ASSIGNMENT 1

PRODUCTION OF FLEX FUEL ENGINES IN FUTURE

INTRODUCTION:
Flex-fuel vehicles are capable of running on a combination of either 100%
petrol or bio-ethanol and their blends, along with strong hybrid electric
technology in case of flex-fuel strong hybrid electric vehicles. Union Minister
Nitin Gadkari said that these engines are mandatory for the automobile industry
while asserting that the move will help farmers and boost the Indian economy.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the target date for achieving 20
percent ethanol-blending with petrol has been advanced by five years to 2025 to
cut pollution and reduce import dependence. Ethanol is a better fuel than petrol,
and it is import substitute, cost effective, pollution-free and indigenous. Petrol
price in the national capital crossed Rs 97 a litre and diesel neared Rs 88 after
fuel prices were raised yet again. So, there are a lot of reasons for why bringing
in the flex fuel engines are necessary.

METHODOLOGY:
i) TRIZ flow process:
The methodology chosen to solve this issue is known as TRIZ.
This methodology was chosen because it is an efficient problem-solving
method that increases the ability to solve creative problems. The outline of the
TRIZ flow process is shown below. The initial step is to identify the original
problem to resolve, and then followed by defining the related engineering
system, function analysis, cause and effect chain analysis (CECA) and
engineering contradiction. Lastly, contradiction matrix is used to locate the
specific inventive principles, which will lead to finding of specific solutions.
ii) Engineering System Definition:
An engineering system consists of several components that
are interacted among each other.

iii) Function Analysis:

Function Analysis helps us understand our choices and constraints
in solving problems. It is a process of understanding our system by focusing on
its functions.

iv) Cause and Effect Chain Analysis:

CECA is a useful tool in solving inventive problem using TRIZ
methodology. The CECA aimed at identifying underlying key disadvantages and
the key problems that are aimed at eliminating the key disadvantages.

v) Engineering Contradiction/ Contradiction Matrix:
An Engineering Contradiction is a situation in which an attempt to
improve one characteristics of the engineering system results in the worsening
of another characteristic. This worsening of another characteristic can take on
many forms. In order to resolve an engineering contradiction, we need to identify
the system parameters which improve and worsen; and use the contradiction
matrix (or Altshuller’s Matrix) to identify potential Inventive Principles to help
solve the problem.
Altshuller’s Matrix
Improving parameter:
Engine

Worsening parameter:
More emission so issues in combustion chamber increases

To overcome the problem, main single injection can be split into two or
three injection pulses of approximately equal size for every engine cycle with
definite delay dwell between the injections. The benefits of split injections is
that it’s lower the flame temperature and allow sufficient air and fuel mixing to
increase homogeneity of charge.

RESULTS OBTAINED:
There is lowest emission obtained from the three injection pulse split
engine than the two injection pulse split engine and the one injection pulse
engine.
Here, the emissions are split up into three different injections in the
triple split injection pulse engine and seems to be the best approach of among
the rest two to overcome the problem discussed.

INFERENCE:
In conclusion, with the use of TRIZ, solution to improve the engine
performance is proposed, particularly by using the inventive principle such as
periodic action. The outcome of the proposed methodology of TRIZ is
considered along with the customers opinions. Consequently, a split injection of
triple injection strategy indicated lowest emission which in turn reduces the
combustion chamber issues leading to better engine performance.
