that a reasonable adult considers explicit and
pornographic is prohibited.
“This means that any action linked to
pornography is unethical, immoral and even
criminal. But teenagers continue to watch
pornography despite this.”
She said among the reasons for their
addiction to it are loneliness, curiosity and
even stress relief.

Govt keen to

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will
negotiate with Singapore to maintain
the Tebrau Shuttle Train service between
Johor Bahru Sentral and Woodlands,
after the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid
Transit System (RTS) Link begins
operations, said Transport Minister
Anthony Loke.
He said the termination of the shuttle
service was one of the conditions agreed
by Malaysia and Singapore in
implementing the RTS project.

we have more connectivity between

will try to negotiate this matter with
Singapore, so that this service is

PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry is
revising the primary school curriculum for
Bahasa Malaysia, English, Science and
Mathematics subjects.
Its head of corporate affairs Anis Diyana
Azizi said the review was initiated after
considering input from various
stakeholders.
The move comes after teachers and
parents complained on social media that
some of the content in primary school
textbooks was irrelevant to the curriculum.
In one incident, a school teacher took to
Facebook to highlight a Standard Three
textbook lesson about money and the
currency rates of different countries.
The teacher questioned how currency
rates could be relevant to primary
schoolchildren.
“The ministry has conducted various
activities such as organising conferences
and engagement sessions to gather feedback
and views from different stakeholders.
“We have also developed a guidance
module for these four subjects using a
simple yet suitable approach that matches
the capabilities of students.”

platform as a comprehensive one-stop
resource centre for educational materials,

Committee panels to review and verify the
suitability of materials for Malaysian
students and ensure factual accuracy.”

distorting one’s grasp of intimacy, consent and
sexual conduct.
She said it may also lead to dependence on
explicit material for sexual satisfaction,
affecting long-term sexual health and overall
well-being.
“Pornography can significantly influence a
teenager’s perception of gender roles and
stereotypes. It often portrays men as dominant
and women as submissive. This reinforces
traditional and often harmful gender roles.
“It can also depict women as objects of
desire rather than as equals, which can skew a
teenager’s understanding of consent, respect
and equality in relationships.”
Lavanya stressed that it is crucial to counter
these messages with open conversations
about gender equality and respect in
relationships.
“Teenagers need comprehensive sex
education and open discussions about these
effects to develop a healthier, more realistic
view of sex and relationships,” she said.

PETALING JAYA: Artificial sweeteners offer
potential health benefits such as aiding in
weight management and blood sugar control
for diabetics. Yet concerns have been raised
about their long-term health effects, such as
metabolic disorders and changes in taste
preferences.
Health Ministry Food Safety and Quality
Division senior director Norrani Eksan said
aspartame is a food additive that has been
approved for use in Malaysia as a sweetener
or flavour enhancer since the Food
Regulations (FR) 1985 came into force.
She said other than aspartame, there are
artificial sweeteners that are used in the
food industry.
Currently, more than 1,000 food and
beverage products contain artificial
sweeteners.
Dietitian Nurul Fathiyah Saad said some
variants, such as sucralose and saccharin,
are 100 times sweeter than refined sugar.
“While sweeteners are used in smaller
amounts in processed foods like energy
drinks and crackers to reduce calories and
sugar content, their increased level of
sweetness causes consumers to have a
higher tolerance for sweet foods.”
While this can be dangerous, Nurul
Fathiyah said many artificial sweeteners are
also suitable for diabetics as the impact on
their blood sugar level is insignificant.
“It is essential to consult healthcare
professionals to determine the best options
based on individual needs.”
She said the Health Ministry has set the
Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for consumers
to estimate the amount of artificial
sweeteners they can safely consume daily in
their lifetime without increasing health risks.
Some of the ADI values for common
artificial sweeteners are 40mg/kg of body
weight for aspartame and 15mg/kg of body
weight for saccharin.

