by considering FOS, strength, cost
and availability as the parameters for material selection we can conclude that AISI 4340 will be more suitable material for the chassis as
compared to AISI 4130 and AISI 1020.
