Abstract

Examination of type specimens and topotypic material is often a necessary step to ascertain the validity of a species.
Consequently, solid knowledge about type series, type locality and type depository is critical. In this paper, we provide a
thorough review of the mosquito species originally described from specimens collected in French Guiana, with specific
emphasis on the location of the current depositories of type material, the composition of type series and the delimitation
of type localities. Information already published about the mosquito type material from French Guiana was gathered and
efforts were made to ascertain the current location of their depositories. This investigation made it possible to locate a large
part of the existing type material and to provide corrected information on type series and type localities, therefore providing
a strong basis for future taxonomic research on mosquitoes. The type locality of Culex (Culex) pseudojanthinosoma
Senevet & Abonnenc is corrected from French Guiana to Africa, and this species is synonymized with Culex (Culex)
duttoni Theobald.

Key words: holotype, lectotype, South America, type depository, type locality

Introduction

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are the most medically important insects on Earth given their ability to transmit
pathogens to humans. Considering that vector role is frequently species specific, the delimitation and description
of species is rapidly becoming an important goal. In complex taxonomic groups such as mosquitoes, examination
of type and topotypic material is often a necessary step to ascertain the validity of a species. Consequently, solid
knowledge about type series, type locality and type depository is critical.
French Guiana is a small French territory (ca. 83,500 km²) situated in the north of South America, bordered to
the west by Suriname and to the east and south by the Brazilian state of Amapá. Research on mosquitoes has been
very active in this territory, most notably in the first decades after the Pasteur Institute was established in Cayenne
around 1940, leading to the discovery and the description of numerous mosquito species. Today, many of those
species are still so poorly or incompletely known that there is doubt and confusion about their identification in the
region (Talaga et al. 2015; Talaga et al. 2017; Nascimento-Pereira et al. 2019).
In this paper, we provide a thorough review of the mosquito species originally described from specimens col-
lected in French Guiana, with specific emphasis on the current location of type material, the composition of type
series and the delimitation of type localities.
Historically, Belkin et al. (1965) were the first authors to provide updated information on mosquito type mate-
rial from French Guiana. The information was confirmed, including up-to-date information on depositories, during
visits to European museums (Belkin 1968). On that occasion, j. n. Belkin established that the type material of

haemorrhoidalis (Fabricius), originally deposited in the Laboratoire de Parasitologie de la Faculté de Médecine,
Alger (LPFM), the Faculté de Médecine, Paris (FMP) and the Universitetets Zoologiske Museum, Copenhagen
(ZMC), was non-existent. Belkin also reported transfer of the type material of the following nominal species from
the LPFM or the Institut Pasteur d’Algérie, Alger (IPA) to the FMP: Cx. breviculus Senevet & Abonnenc, Cx.
pseudojanthinosoma Senevet & Abonnenc, Cx. radiatus Senevet & Abonnenc [synonym of Cx. pilosus (Dyar &
Knab)], Cx. tisseuli Senevet [synonym of Cx. mollis Dyar & Knab], Limatus martiali Senevet & Abonnenc, Wyeo-