sweeteners are labelled with their E-number,
and specific names are E951(aspartame) and
E954 (saccharin).
To balance the benefits of artificial
sweeteners and maintain a well-rounded
diet, Nurul Fathiyah said Malaysians should
consume natural and artificial sweeteners
in moderation.
“Instead of relying solely on artificial
sweeteners, one’s diet should consist of
whole fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and
whole grains for overall health.”
However, artificial sweeteners are not
commonly consumed by Malaysians, as
found by the Malaysian Adult Nutrition
Survey (MANS) conducted in 2003 and 2014
by the Health Ministry.
“Instead, Malaysians have a higher intake
of added sugar and condensed milk or
creamer in their daily diet.
“Sugar and condensed milk or creamer
consistently ranked among the top 10 food
items consumed daily by adults in the 2003
and 2014 MANS studies.
“Sugar consumption has increased from
21g to 25.5gm per day, and condensed milk
or creamer consumption has increased from

According to the Health Ministry, the
safety of any permitted artificial sweetener
under FR 1985 has been evaluated by the US
Food and Agriculture Organisation and the
World Health Organisation Expert
Committee on Food Additives.
“Due to their calorie-free sweet taste,
foods and beverages containing artificial
sweeteners gained popularity in response
to the growing need to reduce sugar
consumption.
“This is a strategy to combat weight gain
and other health issues, but it is important to
note that the intake of artificial sweeteners
should not be the only or primary approach
to managing obesity and diabetes,” said
Nurul Fathiyah.
According to the Health Ministry, some
artificial sweeteners, such as glycerol and
isomalt, needed to be labeled with warnings
that excessive use can have a laxative effect.
“Enforcement and monitoring activities
are carried out on all food products,
including those at entry points in schools,
restaurants and other public settings to
ensure compliance of the standards
prescribed under FR 1985.”

or Bahasa Melayu (BM), for correspondence in
government departments is crucial to ensure
clarity and integrity of government
communication, and to promote the importance
of the national language among Malaysians.

Ibrahim’s statement regarding the matter, the
Federation of Peninsular Malay Students president
Muhd Fazreen Ismadi said the move was also
important to preserve the sovereignty and position
of the national language.
“This will also help create positive effects in the
education, employment and social fields, as well as
to ensure fairness in access to government
services,” he said in a statement yesterday.
On Tuesday, in his speech at the opening of the
National Language Decade Carnival and National
Reading Decade, Anwar reminded government
departments not to entertain any letters written
in a language other than the national language,
after noticing that there was a tendency by
some parties to defy the fundamentals of the
Federal Constitution.
Muhd Fazreen expressed hope that the efforts
will continue to be strengthened and continued.
“Although Malaysia has been independent for
almost seven decades, the people are still
bewildered by the adherence to the Malay
language in daily affairs, up to official government

in Sarawak
JOHOR BAHRU: The Health Ministry is urging
owners of pets in Sarawak to vaccinate their dogs
or cats to curb the spread of rabies in the state.
Deputy Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang
Sauni said the rabies situation in Sarawak was
quite worrying, adding that preventive measures
are being carried out by the Sarawak government,
including the Veterinary Services Department.
“It is understood that the Veterinary Services
Department is organising a vaccination
programme for pets and has opened a counter
where owners can register their pets.
“As for stray (or wild) animals, vaccinations will
be done when authorities act on a complaint. This
is important because dogs move in groups, and
often enter residential areas,” he said at the
ministry’s National Sports Carnival at Mount
Austin Stadium yesterday.
“The rabies situation in Peninsular Malaysia is
under control. From 2020 to 2023, there were only
three cases recorded in Selangor, compared with
75 in Sarawak during the same period.”
Sarawak Health Director Dr Ooi Choo Huck
earlier said 17 cases were recorded in the state from
January to Sept 17, involving five cases in Sibu
Division, four in Serian, three in Kuching and

