WEEKLY JOURNAL
Practicum Week: Week 5
Date: 29 September 2023
Title: Teacher’s communication in the classroom

1.0 Main issue

The issue I want to focus on this week is teacher’s communication while teaching in the
classroom. Communication refers to verbal communication and non-verbal communication
but this week, I want to focus on my problem with verbal communication first. Verbal
communication is very important to be mastered by the teacher because communication is a
main medium in delivery of lesson content to pupils. Nevertheless, I found that I have a
problem in verbal communication, that is in terms of intonation voice while teaching and
stuttering when giving instructions.

2.0 Analysis of the issue

The problem I face is the intonation of my voice while teaching is less diverse. The intonation
of my voice is always more or less the same (monotone) though I should have used different
intonation according to the situation, for example excited intonation of voice when telling
something amazing. Effect from the intonation of the voice that is not diverse causes pupils
to have less fun while attending class and less excited during activity.

3.0 Literature review

According to Farah and Maslida (2015), tone stress intonation or prominence words in the
parts of the teacher's instructions must be in accordance with the meaning to be delivered.
This technique emphasizes several aspects of instructional focus and the teacher's speaking
style gives correct, precise, clear, and appropriate instructions with the background and
situation at that time to convey the meaning of the teacher's instructions to pupils.

4.0 Ideas and solutions of the main issue / problem

To overcome the issue of monotone voice intonation, I need to practice communicating
using appropriate intonation according to the situation. To overcome this problem, there are
several steps that can be considered:

i. Voice Intonation Exercises: Teacher can start by doing exercises to improve the
intonation skills of the teacher's voice. Practice reading the text with different
intonation, such as short stories or news. This help the teacher to be more flexible in
changing the intonation of the voice.
ii. Match Intonation to Content: Think about the content, when the teacher talks about
something amazing or happy, try to use intonation that is fun and excited. On the
other hand, when discussing serious matters, use intonation suitable.
iii. Record Yourself: Take time to record yourself as a teacher while teaching. Then,
listen to the recording again and rate the intonation of my own voice. This can help
teacher identify areas where teacher need to improve voice intonation.
iv. Student Engagement: Engage pupils in learning with stimulating questions and
interactions. When they feel involved, the teacher it will be easier to use the
appropriate intonation for express emotions and interests.
v. Courses or Guidance: Teachers can also consider taking a course or guidance on
pronunciation and voice intonation. This can help teacher get views from experts in
this field.
vi. Advance Planning: Before giving instructions, I need to plan with be careful about
what you want to say. I also must make a note brief or communication plan to help
myself be more prepared well before speaking.

To overcome the issue of monotone voice intonation, I need to practice communicating

using appropriate intonation according to the situation. Besides teaching aids, external
reading that includes various types of voice intonation can also help teachers improve
intonation skills.

5.0 Periods to solve the main issue / problem

6.0 Follow-up Actions

Practice using different voice intonations according to the situation.

7.0 Date of the follow-up actions

8.0 The effectiveness of the solution

By overcoming the monotonous voice problem, I was able to make the lesson more
interesting and different. This can increase pupils' interest in the subject or topics taught.
The varied intonation of the voice helps in highlight important information and emphasise
concepts key. This can help pupils understand what is taught better. This action can involve
pupils in active learning with the use of appropriate voice intonation. This can have a positive
effect on their involvement in class.
9.0 Conclusion/Reflection
I am satisfied with the actions taken. But I must be consistent and learn more in
communicating as a teacher. Steps to improving voice intonation in teaching has brought
positive results. The use of more varied intonation has increased interest, understanding,
and the involvement of students in class. Teaching becomes more dynamic, fun, and gets a
more positive response. This also helps to enrich communication skills. Continuously
practicing and practicing different intonations, I can improve even more the quality of
teaching and learning in the classroom.
