Rational use of PPE
The document provides guidelines for rational use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. It recommends minimizing PPE use by emphasizing hand hygiene and only wearing masks when necessary. For healthcare settings, it recommends medical masks, gowns, gloves, and eye protection when in direct contact with COVID-19 patients, and respirators for aerosol-generating procedures. It provides PPE recommendations for various healthcare, laboratory, administrative, and community settings based on personnel, activity, and transmission risk.

Department of Microbiology Zydus Medical College & Hospital Dahod How to optimize the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE)?
1. Minimize the need for PPE: (Table-1)
• Hand hygiene remains one of the most important measures
• Wearing a medical mask is one of the prevention measures to
limit spread of certain respiratory diseases, including 2019-nCoV, is useful when worn by the persons suffering from the disease or contacts of the patients. 2. Ensure PPE use is rationalized and appropriate • PPE should be used based on the risk of exposure (e.g., type of activity) and the transmission dynamics of the pathogen (e.g., contact droplet or aerosol). • Use of a mask alone is insufficient to provide the adequate level of protection and other equally relevant measures should be adopted. • For asymptomatic individuals, wearing a mask of any type is not recommended. • Wearing medical masks when they are not indicated may cause: •Unnecessary cost and a procurement burden •Create a false sense of security that can lead to the neglect of other essential preventive measures such as hand hygiene.
