Introduction:

India is one of the mostly preferred destinations for international tourists.

Tourism is a very promising industry in India. India is a country with a large number of tourist
spots and attractive features. India is a country known for its culture, heritage, history and natural
resources. All the states and union territories have a good number of locations catering to the
domestic and international tourists.

State Profile: location, Capital City, Population, languages.

Madhya Pradesh is a state present in central India. The state covers an area of 308,252 km2 with
72,697,565 inhabitants. The state is bordered by the states of Uttar Pradesh to the northeast,
Chhattisgarh to the southeast, Maharashtra to the south, Gujarat to the west, and Rajasthan to the
northwest. The capital of the state is Bhopal and the largest city is Indore. The official language
of the state is Hindi. The other languages that are spoken here are Urdu and Marathi. The state
has the quality of life in the county with excellent physical infrastructure and it has 64.7%
literacy level.

Physiography

The geography of Madhya Pradesh can be divided into the following regions- Malwa, Nimar,
Bundelkhand, Chambal, Baghelkhand, Mahakoshal and the central Vindhya and Satpura region.
All these regions show distinct linguistic, cultural and geographical patterns. Malwa is a plateau
region in the northwest area to the north of the Vindhya Range. Indore is the major city in this
region while Ujjain is an important historical town of Malwa region.

Climate

Madhya Pradesh enjoys a tropical climate. The summers are hot and humid and the winters are
extremely pleasant. In fact the best time to visit Madhya Pradesh is between the months of
November and February. The mercury shows a steady rise from the month of March with the
mean maximum temperature hovering somewhere between 40-42.5 degree Celsius. May is
possibly the hottest month. The moisture-laden clouds bring some rain and relief in June though.

Short history

Madhya Pradesh, as a state came into being way back in 1956. Madhya Pradesh, in its present
state, with a new state of Chattisgarh carved out of it, came into existence in the year 2000.
Madhya Pradesh, as is understandable from its name itself, enjoys a central location.

State is Known or famous for what?

Punjab is famous for its Arts & Crafts, Recipes, Dances, wildlife sanctuary, and historical places.

Accessibility – Road, Railways, Airways, Sea routes

Madhya Pradesh, being the one of the most important cites of India, is well connected to most of
the other Cities of the Country, by highways, railways, airways.

The major cities of Madhya Pradesh like Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur have
airports. The Bhopal Airport is situated about 12 km away from Old Bhopal.

The major railway junction of Madhya Pradesh is in the state capital of Bhopal. The railway
network here is well connected to major cities of India.

Road transportation in Madhya Pradesh is quite exhaustive. There are state run buses to
Maheshwar, Omkareshwar, Gwalior and Bhopal while interstate buses ply to and from
Ahmedabad, Aurangabad and Mumbai. Buses are the convenient and cheapest mode of transport
in the city.

Time Zone, Currency and No Of Districts

Throughout the India, the time zone is same of all the States i.e. Indian standard Time +5:30

The Indian rupee is the official currency of the Republic of India. The issuance of the currency is
controlled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The new Indian rupee symbol INR is derived
from the Devanagari. The first series of coins with this new rupee symbol was launched on 8
July 2011.

The modern rupee is subdivided into 100 paise though this division is now theoretical; as of 30
June 2011, coin denominations of less than 50 paise ceased to be legal tender. Bank notes are
available in nominal values of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 2000 rupees. Coins of the rupee are
available in 1, 2, 5 and 10. Paise coins of the rupee have nominal values of 50, and lower
denominations have been officially withdrawn.

The state is divided in to 50 districts. They are, Alirajpur, Anuppur, Ashoknagar, Balaghat,
Barwani, Betul, Bhind, Bhopal, Burhanpur, Chhatarpur, Chhindwara, Damoh, Datia, Dewas,
Dhar, Dindori, Guna, Gwalior, Harda, Hoshangabad, Indore, Jabalpur, Jhabua, Katni, Khandwa ,
Khargone, Mandla, Mandsaur, Morena, Narsinghpur, Neemuch, Panna, Raisen, Rajgarh, Ratlam,
Rewa, Sagar, Satna, Sehore, Seoni, Singrauli, Shahdol, Shajapur, Sheopur, Shivpuri, Sidhi,
Tikamgarh, Ujjain, Umaria and Vidisha.

