Minotaur
Hospitality has well exceeded all reasonable expectations given the remoteness
and isolation of the habitation. We have been treated quite well as guests of
Agathon and his family, and my companions say they have eaten their fill and
more. I took the Minotaur as a strictly agrarian people, but have learned that
they are quite advanced in their understanding of technology. I was able to
perform some minor repairs and maintenance using tools provided by
Agathon’s son, Eutropius, who also assisted me in the procedures. I find the
stories ofMinotaur savagery to be without basis, at least in our experience.
Excerpt from traveljournalofEffee (CDoc ANTH-062-8bap)
Many alien races on post-Fall Earth carry common names based on their
appearance or some notable ability or behavior, but few names fit the bill like
the Minotaur. This race of bovine humanoids looks as if it were plucked
from the pages of a classical Greek text or from any of the countless pieces
of popular fiction that the ancient works inspired. With the head, legs, and
tail of a bull or cow, and a humanoid body, they are the legendary creature
incarnate.
As for their station in the
current day, Minotaur are
fixtures of the Civilized Lands
and beyond, known for their
physical strength and endurance,
and for their strength of family and
community. More than most alien
races, these aliens exist in groups,
cordially dealing with other
races as needs be, but
maintaining close-knit
personal circles with their
own kind.
Origins
The Minotaur were the child-race of
their world, coming into their own as a
civilization after the decline and eventual
disappearance of an elder species. A
millennium after the first race vanished,
leaving behind little more than the ruins of
stone temples, the Minotaur inherited a world
with a brightening sun and failing soil. Their

histories are riddled with stories of gradual extinctions and harshening

conditions that made the lives of the farmers who were charged with feeding
the population more and more difficult. Minotaur archaeologists and
scientists eventually looked to the ancient temples for any clue as to how to
avoid the global tragedy that was slowly coming with the passing of each year.
It was in these temples that the Gates of the ancient race were discovered,
and many Minotaur families decided to brave the unknown of what waited
beyond them.
The Minotaur of the Civilized Lands originate from a Breach from the
South, near what was once San Antonio, Texas. These lands being untamed
and dangerous, Minotaur headed north to first settle along the banks of the
lakes and rivers found in the region, where soil was rested and crops grew
easily. Over time, they spread across the region, both in isolated settlements
among themselves, or moving into the towns and villages that they found.

Shared history
Opinions vary on what the existence of Minotaur means about Earth’s
history and myths. It’s possible that the existence of bovine humanoids and
their similarity to the Greek creatures of legend is only a coincidence, but
most observers believe the link to be more substantial. Given the known
instability of dimensional barriers and the unpredictable nature of space-time
related to the Breaches, it seems possible that The Fall may have caused some
Breaches to appear in ancient times, thus transporting Minotaur or other alien
beings or creatures to classical Greece. It’s also possible that there was more
to Ovid, author of the first recorded tales of the Minotaur, and some of his
contemporaries than we have ever understood. Whatever the shared history
between Earth and the Minotaur homeworld, it remains a mystery for now.
Disposition
Minotaur have an unfair reputation of being mindless brutes, even going so
far as to be classified as an animal or monster rather than an intelligent race.
This is largely due to their size and strength, coupled with their resemblance
to an animal native to Earth. The cerebral-chemical affliction known as the
Brain Sickness, or Mad Minotaur Disease, further supports this notion.
In fact, Minotaur are highly intelligent, even-tempered, and adaptable to
life on Earth. Their natural strength and endurance makes them ideal for a
number of different careers where such traits are an asset, and they may be
found working as anything from farmers to hired soldiers, or using their
other gifts as teachers, mechanics, or any other job that can meet their needs.
Families and Clans
The Minotaur are a mild-mannered people with strong inclination toward
family and community. They live in clans consisting mostly of extended
family, but with new blood regularly brought in through a mate-selection
process that can be described as a “suitor swap.” Two young bulls from
different clans, when ready to begin families of their own, simply trade places
and each marry into the new clan.
Such unions are rarely political in nature, as groups of Minotaur tend to
remain isolated from each other and have few formal dealings between their
respective leaders. In times of need or trouble, Minotaur are expected to
come to each others’ assistance, and the practice of intermarriage reinforces
that.
Habitat
As they have a strong tradition for farming, Minotaur clans are often found
living in areas that support crops, particularly along rivers and streams that
5

