SUMMARY

What is a summary?
A summary is writing down the main ideas of
a piece(article, story, song)
We basically want you to write down the MAIN
facts.
We want the skeleton of the text.
How do I create a summary?
Your summary should be in ONE single
paragraph.
You must adhere to the word count! YES, we
do count the words…
The word count should be at the bottom of
the paragraph in brackets.
You should have 7 facts.
The other 3 marks will be for language usage,
word choice, cohesion and number of words.
How do I create a summary?
Step 1: Read the text carefully.
Step 2: Read the question carefully.
Step 3:Read the text again, this time you
underline the facts you see that are relevant.
Step 4: Write down the facts IN YOUR OWN
WORDS in numerical order. Leave out all
adjectives, adverbs and emotive words.
Remember, we only want the skeleton facts!
Step 5: Count your words.
How do I create a summary?
Step 6: If you exceed the word count, edit
your facts. Make sure that you are not
mentioning unnecessary facts.
Step 7: Rewrite your facts in one fluent
paragraph. Remember your word count at the
end!