The prosecution also sought to amend
the 21st charge involving the transfer of funds,
by reducing the amount of RM12.4 million

his position to obtain bribes totalling
RM2.3 billion belonging to 1MDB and 21
charges of money laundering involving the

for bribing
TNB engineer
SHAH ALAM: A businessman broke down in
tears after being fined RM20,000, in default 20
months’ jail, by the High Court yesterday on five
counts of bribing a Tenaga Nasional Berhad
(TNB) engineer to refrain from disconnecting
the electricity supply at his business premises
between 2019 and 2021.
Judge Datuk Anita Harun fined Ng Yin Wui
RM4,000, in default four months’ jail, for each
count after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
The 41-year-old, who was unrepresented,
pleaded for a lower fine on the basis that he was
the sole breadwinner of his family and that it
was his first offence.
Ng was accused of offering RM8,000 in
bribes to the engineer, 31, at two restaurants in
Sunway Mentari, Selangor between Nov 1, 2019
and Nov 15, 2021.
The bribes were inducement for the
engineer not to disconnect power supply at his
business premises over the theft of electricity
and tampering with the meter, which are
offences under Section 37(14) of the Electricity
Supply Act 1990.
Ng, the owner of a plastic recycling centre,
was charged under Section 214 of the Penal
Code, which provides imprisonment of up to six
months, a fine, or both.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission
(MACC) prosecuting officer V. Yunaisvari
requested the court to mete out a deterrent
sentence, taking into account public interest
and amount involved, to send a clear
message that the law will not compromise on
such offences.
Meanwhile in the same court, S. Amutha, 29,
was charged under Section 18 of the MACC Act
2009 for submitting a false list of names of 14
individuals who were not her company
employees to the Social Security Organisation
in Petaling Jaya.
The judge allowed bail of RM25,000 in one
surety and ordered the accused to report once a
month to the Negeri Sembilan MACC office and
surrender her passport to the court.
The next case mention was set for Nov 29.

Three killed, one
injured in collision
KUALA LUMPUR: Three individuals died while
one was injured in a car crash yesterday in Jalan
Kuala Kubu Bharu, Rawang.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department
operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis
Mokhtar said the deceased were identified as
Rosihat Lemon 68, Chan Kwai Hoong, 62 and
Soo Yoke Siew 53.
He added that initial investigations revealed
the collision involved two cars – one driven by
Chan, with Soo as a passenger, and another
carrying Rosihat and an unidentified woman.
“The bodies of the victims were sent to the
Kuala Kubu Bharu Hospital for post-mortem,
while the injured passenger was sent to the
Selayang Hospital for treatment.”
Ahmad Mukhlis said in a statement police
received an emergency call at about 11am
before 13 personnel and two fire engines from
the Kuala Kubu Bharu and Rawang stations
rushed to the scene.
The cause of the collision and relations
between the victims are still being investigated.

warning to all immigrants in the country

news conference in Islamabad that Pakistan was
determined to go ahead with a plan to remove
all undocumented immigrants after Nov 1.

COLOMBO: Shamans at a Sri Lankan temple
known for helping pilgrims place curses on
their enemies went on strike yesterday after
appeals to the lord of destruction failed to
resolve a pay dispute.
Seenigama Devale, a shrine on a small
islet off Sri Lanka’s southern coast, hosts daily
ceremonies in which celebrants guide the
grinding of fiery peppers over a millstone.
The ritual offering is made to Devol, a
deity whose duties involve comforting the
faithful and unleashing great suffering on
their enemies.
But D.M. Kumara, the temple’s chief
shaman, said he and his nine colleagues had
halted the ceremonies to protest new rules
that sharply cut their earnings.
Administrators decreed that Kumara and
his colleagues could now only take 30% of
the cash, gems and jewellery offerings made
to Devol, down from the complete share they
took earlier.
All 10 shamans had appealed to the deity
to intervene on their behalf, he said, adding
that the strike was necessary in the interim.
“We have taken our grievance to god
Devol, but we are taking direct action
because we have not seen immediate results.
“Divine influence will take a little time
to work.”
The temple’s interim administrator,
Sarath Disenthuwa Handi, said the strike
was unnecessary because celebrants would
still be earning around US$1,500 (RM7,200)
per month, 10 times the average salary of a

SEOUL: South Korea’s constitutional court
yesterday narrowly upheld a law banning
same-sex relations within the armed
forces, citing a possible risk to the
military’s combat readiness. Under the
country’s military criminal act, members
of the armed forces face up to two years in
prison for same-sex relationships. The law
has been referred to the court and upheld
by it four times since 2002. In yesterday’s
five-to-four ruling, the court said allowing
same-sex relations could undermine
discipline within the military and harm its
combat capabilities. South Korea has one
of the world’s largest active armies, with
all able-bodied men between the ages of
18 and 28 required to serve between 18

