1.0 Installing the Monitor

1.1 Introduction
This procedure describes the installation of Barco MCD 115 Color Video Monitor and the

CRT Arm Mounting on the SONOLINE Elegra ultrasound imaging system.

NOTICE Barco has provided a modified monitor that has a different power plug location. This monitor
requires an additional four to six inches of length in the power cable inside the monitor housing. If a
power cord extension is not provided cut the ties that secure the power cord, and then can relocate
the cord to provide the extra length needed to connect it to the monitor.

Older SONOLINE Elegra systems (standard configuration with a PSN of 00 and

Advanced configuration with a PSN of 05 or lower) have three short cables that run
from the monitor to the monitor arm. Inside the monitor arm three additional longer cables
connect with the short cables. The longer cables are routed through the system and con-
nect to the distribution board and power supply.
The specified systems use a total of six cables (three short and three long cables). Each
short/long cable pair must be replaced with longer cables if the monitor is replaced. Sys-
tems with SSNs 4275 and above were shipped with longer cables pre-installed at the fac-
tory and are not affected. To determine the appropriate installation procedure, refer to the
flow chart on page 4.

1.1.1 Required Installation Kit

The CRT Arm Mounting Kit adds a reinforcing plate below the top frame for mechanical
support. It is recommended for systems that are frequently shipped or moved (e.g., dem-
onstrations systems). Beginning at approximately SSN 4550 the new mounting hardware
became a typical installation. The installation kit includes all required accessories for com-
pletion of the installation.
Two mounting kits are available:
„ CRT Arm Mounting Kit, Right Mount (M/N 52 84 729)
„ CRT Arm Mounting Kit, Left Mount (M/N 52 84 737)

1.1.2 Required Tools

The installation requires standard field tools.

1.1.3 Preparation

Preparing the Ultrasound System

1. Turn off the system and disconnect the power cable from the external main power source.

! WARNING To avoid damage to the system and to the accessories caused by short circuit or injuries to
yourself caused by electric shock during installation, ensure that you have disconnected
the system power cable from the external main power source before you begin with the
installation.

2. Move the system if necessary to provide enough space for easy access during installation.
3. Lock the wheels to prevent the system from rolling during the installation.

1. Rotate the monitor arm away from the top to expose the bottom.

2. Remove the three screws from the bottom of the monitor arm to remove the top and
bottom covers (Figure 2).
• If short/long cable pairs are connected inside the monitor arm, follow the steps in
section 1.2.1, “Removing Monitors with Short/Long Cable Pairs.”
• If single cables are routed from the SONOLINE Elegra system through the monitor
arm into the monitor, follow the steps in section 1.2.2, ”Removing Monitors with
Single Cables” on page 6.

1.2.1 Removing Monitors with Short/Long Cable Pairs

! WARNING The monitor weighs 65 lb. (29.5 kg). Take appropriate precautions when removing it from
the monitor arm.

1. With the monitor arm top and bottom covers already removed, disconnect the three
monitor cables.
2. Remove the monitor ground strap.
3. Remove four screws to detach the clamp ring from the monitor yoke. Remove the
monitor spacer, if applicable.
4. Carefully remove the monitor from the monitor arm and set it face down on a flat sur-
face.
5. Remove the monitor top cover (Figure 3).
6. Disconnect and remove the monitor cables from the monitor.

1.2.2 Removing Monitors with Single Cables

! WARNING The monitor weighs 65 lbs (29.5 kg). Take appropriate precautions when removing it from
the monitor arm.

1. If you have yet to do so, remove the three screws from the bottom monitor arm to
remove the top and bottom monitor arm covers.
2. Remove the top cover from the monitor.
3. Disconnect the Video Display Cable, Power Cable, and Microphone Cable. Clip any
cable ties securing the cables.
4. Loosen the four screws securing the bottom monitor cover.
5. Pull the three cables out of the monitor through the monitor arm.
6. Remove the monitor ground strap.
7. Remove four screws to detach the clamp ring from the monitor arm. Remove the mon-
itor spacer in the yoke, if applicable.
8. Carefully remove the monitor from the monitor arm.