Historical Monuments / Architecturally Significant Bulding / Mansions

Bharat Bhavan, Jahangir Mahal and Jahaz Mahal are the historical monuments of the state.

 The Bharat Bhavan is a unique cultural complex opened in Bhopal. On February 1982.
Built and designed by the well-known architecture Charles Correa, the complex is set in a
number of the number of low building set around the banks of the lake.

 The Jahangir Mahal was built by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo in the 17th century. Its strong
lines are counterbalanced by delicate chhatris and trellis work, the whole conveying an
effect of extraordinary richness.

 The Jahaz Mahal was constructed by Ghiyath Shah. This beautiful and exclusive piece
of architecture was constructed on a narrow strip of land located in between two water
tanks. The rooftop terrace of this ancient monument is decorated with domed pavilions.

Hill Stations

Madhya Pradesh is called as the ‘heart of India’. The most famous hill station of Madhya
Pradesh is Panchmarhi.

Panchmarhi situated on a large plateau ringed by hills on the evergreen central Satpura ranges,
is known as the Queen of Satpura for its spectacular beauty. The hill station at a height 3550 ft.
and it is located in Hoshangabad district, Madhya Pradesh. The place is surrounded by low lying
rugged hills, ravines, beautiful forests, 12 breathtaking waterfalls, serene pools and quiet glades.

Zoo / Parks / Jungles / National Parks / Sanctuaries

The most famous national parks of Madhya Pradesh are Kanha National Park, Bandharvgarh
National Park, Madhav National Park, Panna National Park, Satpura National Park, Van
Vihar National Park, Fossil National Park and Pench National Park.

 The Kanha National park is one of the many fascinating natural destinations of Madhya
Pradesh. The picturesque Park area, its innumerable wildlife and wonderful flora make it
a favourite destination of the nature lovers.
 Bandharvgarh National Park is located in Shahdol and Jabalpur distrits and covers an
area up to 437 km and was established in the year 1968. The nearby town from this park
is Umaria and is 35 km away from this park. This park consists of tiger, panther, leopard,
gaur, chausingha, nilgai, chinkara, sloth bear, bear, wild boar, and numerous varieties of
birds.
 Madhav National Park was established in the year 1959 and covers an area up to 337
square km and is located in the district of Shivpuri. The park consists of tiger, panther,
leopard, spotted deer, black buck, sambar, hyena, chausingha, langur, nilai, crocodile and
python.
 Panna National Park covers an area of 543 square km and is located I the districts of
Panna and Chhatarpur and was established in the year 1981. The creatures of this park are
leopard, panther, tiger, chinkara, sloth bear, wolf, wild pig, nilgai, gharial ,mugger,
crocodile, and peafowl.

 Satpura National Park is situated in the districts of Hoshangabad and covers an area of
502 square km. This park is nearer to the Bhopal airport and is at a distance of 210 km.
The living creatures of this park are leopard, tiger, barking deer, Sambar, nilgai and
bison. Hornbill and peafowl are the common birds. Fauna of this park includes leopard,
tiger, barking deer, Sambar, nilgai and bison. Hornbill and peafowl are the most seen
birds in this park.
 Van Vihar National Park covers an area up to 4.45 square km and was established in
the year 1979. The capital state of Madhya Pradesh is only 3 km away from this park.
The fauna living in this park are leopard, tiger, ratal, bear, Sambhar, black buck etc.
 Fossil National Park is located at Mandala and covers an area of .27 square km and was
established in the year 1983.
 Pench National Park covers an area of 293 square km and is located in the district Seoni
and was established in the year 1979. The fauna living in this park are tiger, leopard,
sloth bear, sambar, gaur, chital, barking deer four horned antelope wild dog and wild
boar.

Palaces / Forts / Museums / Art galleries:

The most famous ports and palaces of Madhya Pradesh are Asharfi Mahal, Deogarh Fort

 Asharfi Mahal is mainly used for Islamic teaching and is constructed by Mohmmad
Shah Khilji.
 Deogarh Fort is a God’s fort and is situated over the Betwa River’s bank. The entrance
of this fort is a combination of the outer wall’s gateway. This temple has many ancient
writings that portray about the Malwa’s Viceroy Govinda and Great Kumaragupta’s
brother. The images of this fort would be carved using grey or red sandstones and
granites.