& Abonnenc [synonym of Wy. chalcocephala Dyar & Knab], Wy. robusta Senevet & Abonnenc, Wy. rorotai Senevet,
Chabelard & Abonnenc and Wy. testei Senevet & Abonnenc.
In March 1972, J. Clastrier donated his extensive collection of mosquitoes made in French Guiana from 1967
to 1969 to the project “Mosquitoes of Middle America”, including type material of Cx. guyanensis Clastrier, Cx.
abonnenci Clastrier, Cx. caudatus Clastrier, Cx. dolichophyllus Clastrier and Cx. seneveti Clastrier [synonym of Cx.
contei Duret] but not the type material of Cx. menui Clastrier [synonym of Cx. damascenoi Duret], Cx. trigeminatus
Clastrier, Wy. forattinii Clastrier and Wy. trifurcata Clastrier (Heinemann & Belkin 1978). In fact, the type material
of Cx. abonnenci (in part), Cx. caudatus (in part), Cx. dolichophyllus and Cx. seneveti (in part) were returned to
Clastrier at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (MNHP) in April 1987 (J. Pecor, personal communication).
In October 1972, B.A. Harrison (now deceased) found in the Institut Pasteur, Paris (IPP) the holotypes of Cx.
punctiscapularis Floch & Abonnenc and Cx. rabanicolus Floch & Abonnenc that were reported as presumably lost
by Belkin (1968). On the other hand, the type material of An. canorii Floch & Abonnenc, Cx. cauchensis Floch
& Abonnenc, Cx. cavernicolus Floch & Abonnenc [synonym of Cx. putumayensis Matheson], Cx. cayennensis
Senevet & Abonnenc [synonym of Cx. portesi Senevet & Abonnenc] and Cx. equinoxialis Floch & Abonnenc, pre-
viously reportedly found in the IPP by Belkin (1968), were not found there (Harrison 1973).
In 1980, N. Dégallier and J. Claustre found the type material of Cx. manaensis Floch & Fauran [synonym of
Cx. antunesi Lane & Whitman], Cx. patientiae Floch & Fauran, Cx. reginae Floch & Fauran, Cx. rorotaensis Floch
& Abonnenc and Cx. vidali Floch & Fauran in the Institut Pasteur de la Guyane (IPG), which they then transferred
to the MNHP. They also found that the type material of Ae. martineti, Cx. breviculus, Cx. pseudojanthinosoma, Cx.
radiatus, Cx. tisseuli, Li. martiali, Wy. albocaerulea, Wy. compta, Wy. luciae, Wy. robusta and Wy. rorotai, previously
reported to be in the LPFM, had been transferred to the MNHP (Dégallier & Claustre 1980).
After the entomological collection of the FMP was moved to the IPP, Rodhain & Boutonnier (1985) listed the
mosquito type material deposited there but only included for French Guiana the holotypes of Cx. punctiscapularis
and Cx. rabanicolus, which had already been reported by Harrison (1973).
Finally, in their catalog and illustrated review of the subgenus Melanoconion of Culex, Pecor et al. (1992)
established that the type material of Cx. cauchensis, Cx. cavernicolus, Cx. cayennensis and Cx. equinoxialis was
non-extant.

Materials and methods

A list of mosquito species originally described from French Guiana was first compiled from A catalog of the mos-
quitoes of the world (Knight & Stone 1977) and its first two supplements (Knight 1978; Ward 1984). Information
published about the type material of those species was gathered and an effort was made to determine their current
location. Type material was searched for in the entomological collections (including loan forms) of the following
French institutions: Institut Pasteur de la Guyane, Cayenne (IPG); Institut Pasteur, Paris (IPP); Muséum national
d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHP) and Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Montpellier (IRD). The loca-
tion of type material deposited in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington,
DC, USA (NMNH) and the Universitetets Zoologiske Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark (ZMC) was confirmed
thanks to the curators currently in charge of the collections.
Type series. Type series were defined based on articles and recommendations provided in the Internation-