1.2.3 Removing the CRT Arm

1. Remove the two screws securing the monitor arm ground strap to the ground plate
inside the monitor arm (Figure 4).
2. Remove the monitor arm by removing the six screws (4 long and 2 short screws).
3. Loosen the set screw and remove the threaded spindle nut (Figure 5).

4. Remove the lower clamp ring and Delrin washer.

5. Remove the smaller and larger Delrin washers.
6. Remove the stop plate by removing the two screws. On newer spindles the stop plate
is not removable.
7. Remove the lower CRT arm spindle by loosening the four screws (Figure 5).

1.2.4 Removing the Covers

1. Remove the rear vent panel by removing the two screws that hold it to the body.

NOTICE The access filter panel is attached to the rear vent panel by two Velcro strips. Remove the rear
vent panel carefully because you may accidentally loosen or jar the access filter panel.

2. Remove the back panel by removing the three screws.

3. Remove the left rear upper cover by removing the two screws.
4. Remove the left power supply cover by removing the screw located on the front lower
right.
5. Remove the SCSI bay bezel by detaching the two grey decals located on the front and
removing the two screws. (Earlier models snap off.)
6. Remove the left front upper cover by removing the screw located on the front left.
Loosen the two screws located lower left and right and lift the cover to release the
attached drop hook from its mounting slot located near top left of frame.
7. Remove the right rear upper cover by removing two screws (Figure 5).
8. Remove the right power supply cover (snaps off).
9. Remove the right front upper cover (Figure 5) by removing the screw located front left.
Loosen the two screws located on the lower left and right, and lift the cover to release
the attached drop hook from its mounting slot located near the top left of the frame.
10. Remove the top front cover (Figure 5).
11. Remove the monitor mounting hole cap.
If you are replacing the short/long monitor cable pairs, continue with next section (1.2.5).
Otherwise, refer to ”Replacing the Top Frame” on page 10.

1.2.5 Disconnecting the Monitor Cables

Video Display Cable

1. Determine the cable route of the video display cable to the Distribution Board
(Figure 6).
2. Disconnect the video display cable from J13 on the Distribution Board.
3. Cut all cable ties that fasten the Video Display Cable and remove the cable.

Microphone Cable
1. Determine the cable route of the microphone cable to the Distribution Board.
2. Disconnect the microphone cable connector from J15 on the Distribution Board.
3. Cut all cable ties that fasten the Microphone Cable and remove the cable.

Monitor AC Power Cable

1. Determine the cable route of the monitor AC power cable to the power supply.
2. Disconnect the monitor AC power cable from the power supply connector (J108).

3. Cut all cable ties that fasten the Monitor AC Power Cable and remove the cable.

1.2.6 Connecting the Monitor Cables

1. Route and position the microphone cable, monitor AC power cable, and video display
cable from the Distribution Board, through the frame, and out the top of the unit.

NOTICE When routing the cables across the top of the system, lay the cables side by side. The top front
cover will not lay flat if the cables overlap each other.

2. Connect the monitor AC power cable to the power supply connector (J108).
3. Connect the microphone cable to J15 on the Distribution Board.
4. Connect the video display cable to J13 on the Distribution Board.
5. Use cable ties to attach all cabling to machine anchor points found along the cable
routes.

NOTICE There are 15 machine anchor points to which monitor cables must be anchored. Be sure to anchor
any additional cables whose cable ties were cut during the monitor cable removal procedure.

6. The monitor cables have a tendency to become pinched between the ground strap lug
and a screw. To solve this problem, install a cable tie within the swing arm directly blow
the monitor opening. The figure below illustrates the recommended solution.

1.2.7 Replacing the Top Frame

If you are installing a CRT monitor upgrade, then follow the steps outlined in this section.
Otherwise, proceed with ”Installing the Covers” on page 11.
1. Remove the TI cover.
2. Remove the rear handle.
3. Remove the top frame.
4. Install the top plate under the new top frame and secure it with two screws. Be certain
to install the plate on the side on which the monitor will be mounted. Figure 8 shows
the plate installed for right-side monitor configuration.
5. Attach the top frame.
6. Connect the rear handle.
7. Install the TI cover.

