What's behind the « Miel Pop's »

Today we are going to take a look at the famous Kellog's brand and more particularly at its "Miel Pop's"
cereal which is intended for children. First of all, we will study the packaging, on which we can observe
flashy colours such as orange and yellow which are meant to attract the eye of children. We see a bee
which is the mascot of this cereal. But here to really attract children we promise them "a magic spoon" in
their cereal pack.

In order to reach as many children as possible, a well-known advertisement for this cereal is broadcast on
children's television channels such as "Gulli", "Disney Chanel" and many others.

Then we looked at the list of ingredients and we can see that the first ingredient is corn flour, but the
second ingredient is sugar. It is important to know that the list of ingredients is arranged in descending

order: the more an ingredient is present in the product the higher it is placed in the list of ingredients. So
here we see that the second most present food in cereals is sugar. The third ingredient is glucose syrup
which has a high fructose content that can cause bloating and gas because it feeds the bacteria that are
naturally present in our intestines and produce gas. The fourth ingredient is corn fibre which is harmless to
health. The fifth ingredient is honey, which is only present in 2%, which is in contradiction with the name of
the cereal. The last ingredients are: salt, barley malt extract and colouring agents which are not harmful to
health.

Finally, we have looked at the nutritional information on the cereals and we can see that a 100g portion is
452 kcal which is enormous. We also notice that for this portion we have 16g of fat and 68g of
carbohydrates, of which 23g are sugar.

These enormous amounts of sugar in the morning can cause serious health problems. Indeed, eating a
breakfast with too much sugar while we are fasting causes an accumulation of sugar in the body and our
pancreas will activate itself to lower it. As a result, you may feel sluggish and your body will push you to
consume sugar again. It's a vicious and endless circle. In addition, too much sugar in the body leads to a
blood sugar spike that can lead to: weight gain, cavities, pimples, mood disorders, addiction, hormonal
imbalances and many other side effects. The most dangerous effects are: obesity, diabetes, insulin
resistance, and many heart-related diseases.

In conclusion, nowadays, junk food and obesity have become normalized and this is a real problem for
human health. This normalization of poor nutrition is due to our society which promotes junk food first of
all by attractive prices but also as our example shows us by the packaging. Companies are looking to make a
profit on their sales at the expense of our health and the health of our children.
