Madhya Pradesh stands second and Fifth in terms of total geographical area and population, respectively.

For the e ective administration of Madhya Pradesh, the state has been divided into many divisions. These
divisions are further divided into districts. The number of divisions and districts changes from time to time
based on the need for administration. Currently, there are ten divisions and 53 Madhya Pradesh districts.

Divisions and districts of Madhya Pradesh are an important part of understanding the polity and
administration of Madhya Pradesh.

Division of MP

◦ Madhya Pradesh has ten divisions at present.


◦ After the formation of Madhya Pradesh, there were eight divisions of MP.
◦ The largest division of MP in terms of area is the Jabalpur division.
◦ The smallest division of MP in terms of area is the Chambal division.
◦ The largest division of MP in terms of population is the Indore Division.
◦ The smallest division of MP in terms of population is the Shahdol Division.
◦ In 2008, Chhindwara was proposed to be the eleventh division of MP. However, it is yet to be set
up.

Jabalpur Division of MP

◦ It has eight districts—namely Jabalpur, Balaghat, Chhindwara, Katni, Mandla, Narsinghpur, Seoni,
and Dindori.
◦ Jabalpur is the largest division of MP in terms of area.
◦ Dindori became part of the Jabalpur division in 2012.
◦ The Jabalpur Division was rst constituted by the British Empire in 1861 as the Jabalpur Division of
the Central Provinces of India.

Indore Division of MP

Chambal Division of MP

◦ The Chambal division is located in the Central-Indian Plateau and the northern part of Madhya
Pradesh.
◦ It has three districts- namely Morena, Bhind, and Sheopur.
◦ The Chambal division is the smallest division of MP in terms of area.
◦ The headquarters of the Chambal division is in Morena.

Narmadapuram Division of MP

◦ The headquarters of this division is in Hoshangabad.


◦ It was established on 27th August 2008.
◦ The name of this division was changed to Narmadapuram from the Hoshangabad division on 28th
August 2008.
◦ It comprised three districts, namely Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad), Harda, and Betul.
◦ The Narmadapuram division is further divided into 25 Tehsils & 20 Janpad Panchayats.
◦ The Narmadapuram division has two parliamentary constituencies.

◦ Shahdol division came into existence on 14th June 2008.


◦ It comprised three districts, namely Shahdol, Anuppur, and Umariya.

◦ The number of Madhya Pradesh districts stands at 53 after the announcement of the formation of
the new district Mauganj.
◦ These 53 districts are grouped into ten divisions for e cient and e ective administration.
◦ These 53 districts are further subdivided into 428 tehsils.
◦ The largest Madhya Pradesh district in terms of population is the Indore district.
◦ The largest Madhya Pradesh district in terms of area is Chhindwara district.
◦ The smallest Madhya Pradesh district in terms of population and area is Niwari district.
◦ After the formation of Madhya Pradesh on 1st November 1956, MP had 43 districts.
◦ Madhya Pradesh created two more districts, Bhopal and Rajnanadgaon, in 1972. The number of
districts increases to 45.
◦ On 25th May 1998, 8 more districts came into existence on the recommendation of the B.R. Dave
District Reorganization Commission (1983).
◦ On 6th July 1998, 8 new districts were carved out from existing districts on the recommendation of
the Singh Dev Committee (1998).
◦ During the division of Madhya Pradesh, the state had 61 districts.
◦ After the division of Madhya Pradesh, the state is left with 45 districts.
◦ In 2003, three more districts were added in Madhya Pradesh—namely Ashoknagar from Guna,
Burhanpur from Khandwa, and Anuppur from Shahdol.
◦ In 2008, two more districts were added and the number of Madhya Pradesh districts rose to 50.
Alirajpur and Singhrauli were carved out from the existing districts of Alirajpur and Sidhi,
respectively.
◦ On 16th August 2013, Agar Malwa district was established from the Shajapur district.
◦ On 1st October 2018, Niwari district was carved out from the Tikamgarh district.
◦ In March 2023, Mauganj was announced to be the 53rd district of Madhya Pradesh. It was
separated from the Rewa district.
◦ Madhya Pradesh Cabinet announced to create of 3 new Madhya Pradesh districts in 2020. The
names of the proposed districts are- Nagda, Maihar, and Chachauda. However, an o cial
declaration has yet to be made.