al Code of the Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999).
Senevet (1937), Senevet & Abonnenc (1938, 1939a, 1939b, 1941), Senevet et al. (1942), Floch & Abonnenc (1945a,
1945b, 1945c, 1946a, 1946b), Floch & Fauran (1954, 1955), Fauran (1961), Fauran & Pajot (1974) and Pajot &
Fauran (1975) explicitly designated holotypes (as “types”) and paratypes (when available), thus clearly indicating
the composition of the type series. However, in a few cases specimens other than the explicitly designated holotypes
and paratypes were listed (Floch & Abonnenc 1945a, 1945b, 1946a). Based on ICZN Articles 72.4.1 and 72.4.6,
those specimens should be expressly excluded from the type series and are not considered here to be type specimens.
Clastrier (1970a, 1970b, 1970c, 1971, 1973, 1974) and Clastrier & Claustre (1978a, 1978b) explicitly distinguished
holotypes, allotypes (when available) and sometimes listed other specimens that were apparently considered by J.
Clastrier as cotypes (see Clastrier 1974). In accordance with ICZN Article 72.4.5 and Recommendation 73E, these
specimens should be considered as paratypes, and are interpreted here as such.
Type localities. Type localities were clarified in accordance to the ICZN Recommendation 76A. The geographi-
cal designation of the type locality is listed in most cases as it was stated in the original publication, with the correct
spelling of French words. The larger geographical entities used in the original descriptions often referred to former
administrative entities which are useless today and prone to more confusion (e.g. Haute-Mana can refer to the upper
part of the Mana River or the former municipality of Haute-Mana). Consequently, former administrative entities
were removed and replaced by clearly identified larger geographical entities (e.g. Island of Cayenne or Sinnamary
River). Corrected information for type localities is indicated in square brackets in the list below.

Results

Mosquitoes originally described from French Guiana. Species described from French Guiana are listed chrono-
logically below and numbered (by order of appearance when more than one species is described in the same paper).
Species names are followed by their authorship, date of publication and the page number in the publication where
the description begins. Parentheses around that information indicate that a species is currently placed in a genus
other than the one in which the author(s) originally placed it. Life stages described (abbreviated as A, adult; M,
male; F, female; P, pupa; L, larva) and, if applicable, the genus in which the author(s) originally placed the species,
follow the date and page number. Type information is presented as follows. Primary type, life stage and associated
material in parentheses (if applicable): type locality and depository in parentheses (NE if non-extant); name(s) of the
collector(s); date of collection; and original specimen number (if provided). An asterisk indicates that the depository
was confirmed during this study. Additional information about synonymy, lectotype designation, type series, type
locality and/or type depository is also provided.
A total of 55 nominal mosquito species have been described from French Guiana since 1787, 16 of which are
currently considered as synonyms (Fig. 1). The holotypes and lectotypes are now deposited in five institutions: IRD
(2 species), MNHP (29 species), NMNH (1 species), IPP (7 species) and ZMC (4 species). The type specimens of
12 species are non-extant (NE). Valid species names and a single nomen dubium are highlighted in bold whereas
currently synonymous names are not.

and pupal exuviae): Rorota, [Island of Cayenne], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 6 July 1939; no.
M.1543.
Wyeomyia rorotai was synonymized with Wy. pseudopecten Dyar & Knab by Lane (1951: 335). The species was
resurrected from synonymy and a lectotype designated by Belkin (1968: 42). The type series (lectotype and eight
paralectotypes, nos M.1544 to M.1551), originally deposited in the LPFM, was found in the MNHP by Dégallier &
Claustre (1980: 144).

28. Wyeomyia luciae Senevet, Chabelard & Abonnenc, 1942: 343 (M, P, L). Holotype M (with associated larval and
pupal exuviae): Port Inini, [Tonnegrande River], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 18 Aug. 1939; no.
M.1552.
Wyeomyia luciae was synonymized with Wy. chalcocephala Dyar & Knab by Lane (1951: 335). This synonymy
was questioned by Belkin (1968: 40) but retained in A catalog of the mosquitoes of the world (Knight & Stone 1977:
328). The holotype is wrongly numbered M.1553 in the original publication (Belkin 1968: 40). The holotype, origi-
nally deposited in the LPFM, was found in the MNHP by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 144).

29. Culex cauchensis Floch & Abonnenc, 1945a: 1 (M). Holotype M: Caux, French Guiana (IPP*); coll. E. Abon-
nenc; 25 Apr. 1943; no. 685 bis.
One specimen listed in the original publication is wrongly designated as a paratype by Dégallier & Claustre
(1980: 143). The holotype of Cx. cauchensis, originally deposited in the IPG, was found in the IPP by Belkin (1968:
14) but was not seen by Harrison (1973: 279) nor Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143) and was established as non-ex-
tant by Pecor et al. (1992: 61). The holotype was found in the general collection of the IPP during this study.