TAIPEI: Taiwan’s military sent forces to
keep watch yesterday after a Chinese
naval formation led by the aircraft carrier
Shandong passed the island’s south and
entered the western Pacific, Taiwan’s
Defence Ministry said. The Shandong
participated in Chinese military drills
around Taiwan in April, operating in the
western Pacific. It also sailed through the
Taiwan Strait in June and last month also
carried out drills in the western Pacific. In
a statement, the ministry said the

Probe initiated after beer worker shown urinating into vat
BEIJING: A Chinese brewery has launched an
investigation after a man was seen urinating
into a vat at a one of its factories.
A shocking video which has been viewed
tens of millions of times on social media shows
a man dressed in blue overalls and a helmet
climbing into a malt container at the beer
factory in Pingdu, China on Oct 19.
He then proceeded to urinate into the vat.
The company said it has “completely

Israeli tanks raid Gaza ahead of ‘next stage’
GAZA CITY: Israel said yesterday a column
of tanks and infantry had launched an
overnight raid into Hamas-controlled Gaza,
striking “numerous” targets before retreating
to home soil.
The military announced the incursion
into the north of the Palestinian territory
hours after Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu declared preparations for a
ground war were under way.
The Israel Defence Forces described the
operation as a “targeted raid” that hit

battered Acapulco
MEXICO CITY: Mexican authorities rushed to send
emergency aid, restore communications and assess
damage in the Pacific coast resort town of Acapulco
on Wednesday after a powerful hurricane left what
residents described as a “total disaster”.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador
arrived in the seaside city on Wednesday, after his
convoy found roads blocked by landslides and
other debris, forcing the president and others to
abandon their vehicles and walk the final miles.
“The army is bringing machinery and we’re
going to try to reopen (the highway) as soon as
possible,” he told journalists.
He said there were no initial reports of deaths
but “there’s material damage and blocked roads”.
The closures forced some to slog for hours
through mud and debris in an attempt to find food
and shelter.
“Acapulco is a total disaster. It is not what it was
before. The park was totally destroyed, the
buildings, all the streets,” said resident Eric
Hernandez, who made the decision to leave on foot.
“The shops had all been looted, people were
fighting for things. So we decided to walk as there
wasn’t anything left there.”
Others said an overflowing river and collapsed
bridges had cut off communities near Acapulco.
“A lot of people got stuck on the other side of the
river in our village, which was overflowing a lot.
People were left homeless, there’s no electricity,”

WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives
finally elected a new speaker on Wednesday,
ending weeks of bitter Republican infighting that
paralysed Congress at a time of multiple crises.
Mike Johnson, a little-known ally of Donald
Trump who spearheaded legal efforts to overturn
the 2020 election, won the unanimous support of
his party to lead the lower chamber of Congress,
which has been at a standstill since Kevin McCarthy
was ousted in a right-wing coup on Oct 3.

ALLEGED RUSSIAN ‘AGENT’

a Russian-Swede accused of passing Western
technology to Russia’s military, ruling that while
he did export the material his actions did not

five-year sentence against Sergei Skvortsov, a
60-year-old dual national who has lived in

HE Boxster is widely known as the car
that saved Porsche. Back in the early-
90s, things were not looking up for
Porsche thanks to a faltering economy
and expensive production costs.
The company went from selling 50,000 cars
annually in the mid-80s to just 14,000 in 1993.
Porsche needed a savior and fast.
So, the company looked around and
noticed that Mazda was having great success
with the Miata roadster, known as the MX-5 on
this side of the world.
And having produced roadsters before with
the 550 Spyder in the 1950s, Porsche decided
to revive its own rendition.
In a 2016 interview with American
publication Road & Track, Hans-Juergen
Woehler, the lead development engineer for
the original Boxster was quoted as saying, “The