can be used for irrigation. They make homes in large lodge-type huts,
constructed from whatever materials that may be available. They are fond of
closed-in places where possible, with low ceilings and no windows, lit with
lanterns or torches.
When living in settlements with other races, individual Minotaur or clans
often live apart, in whatever isolation they can manage. If the situation
demands close quarters, a Minotaur will usually prefer to avoid many
emotional attachments where possible. They are typically cordial, but simply
what may be described as introverted.
Description
Minotaur are very large, with a powerful frame. They have humanoid bodies
with a cow's head, legs, and hooves, with a tail. Their entire bodies are
covered in hair of varying colors, similar in its diversity to various breeds of
Earth cattle. The hair may be solid black, brown, gray, white, or red, or have
mixed coloring or spots of a combination of colors. Males have curved
horns up to around 3 feet (0.9 m) long, while females' horns are only short
stubs; horns of either gender are not generally effective as weapons, given the
fully biped stature of a Minotaur. Their hands are simpler than that of a
human, consisting of a thumb, one broad index finger, and a wide second
finger. Females have small udders on their stomachs, which are not obvious
unless nursing, and are easily hidden under typical Minotaur dress.
Minotaur clothing tends to be loose and breezy, so as not to restrict
movement. Materials tend toward wool, cotton, and other natural cloths.
Also Known As
Bullheads or Cow People.

New Perk
Strong (1). Through natural aptitude or diligent training, you can lift and
endure far more weight than others. Add +2D to Lift, and gain the
specialization of Lifting in the Stamina skill.
Additional Perk Note
While male Minotaur have long horns, they do not usually make effective
weapons due to the Minotaur's upright stature. At the GM's option, a male
Minotaur character may opt to practice using his horns in combat, thus
gaining the Perk of Natural Weapon, Light at the usual cost.

Mad Minotaur Disease
While all Minotaur are veget-
arians by practice, physiolo-
gically they are actually
omnivorous and can digest
meat in the same way as a
human. However, the
Minotaur's body is unable
to break down certain en-
zymes found in flesh,
whether cooked or raw. These
chemicals are distributed in
the blood to the brain, where
they collect over time, alter-
ing a Minotaur's mind.
Any Minotaur that con-
sumes a total of 3 lbs
(1.4 kg) of meat in his
or her lifetime is trans-
formed into a flesh-
hungry beast, usually los-
ing any semblance of
his or her former self.
The only remaining
desire is to consume
more flesh and blood, at
any cost. Minotaur call this the Brain Sickness, but it is more commonly
known among the denizens of Breachworld as Mad Minotaur Disease. This
affliction may be the source of ancient tales of the Minotaur as a mytholo-
gical monster rather than a race of intelligent beings.
Obviously this fate is a terrible possibility to any civilized Minotaur, so great
care is taken to avoid contamination. In the desperation of survival,
however, many opt to consume flesh rather than starve. Some warlords or
would-be conquerors have been known to starve out or force-feed captive
Minotaur to create savage shock troops or monstrous pets, which they can
then at least somewhat control by feeding their desires. The worst may even
breed Minotaur to create the strongest and most intelligent specimens
possible, and then feed them enough flesh to drive them mad. The brightest
Mad Minotaur, properly conditioned, may retain limited use of its conscious
mind. These Alphas make formidable and savage opponents in battle.

Quick-Stat NPCs
These short-form NPCs are presented for ease of reference for the Game
Master. Each is a character of low to moderate experience, so the GM should
adjust stats to fit the needs of his or her game as appropriate. Some charac-
ters are noted as being "typical" and list suggested names that may be used
when fleshing out the character. Other stat blocks depict specific, uniquely
named individuals.
For all characters, the aspects of the Racial Perk of Strong are already
incorporated into the stats. The Racial Complication of Diet is also not
specifically included in the stat block, but still applies in all cases. Bonuses to
Soak granted by armor, if applicable, are not included in the given Combat
Stats.