30. Culex cayennensis Floch & Abonnenc, 1945a: 4 (M). Holotype M: Cayenne, French Guiana (IPP*); coll. E.
Abonnenc; 17 Jan. 1940; no. 286.
Culex cayennensis was synonymized with Cx. vomerifer by Lane (1953: 430), resurrected from synonymy by
Floch & Kramer (1965: 3) and finally synonymized with Cx. portesi by Aitken & Galindo (1966: 198). The holo-
type (wrongly dated from 1941 in the original publication), originally deposited in the IPG, was found in the IPP
by Belkin (1968: 14) but was not seen by Harrison (1973: 279), and was established as non-extant by Pecor et al.
(1992: 61). The holotype was found in the general collection of the IPP during this study. The rest of the type series
(paratype no. 285) is deposited in the MNHP.

31. Culex cavernicolus Floch & Abonnenc, 1945b: 1 (M). Holotype M: Cayenne, French Guiana (IPP*); coll. E.
Abonnenc; 17 Jan. 1940; no. 280.
Culex cavernicolus was synonymized with Cx. putumayensis Matheson by Rozeboom & Komp (1950: 95).
The spelling of the name of this species was unjustifiably changed to cavernicola by Knight & Stone (1977) (see
discussion in Harbach 2018). Two specimens listed in the original publication are wrongly designated as paratypes
by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143). The holotype of Cx. cavernicolus, originally deposited in the IPG, was found

in the IPP by Belkin (1968: 14) but was not seen by Harrison (1973: 279) nor Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143), and
was established as non-extant by Pecor et al. (1992: 61). The holotype was found in the general collection of the IPP
during this study.

32. Culex equinoxialis Floch & Abonnenc, 1945b: 3 (M). Holotype M: Camp Rochambeau, [Island of Cayenne],
French Guiana (IPP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 29 May 1943; no. 687.
Two specimens listed in the original publication were wrongly designated as paratypes by Dégallier & Claus-
tre (1980: 143). The holotype of Cx. equinoxialis, originally deposited in the IPG, was found in the IPP by Belkin
(1968: 15) but was not seen by Harrison (1973: 279) nor Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143) and was established
as non-extant by Pecor et al. (1992: 61). The holotype was found in the general collection of the IPP during this
study.

33. Anopheles canorii Floch & Abonnenc, 1945c: 1 (M). Holotype M: Saut Canori, [Approuague River], French
Guiana (IPP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 13 Feb. 1944; no. 704.
The holotype of An. canorii was originally deposited in the IPP and examined there by Belkin (1968: 9), but was
not seen by Harrison (1973: 279). The holotype was found in the general collection of the IPP during this study.

34. Culex pseudojanthinosoma Senevet & Abonnenc, 1946: 139 (F, L) [synonymized here with Cx. duttoni Theo-
bald, 1901]. Holotype F (with associated larval and pupal exuviae): [Africa] (MNHP*); coll. not indicated; date not
provided; no. M.1553.
Culex pseudojanthinosoma was synonymized with Cx. corniger by Lane (1951: 334) and resurrected from syn-
onymy by Senevet & Abonnenc (1958: 345). The holotype and one of the two paratypes (no. M.1555), originally
deposited in the IPA, were transferred to the FMP (Belkin 1968: 19) and later found in the MNHP by Dégallier &
Claustre (1980: 144).
Examination of the holotype revealed that this species cannot be separated from the most recent description of the
female, pupa and larva of Cx. duttoni Theobald, which is unusual considering that this species is restricted to the
Afrotropical Region (Harbach 1988: 82). In the original description of Cx. pseudojanthinosoma, Senevet & Abon-
nenc (1946: 138) stated that the type material was in the IPA among a series of Psorophora (Janthinosoma) from
French Guiana. We believe that the type material of Cx. pseudojanthinosoma came from Africa and was misplaced
among Psorophora from French Guiana and wrongly listed as being from that territory. The doubtful origin of the
type material is corroborated by the lack of information about the type collection, which is unusual for the authors
as they always provided many details on type locality and date of collection (this study). Consequently, Cx. pseu-
dojanthinosoma Senevet & Abonnenc is recognized here as a junior synonym of Cx. duttoni Theobald (see above).
The type locality of Cx. pseudojanthinosoma is here changed from French Guiana to Africa and the collection data
other than the original specimen numbers are considered to be erroneous.