buttons and dials, which is not necessarily a
bad thing if you are so inclined.
Porsche knows the 718 Boxster needs an
update and the rumour mill is already at work
of the successor to the 718 and even a pure
electric Boxster.
But the end is still a ways away, and for
those who still love the style and design of the
718 Boxster, Porsche now has the Style Edition,
which is the model shown here.
The Style Edition features unique and
contrasting colour combinations and is
basically customisable to your heart’s desire.
Take the model in these photos for example,
it comes with a stylish colour called Ruby Star
Neo which is an option at RM10,904 and would
look right at home on the streets of Miami.
The electric sports seats, which are
adjustable in 14-ways and include memory
function, cost RM9,632 and the black leather
package will set you back a further RM6,917.
The blacked out tailpipes cost RM2,489
while the 20-inch Carrera S wheels are a
whopping RM11,399.
And if you would like to have the wheels
painted in the same Satin Platinum colour as
you see here, that would be a further RM5,535.
The options list is impressive by itself, and
while the base price of the 718 Boxster is
RM530,000, the Style Edition model we drove
costs RM634,979.
That is nearly RM120,000 worth of options,
many of those are related to style but there are
functional options such as the bigger fuel tank
that measures in at 64L while the standard tank
is just 54L.
Porsche has had a storied chapter with the
Boxster and its finest iteration of the roadster is
undoubtedly the 718 model. Now with the
Style Edition, that fast and fun Boxster also
boasts stylish good looks for added measure.

bunkering operation
JOHOR BARU: Johor Port Bhd, a member
of MMC Group, has completed its 100th
LNG bunkering operation in collaboration
with Petco Trading Labuan Company Ltd
(PTLCL), a Petronas trading arm.
This is a significant journey, which started
with the very first LNG bunker spot supply to
vessel MV Siem Aristotle back in November
2020; representing a first for Malaysia.
Since then, the collaboration with
PTLCL via Petronas Marine has reached
its 100th LNG bunkering operation
milestone on the July 28 for the Newcastle
Max size bulk carrier Mount Norafjell;
effectively overtaking Singapore in terms
of the number of LNG bunkering
operations and total bunkered tonnage
and further solidified Malaysia’s position
as the LNG bunkering hub pioneer in Asia.
“The Pasir Gudang Port Limit, under
the management of Johor Port, is
pivotally positioned to cater for both east
and west bound vessels hence making it
a preferred location for all LNG vessels
as it only requires minimal deviation
from the vessel common route for LNG
bunkering operation, said Johor Port

third quarter ended Sept 30,
2023, recording solid top and
bottom-line results.
For its third quarter of 2023,
the group recorded a turnover of
RM1.77 billion, marking a 5.3%
increase from the same quarter
last year. Domestic sales
remained a key contributor with
double-digit growth of 11.7%.
This was partially offset by export
sales, which were lower in
comparison to a very high
baseline in the previous year’s
corresponding quarter.

Malaysia’s PPI turns
positive in September
oProducer Price Index up 0.2% from August, first increase after seven months of decline
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Producer Price
Index (PPI) , which measures the prices of
goods at the factory gate, increased by 0.2%
in September 2023 compared with negative
2.2% in August 2023, the Department of
Statistics Malaysia reported yesterday.
This is the first increase after seven
consecutive months of decline since
February 2023, due to the base effect and
higher prices of primary commodities.
Chief Statistician Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr
Mohd Uzir Mahidin said, ”The marginal
increase was contributed by all sectors
except the manufacturing sector. The
agriculture, forestry & fishing sector
increased by 3.2% (August 2023: -1.0%) due
to the increase in animal production (5.7%)
and growing of perennial crops (3.3%).
“At the same time, the mining sector
increased by 6.9% after recording a negative
3.8% in the previous month supported by
extraction of crude petroleum (8.1%) and
extraction of natural gas (2.7%). Both utility
sectors recorded incline, with the electricity
& gas supply sector increased 0.5% and the
water supply increased by 0.9%.”
He added that the manufacturing sector
remained negative for five consecutive
months recording a negative 0.8% (August
2023: -2.3%), affected by manufacture of coke
& refined petroleum products (-7.1%) and
manufacture of food products (-5.3%).
On a monthly basis, PPI local production
went up by 0.9% in September 2023 after no
changes recorded in August 2023. The
mining sector increased by 5.6% owing to
extraction of crude petroleum (6.6%) and
extraction of natural gas (1.9%) indices. The
manufacturing sector increased slightly by
0.8% after recording negative changes since
May 2023, attributed to manufacture of
refined petroleum products (6.1%) and
manufacture of computers & peripheral
equipment (2.8%).
Similarly, the electricity & gas supply
sector also inched up 0.4%. However, the
agriculture, forestry & fishing sector declined
by negative 1.4% with the index of growing of
perennial crops posting a decrease of
negative 2.3%. The water supply sector also
recorded a decrease of negative 0.4% in this
month.
Mohd Uzir said, “The crude materials for
further processing index increased by 5.4%
in September 2023 (August 2023: -4.0%),
with non-food materials and foodstuffs &
feedstuffs indices posting an increase of 5.9%
and 3.0%, respectively. The finished goods
index remained positive to post 3.1%, due to
the increase in capital equipment (4.4%) and