1.2.8 Installing the Covers

1. Install the top front cover.
2. Install the monitor mounting hole cap.
3. Install the left front upper cover so that the two brackets (bottom left and right) are over
their corresponding screws, and the cover-attached drop hook is over its mounting slot
(top of left frame).
4. Slide the left front upper cover into its mounting position and insert the screw located
front left.
5. Tighten the two screws located lower left and right.
6. Install the SCSI bay bezel and secure it in place with two screws.
7. Attach the two grey decals over each screw.
8. Install the left power supply cover and secure in place with one screw located front
lower right.
9. Install the left rear upper cover and secure in place with two screws.
10. Install the right front upper cover so that the two brackets (bottom left and right) are
over their corresponding screws, and the cover-attached drop hook is over its mount-
ing slot (top of left frame).
11. Slide the right front upper cover into its mounting position and insert the screw located
front left.
12. Tighten the two screws.
13. Install the right power supply cover.
14. Install the right rear upper cover and secure in place with two screws.
15. Install the back cover assembly and secure in place with two screws.
16. Install the rear vent panel and secure in place with two screws.

NOTICE The access filter panel is attached to the rear vent panel by two Velcro strips. It may become loose
or jar free when you are installing the rear vent panel.

1.2.9 Installing the CRT Arm

1. Route the monitor cables through the lower CRT arm spindle, then install the lower
CRT arm spindle and secure in place with four screws (Figure 4). A new spindle is pro-
vided with the CRT Arm Monitor Kit.
2. Install the larger Delrin washer first and then the smaller Delrin washer.

NOTICE Install the spindle with the raised detent positioned to the rear of the system.

3. Install the lower clamp ring and Delrin washer.

4. Install the threaded spindle nut on the spindle. Finger tighten so that the arm moves
freely but does not rock back and forth. Lightly tighten the set screw.
5. Pull the cables through the monitor arm and secure the arm in place with four screws.
6. Attach the monitor arm ground strap to the ground plate inside the monitor arm.
7. Check that the arm swings freely through 180 degrees of motion across the system front.
8. Continue the installation with next section (1.2.10).

1.2.10 Installing the Monitor

1. Position the monitor on top of the SONOLINE Elegra system with the monitor neck
near the monitor arm yoke.
2. Set the monitor on the monitor arm yoke.
3. Install the clamp ring (and the monitor spacer if applicable) to the monitor arm with four
screws.

NOTICE Position the tang on the lower clamp ring so that it faces the rear of the monitor.

1.2.11 Connecting the Monitor Cables to the Monitor

1. Loosen the screws securing the lower monitor cover and thread all monitor cables
through the monitor arm yoke.
2. Attach the monitor ground strap.
3. Route and connect the Video Display Cable inside the monitor.
4. Route and connect the Microphone Cable inside the monitor.
5. Route and connect the Monitor AC Power Cable inside the monitor.

1.2.12 Installing the Monitor Arm Covers

1. Install the top and bottom monitor arm covers with two screws through the bottom
monitor arm cover.
2. Tighten the screws securing the lower monitor cover.
3. Install the top monitor cover with two screws.

1.3 Operational Test

1. Turn on the system and wait for the system to complete the startup sequence. After
startup, confirm that an appropriate 2D-mode image is displayed on the monitor
screen.
2. Insert a blank, professional grade S-VHS video tape and reset the VCR counter.
3. Press the Record/Pause button on the SONOLINE Elegra control panel to begin
recording.
4. Press the Mic/Volume button on the control panel to activate the system microphone.
5. While recording, speak into the microphone to record a short audio segment. Turn the
microphone off when you are done.
6. Press the Record/Pause control to pause recording. Verify that the LED above the
Pause button on the VCR control panel is lit and that the tape counter has stopped
counting.
7. Press the VCR Stop softkey.
8. Press the VCR Rewind softkey to rewind the video tape to the beginning of the recording.
9. Press the VCR Play softkey and verify that the recorded scan is displayed on the mon-
itor and verify that the voice annotation is played back through the speakers.
10. Press the Eject button on the VCR front panel and remove the tape.