35. Culex rabanicolus Floch & Abonnenc, 1946a: 1 (M). Holotype M: [Chemin de] Raban, [Island of Cayenne],
French Guiana (IPP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 5 Aug. 1943; no. 696.
The spelling of the name of this species was unjustifiably changed to rabanicola by Knight & Stone (1977:
264) (see discussion in Harbach 2018). Two specimens listed in the original publication were wrongly designated
as paratypes by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143). The holotype of Cx. rabanicolus, originally deposited in the IPG,
was found in the IPP by Harrison (1973: 278).

36. Culex rorotaensis Floch & Abonnenc, 1946a: 3 (M). Holotype M: Rorota, [Island of Cayenne], French Guiana
(MNHP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 28 Nov. 1942; no. 655a.
Five specimens listed in the original publication were wrongly designated as paratypes by Dégallier & Claustre
(1980: 143). The holotype of Cx. rorotaensis, originally deposited in the IPG, was transferred to the MNHP by Dé-
gallier & Claustre (1980: 143).

37. Culex punctiscapularis Floch & Abonnenc, 1946b: 1 (M). Holotype M: [Poste de] Crique Anguille, [Tonne-
grande River], French Guiana (IPP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 18 June 1945; no. 748 bis.
Culex punctiscapularis was synonymized with Cx. nigrimacula Lane & Whitman by Lane (1951: 334) and res-
urrected from synonymy by Duret (1969: 122). The holotype (wrongly dated from 1946 in the original publication),
originally deposited in the IPG, was found in the IPP by Harrison (1973: 278). According to Duret (1969: 124), the
only paratype (no. 748) of Cx. punctiscapularis is deposited in the NMNH but this could not be confirmed.

38. Culex vidali Floch & Fauran, 1954: 4 (M). Holotype M: Moulin de Vidal, [Island of Cayenne], French Guiana
(MNHP*); coll. P. Fauran; 10 Nov. 1954; no. 941.
Culex vidali was synonymized with Cx. phlogistus Dyar by Fauran (1961: 5). This synonymy was recognized
by Stone (1961: 47) but not by Knight & Stone (1977: 266). The holotype, originally deposited in the IPG, was
transferred to the MNHP by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 144).

39. Culex patientiae Floch & Fauran, 1955: 1 (M genitalia only). Holotype M (genitalia only): Patience, [Mana
River], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; Aug. 1945; no. 942.
The holotype of Cx. patientiae, originally deposited in the IPG, was transferred to the MNHP by Dégallier &
Claustre (1980: 143).

40. Culex manaensis Floch & Fauran, 1955: 3 (M). Holotype M (with associated pupal exuviae): [Bœuf Mort],
[Saül], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; date not provided; no. 909A, B.
Culex manaensis was synonymized with Cx. antunesi Lane & Whitman by Valencia (1973: 73). The holotype,
originally deposited in the IPG, was transferred to the MNHP by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143).

41. Culex reginae Floch & Fauran, 1955: 5 (M genitalia only). Holotype M (genitalia only): Régina, [Approuague
River], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. E. Abonnenc; 12 Feb. 1945; no. 941.
The holotype of Cx. reginae, originally deposited in the IPG, was transferred to the MNHP by Dégallier &
Claustre (1980: 144).