Unlike AI offerings that solely focus on text

South Korea’s
economic growth
beats estimates,
backing rate pause
SEOUL: South Korea’s economy
fared better than expected in the
third quarter with the expansion
underpinned by exports, backing
the case for the central bank to keep
rates on hold for the months ahead.
Gross domestic product (GDP)
grew 0.6% in the July-September
quarter from three months earlier,
data from the Bank of Korea (BoK)
showed yesterday, the same pace as
the prior quarter and beating a
median 0.5% increase forecast in a
Reuters survey.
The results likely bolster the
BoK’s view that it needs to maintain
restrictive monetary policy for now
to bring the economy in for a soft
landing after a cumulative 300 basis
points of interest rate hikes since
August 2021.
“It’s still uncertain whether the
economy will achieve 1.4% annual
expansion as forecast (by the BoK),”
said Park Sang-hyun, chief economist
at HI Investment & Securities. “The
business sentiment data out today
isn’t so great and the strength of
exports recovery may not be that
solid.”
In the third quarter, exports
expanded 3.5% after declining 0.9%
in the preceding three months,
while private consumption grew
0.3% after contracting 0.1% in the
second quarter.
A breakdown of GDP contribution
showed net exports by volume
boosted growth by 0.4 percentage
points in the third quarter.
Government spending grew
0.1%, and construction investment
expanded 2.2% after contracting
0.8% in the second quarter.
Facility investment has been a
drag, contracting 2.7% on-quarter.
On an annual basis, Asia’s fourth-
largest economy grew 1.4% in the

Overseas Bank (UOB) expected a
stronger outlook for next year
including improved loan and fees
growth, as it reported yesterday a
weaker-than-expected 1% drop in
third-quarter net profit from a year
earlier.
UOB, Singapore’s third-largest
bank by assets, projected mid single-
digit loan growth and double-digit
fee growth for its 2024 outlook,
versus low-to-mid single-digit loan
year, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
The UK-headquartered bank,
which earns most of its revenue in
Asia, booked July-September statutory
pre-tax profit of US$633 million.
That compared with US$996 million
a year earlier and the US$1.41 billion
average of analyst estimates.
The hefty loss in China, where
StanChart has based much of its
expansion effort, underlines the
challenge it faces to improve returns
via exposure to the world’s second-
largest economy at a time of slowing
growth and widening losses on loans.
StanChart said the hit on its 16%
stake in China Bohai, a lender in the
eastern coastal city of Tianjin in
which it invested more than a
decade ago, was due to lower

“We took a couple of impairment
charges a year and a bit ago, and we
have taken the extra impairment
charge as you can see today,” chief
financial officer Andy Halford told
reporters.
“That is reflective of the fact that
particularly its own net interest
margin has been weaker,” he said.
StanChart’s Chinese real estate
exposure totalled US$2.7 billion as of
the end of September, down US$200
million from the previous quarter.
Shares in rival HSBC, which
similarly has exposure to Chinese
real estate and to the bank sector via
its stake in Bank of Communications,
were down only 2% yesterday as
investors saw limited read-across
between the two.

charges – remained solid, Dickerson
said in a note to clients.
Net interest margin, a measure of
return on lending, will now
“approach” 1.7 percentage points
rather than be “around” that level,

