Capstone Update #2

What I have accomplished so far

I have written the character I am to design and have also thought of a backstory and basic world
building. Defined the environment around the character and first thought of an archetype of the
character. Then, I filled in basic information such as sex, age, height, physique (making sure the physique
reflects the daily life of the character). I then wrote out a few key elements of the character’s
disposition, allegiance, and personality. During this process, I envisioned and referenced from other
character from other fictional works and stories. I then wrote the character’s backstory while cross
referencing with the rough world building. I then made a visual mood board of both environments and
design elements that I would like to incorporate into the character.

What I plan to accomplish by the end of the week

Begin to sketch multiple variations of designs for the character while keeping the backstory and
personality in mind. I would do this in a loose fashion, following the flow which the process guides me
and my intuition chooses. I would also review character design notes while watching videos that cover
the visual aspect of storytelling. At the end of the week, I would have a collage of generated ideas that I
can mull over and pick and choose.

My needs (materials, time, space, mentor etc.)

Nothing new. Just time and my sketchbook and iPad to gather reference and sketch. I could also
consult with an online art community I am a part of for some advice/critique.

Challenges I encountered and how I have overcome them

The starting point of designing a character seemed overwhelming at first, so I reviewed past
notes and decided to begin my envisioning the environment first. By understanding the environment,
the visualization of the character becomes clearer, allowing me to find a clear structure of the
design/writing process. Drawing from other works of fiction also assisted in the overall vision of the
project. Whenever I got stuck, I would gather ideas or visual cues online and begin to craft and idea
around it.