42. Culex trisetosus Fauran, 1961: 1 (M). Holotype M: Confluent des rivières Oyac et Conté, Saint-Antoine, French
Guiana (MNHP*); coll. P. Fauran; 4 Feb. 1957.
The type series of Cx. trisetosus was originally divided and deposited in the MNHP (holotype), the IPG (three
paratypes) and the NMNH (one paratype) (Fauran 1961: 3). The three paratypes originally deposited in the IPG
were transferred to the MNHP by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 144).

43. Culex guyanensis Clastrier, 1970a: 116 (M). Holotype M: Forêt de Cabassou, [Island of] Cayenne, French Gui-
ana (MNHP*); coll. J. Clastrier; 24 May 1968; no. 3425-12.
Despite all of our efforts, only the pinned holotype male of Cx. guyanensis (loaned by J. Clastrier to Berlin &
Belkin (1980: 17) for their revision of the subgenera Aedinus, Tinolestes and Anoedioporpa of Culex) was found in
the MNHP during this study. We consider that the microscope slide bearing the genitalia of the holotype is probably
misplaced in the MNHP.

44. Culex seneveti Clastrier, 1970b: 464 (M). Holotype M: Forêt de Cabassou, [Island of] Cayenne, French Guiana
(MNHP); coll. J. Clastrier; 15 June 1968; no. 3328-47.
Culex seneveti was synonymized with Cx. contei Duret by Sirivanakarn (1983: 274). Despite all of our efforts,
the holotype was not found. Because the holotype (pinned male and microscope slide with the dissected genitalia)
and one paratype (no. 3345-5, microscope slide with the male genitalia only) were returned to J. Clastrier in 1987
(J. Pecor, personal communication), we consider that this type material is probably misplaced in the MNHP. Nine
paratypes, (no. 3248-14, 3248-27 (both only male genitalia on microscope slides), 3248-28, 3256-9, 3345-40, 3345-
42, 3345-45, 3328-48 and 3328-59 are still in the NMNH (D. Pecor, personal communication). One other paratype
(no. 3478-28, microscope slide with male genitalia only) was found the IRD during this study.

45. Culex abonnenci Clastrier, 1970b: 468 (M). Holotype M: Forêt du Gallion, French Guiana (MNHP); coll. J.
Clastrier; 12 June 1968; no. 3477-5.
Despite all of our efforts, the holotype of Cx. abonnenci was not found. Because the holotype (pinned male and
microscope slide with the dissected genitalia) was returned to J. Clastrier in 1987 (J. Pecor, personal communica-
tion), we consider that the specimen is probably misplaced in the MNHP. The paratype (no. 3477-13, microscope
slide with the male genitalia only) is still in the NMNH (D. Pecor, personal communication).

46. Culex caudatus Clastrier, 1970b: 470 (M). Holotype M: Forêt de Cabassou, [Island of Cayenne], French Guiana
(MNHP); coll. J. Clastrier; 4 Sept. 1967; no. 3247-21.
Despite all of our efforts, the holotype of Cx. caudatus was not found. Because the holotype (pinned male and
microscope slide with the dissected genitalia) was returned to J. Clastrier in 1987 (J. Pecor, personal communica-
tion), we consider that this specimen is probably misplaced in the MNHP. The paratype of this species (no. 3242-15,
microscope slide with the male genitalia only) is still in the NMNH (D. Pecor, personal communication).

47. Culex trigeminatus Clastrier, 1970b: 473 (M). Holotype M: Forêt du Gallion, French Guiana (MNHP); coll. J.
Clastrier; 19 Apr. 1968; no. 3381-1.
Despite all of our efforts, the holotype of Cx. trigeminatus, provisionally deposited in the personal collection
of J. Clastrier (Clastrier 1970b: 464), was not found. We consider that this specimen is probably misplaced in the
MNHP.