Hindola Mahal, Jahaz Mahal and Jai Vilas Palace are other palace and Mahal present in this
state.

Tourists Spots

The most frequently visited place of Madhya Pradesh are Khajuraho, Pana, Bandhavgarh,
Kanha National Park, Bhopal, Gwalior, Ujjain, Indore, Orchha, Sanchi, Panchmari,
Mandu and Jabalpur. Ujjain and Omkareshwar are the two religious significance locations
of Madhya Pradesh.

Khajuraho has many exquisite Hindu and Jain temples and are highly corporeal.

Gwalior is considered to be a sensitive town and is very attractive.

Orchha is located at a distance of 16 km from Jhansi and is most famous for its Bundela
paintings which look very attractive.

Pilgrims / Temples / Mosques / Churches / Jains

The most significant pilgrims are Bhojpur, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar and Orchha.

 Bhojpur is considered to be one of the most famous cultural cities of Madhya Pradesh
and is established by Raja Bhoj and hence named after the Raja.Most amazing cyclopean
dama and Shiva temple are the most famous and attractive places of Bhojpur.
 Maheswar is one among the most famous historic temples. It is situated on the banks of
the river Narmada. This was named Maheswar after the King Mahishmati. The meaning
of this temple signifies the Lord Mahesh. This is a temple city which encompasses many
other temples which has a striking appearance.
 Omkareshwar is one of the most famed and sacred places. It has a similar appearance of
the sacred symbol of Hindus called as ‘Om’ and hence got the name Omkareshwar. The
most famous rivers Kaveri and Narmade meets in this place and the people gather here to
worship the beautiful Jyotirlinga.
 Orchha temple was built around 16th to 17th centuries and was established by the
emperor by name Bundela Rajput. There exist many memorials and shrines around this
temple that reflects an eternal beauty.

Dance festivals / Folk dance / Music festivals / Folk music

The most famous dances of the state are Karma Dance, Muria Dance and Kaksar Dance.
Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Kathak are also the famous dances of Madhya Pradesh.

Har Endanna and Hulki are the dances performed by the tribe’s people.

 Karma Dance is the major dance for the people of Gond and Oraon tribe who reside in
the north western parts of Madhya Pradesh. Both men and women perform this dance and
is generally performed during the beginning and end of the rainy seasons. This dance also
symbolizes the beginning of spring season and is performed as a welcome symbol for the
season.
 Muria Dance is performed by the tribes of Madhya Pradesh and is a folk dance that
symbolizes the cultures and traditions of the tribe peoples.
 Har Endanna is a dance that is performed only during the marriage ceremonies.
 Kaksar Dance is performed by the Abujmaria tribes of Bastar. This dance is performed to
please the god and to get the blessings for a good harvest. Both men and women perform
this dance.

University, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Madhya Pradesh Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi
Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) and many more

Food Habits

Wheat, jowar and maize are the grains that are included in every meals of people.

An essential traditional food of the people is called as ‘bafla’ and is most popular. This is nothing
but the cakes made up of wheat, dipped in ghee.

Madhya Pradesh peoples have a strong desire towards sweets and desserts and may be observed
in their eating habits. Some of the most popular sweets of Madhya Pradesh are Jalebi, Kusli and
Cashew Burfi.

Gwalior and Indore cities are abundant with milk and dairy products and are the most common
intake in this city.

Piquant delicacies like rogan josh, korma, keema, biryani pilaf and kababs (shami and seekh) are
very popular among the people’s of Madhya Pradesh .

Popular drinks and beverages includes lassi (buttermilk), sugarcane juice, sulfi (liquor distilled
from the flowers of mahua tree) and date palm.

Safety and precautions

There are many important features of vacation. It is not an option but a compulsory measure that
has to be taken while travelling anywhere. General safety and precautions are,

 First aid tool kid is the most important one that everyone has to carry while travelling.
 Travelling at night is unsafe.
 Keep a photocopy of your passport and all other important documents in a safe place.
 Don't share taxis with strangers.
 Make a note of emergency exits, stairwells, fire escapes and emergency plans at
hotels.
 And always have local police and ambulance number to make emergency call.

Madhya Pradesh has plenty of such tourist locations. Each location speaks in volume almost its
uniqueness. The pride of India lies in every tourist spot.
