REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS I
INTRODUCTION
We cannot fully appreciate the importance of the
foundation of repentance from dead works until we fully
understand the dangerous nature of the human situation.
A proper understanding of the doctrine of repentance will
result in a vibrant Christian witness that feels the urgency
for people to be saved.
Conversion is our willing response to the gospel call, in
which we sincerely repent of our sin and place our trust in
Christ for salvation i.e. both repentance and faith.
Repentance is forsaking sin.
Saving Faith is personally trusting God through Christ for
forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Biblical understanding
of repentance requires us to understand why we need to
repent and what we need to repent
I. WHY IS REPENTANCE NECESSARY? Gen 1-3
Repentance is important because man needs to be
restored to God or face eternal judgment.
A. Creation,
1. Man made in Gods image
a. Authority over all creation. Gen 1:26;
2:19
b. Men and women equal in value before
God, Gen 1:27
c. Capacity to have meaningful
relationships like the Trinitarian God
Gen 1:28; 2:18
2. Three important relationships
a. To lovingly obey God, Gen 2:16,17
b. To love each other, Gen 2:21-25
c. To care for the earth = labor/work,
Gen 2:8-9, 15
B. The Fall
1. Satan the serpent,
a. Originally an angel of God who
rebelled, Is. 14:12-21
b. Created by God therefore not His
equal, Ez. 28:11-19

2. Man disobeys God and honors Satan
a. He transferred his loyalty from God to
Satan
b. He hands over his authority of the
earth to Satan
c. Man discards the truth for the lie
3. The result of the fall, Gen 3:1-24
a. The relationships are broken
i. Man hates man Gen 3:16
ii. The earth is cursed and labor
is hard, Gen 3:17-19
iii. Man hates God by nature Gen
3:22-24
b. Humans are sinners by nature, Eph.
2:1
c. Satan controls the world, Eph. 2:2-3
d. Sin and death entered into the world,

II. WHAT IS REPENTANCE? A tale of two sinners,
Matt 26:69-27:10
A. What it is not:
1. It is not a change of personality,
2. It is not stopping to do evil
3. It is not being sorrowful for sin,
4. It is not sinless perfection, John 1:8
5. It is not performing religious works Gen 3:1-8
B. What it is:
1. It is acknowledging sin, forsaking it, and
running to God, Ps 51
2. It is bringing renewed commitment to God 2
Cor.7:8-10
3. It is evidenced by fruit/works of righteousness,
Matt.3:1-1 2; 7:15-23
C. What are dead works? Luk 18:9-14;
1. Anything we do to cover up sin ourselves
Gen 3:1-8;
2. Trusting our own righteousness, Rom. 3:20-26
3. Things that we do to gain acceptance before
God i.e. our righteousness, Titus 3:4,5;
4. Trusting in the OT sacrificial system instead of
Christ. Heb 9:11-15