48. Culex dolichophyllus Clastrier, 1970c: 858 (M). Holotype M: Forêt de Cabassou, [Island of] Cayenne, French
Guiana (MNHP); coll. J. Clastrier; 19 May 1968; no. 3421-7.
Despite all of our efforts, the holotype of Cx. dolichophyllus was not found. Because the holotype (pinned male
and microscope slide with the dissected genitalia) was returned to J. Clastrier in 1987, we consider that this speci-
men is probably misplaced in the MNHP.

49. Culex menui Clastrier, 1971: 649 (M, P). Holotype M (with associated pupal exuviae): Maripasoula, [Lawa
River], French Guiana (MNHP); coll. J. Clastrier; 24 Aug. 1968; no. 3612-30.
Culex menui was synonymized with Cx. damascenoi Duret by Berlin & Belkin (1980: 42). Despite all of our
efforts, the holotype, provisionally deposited in the personal collection of J. Clastrier (Clastrier 1971: 653), was not
found. We consider that this specimen is probably misplaced in the MNHP.

50. Wyeomyia trifurcata Clastrier, 1973: 39 (M, F, P, L). Holotype M (with associated larval and pupal exuviae):
Tonnégrande, [Tonnegrande River], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. J. Clastrier; 6 Sept. 1968; no. 3631-15.
The type series of Wy. trifurcata (holotype, allotype no. 3689-31 and five paratypes, nos 3689-32, 3691-35, 3778-41,
3786-24 and 3794-20), provisionally deposited in the personal collection of J. Clastrier (Clastrier 1973: 46), was
found in the MNHP during this study (microscope slides only).

51. Wyeomyia ininicola Fauran & Pajot, 1974: 145 (M). Holotype M: [Station expérimentale de l’Institut Pasteur
de la Guyane], [Inini River], French Guiana (IRD*); coll. F.X. Pajot; 2 June 1973; no. 73/286-2.
The holotype of Wy. ininicola, provisionally deposited in the IPG (Fauran & Pajot 1974: 148), was found in the
IRD during this study.

52. Wyeomyia forattinii Clastrier, 1974: 155 (M, F, P, L). Holotype M (with associated larval and pupal exuviae):
[La Levée], [Island of Cayenne], French Guiana (MNHP*); coll. J. Clastrier; 23 Oct. 1968; no. 3772-20.
The type series of Wy. forattinii (holotype, allotype no. 3772-24 and 38 paratypes (nos 3739-45, 3769, 3769-31,
3769-36, 3772-27, 3772-29, 30, 3772-31, 3772-32, 3772-33, 3772-34, 3772-35, 3772-36, 3772-37, 3772-39, 3772-
40, 3772-41, 3772-A, 3772-B (two specimens), 3772-C (three specimens), 3772-D (three specimens), 3774-31,
3848-26, 3850, 3850-44, 3850-45, 3850-46, 3850-47, 3850-48, 3851, 3851-32, 3851-33, 3873-36, 3873-37), provi-
sionally deposited in the personal collection of J. Clastrier (Clastrier 1974: 162), were found in the MNHP during
this study (microscope slides only).

53. Wyeomyia pseudorobusta Pajot & Fauran, 1975: 125 (M, P). Holotype M (with associated pupal exuviae): [Sta-
tion expérimentale de l’Institut Pasteur de la Guyane], [Inini River], French Guiana (IRD); coll. F.X. Pajot; 1973;
no. 73/378-1.
Despite all of our efforts, the holotype of Wy. pseudorobusta, provisionally deposited in the IPG (Pajot & Fauran
1975: 129), was not found. Because the holotype of Wy. ininicola, described one year earlier by the same authors,
was found in the IRD, it is likely that the holotype of Wy. pseudorobusta is also deposited there.