West Ham vs Everton (9pm) – Home win
West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen has been in fine form,
scoring six goals this season and is the third
player in the League’s history to score in each of
their side’s first five away matches in a campaign,
only after Arsenal great Thierry Henry and Salah.
Everton defender Ashley Young was sent off
against Liverpool in last week’s Merseyside derby
and faces a spell on the sidelines. Everton suf-
fered a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. David Moyes’
Hammers, who sit fifth in the standings, will look
to bounce back from their 4-1 defeat by Aston
Villa.
Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest – Home win
Liverpool are undefeated in 19 of their last 20
League matches. Young is the first player to be
sent off for two yellow cards in a League match
against Liverpool since Sadio Mane in October
2015 while playing for Southampton. Jurgen
Klopp’s Liverpool have racked up four red cards
this season. Forest have drawn their last three
League matches.
Brighton vs Fulham – Home win
Brighton have conceded at least two goals in
their last three League matches. Roberto De
Zerbi’s side dropped down to seventh in the
standings following a 2-1 loss at Manchester City
last week, with winger Solly March, one of
Brighton’s key players, potentially facing a long
spell on the sidelines due to injury. Fulham man-
ager Marco Silva signed a new three-year con-
tract and will remain at Craven Cottage until the
end of the 2025-26 season.
Aston Villa vs Luton Town (11pm) – Home win
Unai Emery’s Villa have won 11 consecutive
League home matches. Brazilian midfielder
Douglas Luiz is the first player to score in six con-
secutive matches for Villa at Villa Park in the
League, surpassing the record previously held by
Dwight Yorke. Promoted Luton sit 17th in the
table with just one win, which came against
Everton.
Man United vs Man City (11.30pm) – Draw
Pep Guardiola’s City have broken United’s record
for most consecutive wins on home soil after they
beat Brighton 2-1 last week at the Etihad
Stadium. Treble winners City are the only team
alongside La Liga giants Barcelona to have won
the most points across Europe’s top-five leagues
this year. Defender Harry Maguire has picked up
form in recent matches, having scored United’s
winner against FC Copenhagen in the group
stage of the Champions League.

goals after the Norwegian’s double sank
Young Boys yesterday.
Haaland struck twice in the second half
as the holders claimed a hard-fought 3-1
win over the Swiss side in their
Champions League Group G encounter on
the artificial surface at Bern’s Wankdorf
Stadium.
The game had been in the balance
after Meschack Elia had cancelled out
Switzerland international Manuel Akanji’s
opener with a superb strike.
Haaland’s goals were his first in six
Champions League games while his effort
against Brighton on Saturday ended a
three-game scoreless run – relative barren
spells for a player who plundered 52 in
total last season.
“There is the impression after last
season that he has to score seven goals
every single game. That is impossible,”
Guardiola said.
“But he is scoring a lot of goals and if
people want him to fail because he
doesn’t score 50 goals it doesn’t matter.
He is always there.
“The second goal was really good and
he had other chances. The important
thing is to create them.
“Maybe in the right moment of the
season he will be there, better than now,
but he has already scored a lot of goals
and we are really pleased.
“I’ve told him many times I don’t judge
him for scoring goals, although I know he
wants to score goals. He has the desire to
improve and I don’t have doubts about
that.”
City’s victory, sealed with a Haaland
penalty and a clever late finish, was their
third in succession and took them a step
closer to the knockout stages.
They could reach the last-16 for an
11th consecutive season with a follow-up
win over the same opposition at the
Etihad Stadium in a fortnight.
Haaland had played the full 90
minutes in both of Man City’s previous
Champions League matches this season,
against Red Star Belgrade and RB Leipzig,
but failed to score in both matches.
With Haaland back scoring and Man
City claiming victory, TNT football pundit
Joe Cole claimed that it was “business as
usual” for City against Young Boys.
“Order restored,” the former Chelsea
midfielder said. “All is well. Man City are a
well drilled top draw team. I cant see no
faults in them.
“They’re used to winning and they
know what winning means and this was
business as usual.”
Speaking about the match, Guardiola
told TNT Sports: “It was an exceptional
game. Our positional game was really,
really, good.”
“In the first half, we lacked, due to the
physicality of them, being aggressive in
the one-vs-ones and Mateo (Kovacic) was
a bit away from the position where he
should be. In the second half, Mateo
helped us to win the game.
“But in general, all of them were
exceptional so I’m really really pleased for
the way we played. We have one more
game to qualify automatically and two
more to finish first.
“In this pitch, it’s more difficult to sense
the ball coming. It came in a different
shape so it’s more difficult. But the way we
played in our positional game was really
good.”
“We could have scored more goals but
is the important thing is to create the
chances.”
Guardiola added that Phil Foden did
not play because of a “small problem”
while Julian Alvarez, who had a goal
disallowed after coming off the bench,
was not able to play the full game.
Young Boys coach Raphael Wicky felt
his side gave a good account of
themselves.
He said: “That courage and passion, we
can be proud of what the team delivered,
but you need a perfect game against a
team like this. We couldn’t do it.
“Perfect means taking your chances
and not conceding from set-pieces. We’re
disappointed with the result, but we can
be proud of the team’s performance.” –

