Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: understand the relevance of modulation process and the impact of noise in a
communication System.

CO2 :: study the concept of signal trans reception through amplitude modulation technique

CO3 :: extend the knowledge of modulation techniques to angle modulation scheme.

CO4 :: evaluate the performance of pulse and digital modulation techniques along with various
multiplexing methods.

CO5 :: observe the performance metrics of 5G enabled technology

CO6 :: apply various MATLAB applications using the concepts of communication systems

Unit I
Introduction to Electronic Communication : electromagnetic frequency spectrum and bandwidth,
elements of electronic communication system, analog and digital transmission, modulation and its
need, sources of noise, external and internal noise, signal to noise ratio, noise figure, frequency
division multiplexing, FDM using MATLAB
Unit II
Amplitude Modulation Systems : types of analog modulation, principles of amplitude modulation,
modulation index, AM power distribution, AM current distribution, limitations of AM, DSBSC
modulation technique, SSB modulation technique, VSB modulation technique, comparison of
AM,DSBSC,SSB,VSB, applications of AM, Implementation of Amplitude modulation using MATLAB, AM
Modulators and Demodulator circuits, AM transmitters and Receivers
Unit III
Angle Modulation : principles of angle modulation, theory of FM, spectrum analysis of FM wave,
narrowband and widwband FM, theory of phase modulation, relation between FM and PM, advantage
and disadvantage of angle modulation, comparison of AM.FM and PM, applications of FM and PM,
Implementation of FM using MATLAB, FM Modulators and demodulator circuits
Unit IV
Pulse Modulation : sampling theorem, classification of pulse modulation techniques, pulse amplitude
modulation, pulse width modulation, pulse position modulation, pulse code modulation, differential
pulse code modulation, delta modulation, adaptive delta modulation, comparison of pcm techniques,
Implementation of PCM using MATLAB
Unit V
Digital Modulation Techniques : types of digital modulation, amplitude shift keying, frequency shift
keying, phase shift keying, quarature phase shift keying, performance analysis of digital modulation,
choice of digital modulation techniques, Implementation of ASK,FSK,PSK using MATLAB
Unit VI
5G Technology : Introduction, design fundamental, massive machine-type communication, ultra-
high reliability and low latency, battery life time, throughput, mobile broad bandwidth, network
slicing, applications, challenges, myths about 5G