54. Wyeomyia nigricephala Clastrier & Claustre, 1978a: 543 (M). Holotype M: Forêt du Gallion, French Guiana
(MNHP*); coll. J. Claustre; 3 Sept. 1977.
The holotype of Wy. nigricephala, originally deposited in the MNHP (Clastrier & Claustre 1978a: 546), was
found there during this study (microscope slide only).

55. Culex insigniforceps Clastrier & Claustre, 1978b: 359 (M). Holotype M: Forêt du Gallion, French Guiana
(MNHP); coll. J. Claustre; 3 Sept. 1977.
Despite all of our efforts, the holotype of Cx. insigniforceps, originally deposited in the MNHP (Clastrier &
Claustre 1978b: 361), was not found there. We consider that this specimen is probably misplaced in the MNHP.

Type localities of mosquitoes originally described from French Guiana. Type localities are listed alphabetically
and directly followed by species described from the given locality. Geographical coordinates are provided in deci-
mal degrees using the World Geodetic System 84, and their geographic positions are shown in Fig. 2. Additional
information is provided about the nature, geographic delimitations and orthographic variations of localities.

FIGURE 2. Type localities of mosquito species originally described from French Guiana (green area). The size of the circle

Saut Canori, Approuague River. 33. An. canorii.
Geographical coordinates: 3.617323°, -52.665754°. Forested area located on the east side of the Approuague
River at the Grand Kanori (Canori, orth. var.) rapids in the former municipality of Haut-Approuague.

Station expérimentale de l’Institut Pasteur de la Guyane, Inini River. 51. Wy. ininicola, 53. Wy. pseudoro-
busta.
Geographical coordinates: 3.643906°, -53.976105 °. Area defined by the former experimental station of the
Pasteur Institute of French Guiana located on the south side of the Inini River about 4.5 km upstream of its mouth.

Tonnégrande, Tonnegrande River. 50. Wy. trifurcata.

Geographical coordinates: 4.830777°, -52.443161°. Forested area defined by the surroundings of the village of
Tonnegrande (Tonnégrande, orth. var.) located on the north side of the Tonnegrande River. In accordance with the
notes of J. Clastrier published in Heinemann & Belkin (1978: 436).

Unspecified localities in French Guiana: 14. Cx. aurilatus, 20. Cx. radiatus and 26. Cx. portesi.
Senevet & Abonnenc (1939a, 1941) mentioned several localities in the original descriptions of Cx. aurilatus, Cx.
radiatus and Cx. portesi but even though their holotypes are clearly identified, their specific localities in French
Guiana are not provided.

Discussion

Our investigation led to the discovery in the IPP of misplaced type material for five species, namely An. canorii, Cx.
cauchensis, Cx. cavernicolus, Cx. cayennensis and Cx. equinoxialis, that were not seen by Harrison (1973) or Rod-
hain & Boutonnier (1985) and were considered as non-extant by Pecor et al. (1992). We also confirmed deposition
in the MNHP of 19 type series, including those of Senevet (1937), Senevet & Abonnenc (1939a, 1939b), Senevet
et al. 1942, Senevet & Abonnenc (1946), Floch & Abonnenc (1946a), Floch & Fauran (1954, 1955) and Fauran
(1961). The location of a part of the type material of Clastrier (1970a, 1970b, 1970c, 1971, 1973, 1974), Fauran &
Pajot (1974), Pajot & Fauran (1975) and Clastrier & Claustre (1978a, 1978b) is specified for the first time. Finally,
this study allowed us to provide corrected information on the composition of the type series of five Culex species,
namely Cx. cauchensis, Cx. cavernicolus, Cx. equinoxialis, Cx. rabanicolus and Cx. rorotaensis, and to clarify the
type localities of most of the species described from French Guiana. Despite all of our efforts, the type material
of eight mosquito species originally described from French Guiana was not located. We consider that material as
probably misplaced in their original depositories, and we encourage further investigation. In order to ensure a better
long-term management and to facilitate future taxonomic work, we believe that mosquito type material from French
Guiana deposited in French institutions should all be gathered into the MNHP.