Howe bemoans fine margins as Newcastle given Champions League reality check

DDIE HOWE felt Newcastle were dealt a
“lesson” on the fine margins of the
Champions League as Borussia Dortmund
handed the Magpies a first defeat of their
campaign.
After a goalless draw at AC Milan and a 4-1 win
over Paris St Germain last time out, Newcastle
were brought back down to earth as Felix
Nmecha’s controlled finish gave Dortmund a 1-0
victory.
On a rain-sodden night at St James’ Park,
Callum Wilson was denied by a superb save from
Gregor Kobel then the crossbar while Anthony
Gordon’s deflected strike also came off the goal
frame late on.
Newcastle, though, lacked some impetus as a
nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions came
to an end, leaving them third in Group F, level on
four points with Dortmund and two behind table-
topping PSG.

boss said. “There are top-quality teams in the
group.
“Tonight is a blow, especially (losing) at home.
A lesson in how fine the margins are going to be.
“The ball just wouldn’t go in for us. It was one of
those nights. Callum had the first chance of the
second half, that was a good one and then we hit
the bar twice but just couldn’t force it in.
“Credit to the players, we never gave up, we
kept doing the right things. We looked like a goal
threat. But we have to be at our best to win and if
you dip below that, it is tough to get results at this
level.
“Any mistake you make is liable to get
punished. We made one and seconds later we
conceded so there is stuff we could have done
better and when we analyse in the cold light of day,
we will take a lot.”
A return trip to Dortmund in a fortnight’s time
could prove instructive as to whether Newcastle
will progress to the last 16 on their first appearance
in Europe’s elite club competition in 20 years.
Their loss yesterday was compounded by
Alexander Isak limping off a quarter of an hour in
with what appears to be a recurrence of a groin
strain while second-half substitute Jacob Murphy
was withdrawn five minutes after his introduction
with a suspected dislocated shoulder.
“You look at some of the injuries, they are quite
difficult to get your head around but we have to
adjust,” Howe said.
“We can’t analyse too much, we have to regroup
the players. We’re still in a very good position in the
Premier League and Champions League.
“(The return game against Dortmund) is going
to be hugely important. The next two away games,
the League table looks very, very tight so they are
great games for us, we have to approach them like
that.
“Our lads are very honest and very focused on
trying to win and achieve, there are some tired
bodies and we have to recover for (the Premier
League game at) Wolves (on Sunday 12.30am
Malaysian time).”
Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic hailed the
display of Nmecha, who settled the contest after
exploiting some space on the edge of the area and
coolly slotting Nico Schlotterbeck’s cross beyond
Nick Pope.
“Felix is a brilliant player and we know about
his potential and his talent and we knew he could
improve our game – he had a fantastic game,”
Terzic said.
“He finally managed to score, he had many
opportunities in the first games of the season. This
was a different role, he played more attacking. He
had a rocky start in Dortmund and now he is in
good form.”
As for Howe’s comments about Newcastle
being given a lesson by Dortmund, Terzic
responded: “That is nice to hear but it is just half-
time, we face each other in a couple of weeks.” –
