Setting Up Derived RPM on Mainline Roller Dyno’s

In the Ramp Test Screen on a Mainline Dyno, the RPM numbers referenced for the power result (Brag Screen) HP/Kw
or Hp/FtLbs, are by default set to road speed (kph) if no “Engine” RPM source is defined or connected.

When a Power result (HP) is posted on social media etc, if the operator has not setup a derived Engine RPM the
results shown will be @ KPH, indicating that the maximum power result was recorded at a specific road speed
interval.

You can setup (calibrate) Derived RPM from the Main Screen is by pressing Ctrl + S keys on the keyboard controller.
You can then define the calibration RPM and a Gear being used. You then drive the vehicle and hold under load to
the chosen calibration RPM, say 4000rpm in 4th Gear. Using the PAGE UP or DOWN keys you can control the road
speed to adjust the road speed until the engine speed is at the “Cal Rpm”, then click “Set Derived RPM”. You can use
Ctrl + PAGE UP / DOWN, or Shift + PAGE UP / DOWN for smaller road speed increments.

Dyno Software will

calculate this value
and add to the
vehicle header file

Click “Set Derived RPM”

when holding vehicle steady
under load at 4000 rpm in 4th
gear as shown in this
example.
The software then updates the current Test Header to have the calculated
KPH/RPM Ratio, which can then be used for several purposes, but mainly to be
used as the reference Engine RPM, instead of Road Speed on the Ramp Test Screen “Brag Screen” display.

Another important System option to setup is to select what Engine RPM source you want for the purpose of
calculations (Tacho Channel for Calculations). The @RPM data from the selected RPM source will be shown on the
Ramp Test power result (Brag Screen), For example the result below shows 9496 RPM. This is the RPM value at
maximum power recorded during the test.

To setup / select the RPM input / source you want to be displayed in the “Brag Screen” you need tell the Dyno
Software what RPM “input” you will be using as the RPM source for the Brag HP/KW numbers (Tacho Channel for
Calculations). To do this, on the Main Dial Screen go to: Setup – Options – Data and select derived RPM

Click Options here Set this option to Derived RPM

Once you have set these simple system Options, your RAMP TEST results screen will then look like this depending on
the what selection is ticked on for “Show Power User Units Only”

Set this option here

If you tick on “Show Power User Units only” the display at the top of the RAMP TEST screen will display Power in
metric and imperial units. (HP & KW or KW & HP). If the “Show Power User Units only” is unticked the display at the
top of the RAMP TEST screen will display Power & Derived Torque values. (HP or KW / NM or FtLbs)
