1. What is the meaning of the word Qur-an?


The Qur-an literally means reading or recitation since it is derived from the Arabic root
word “Qira-a” which itself means reading or recitation. In Islamic Jurisprudence, the
word Qur-an refers to the name of the sacred book of Allah which was revealed to the
last messenger, the Prophet Mohammad PBUH, through the Archangel Gabriel Alayhi
as-Salaam, as a guidance to shed the humankind and Jinn kind from the darkness of
Ignorance and take them to the straight path of Allah SWT.

2. Where was the Qur-an revealed first?


The Qur-an was first revealed in the Cave of Hira in Jabal An-Nour, four KM away from
Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

3. On which night was the Qur-an first revealed?


It was one of the odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadhan when the Qur-an was
revealed to the Prophet Mohammad PBUH. Majority of the Scholars agreed it was on
27th day of Ramadhan.

4. Through whom was the Qur-an revealed?


The Qur-an was revealed in a series of revelation (Motafarriqa) through Angel Gabriel
(Jibreel) Alayhis salaam. It was one of the odd nights of Ramadhan when He descended
to the Prophet and ordered him to recite.

5. To whom was the Qur-an revealed?


The Qur-an was revealed to the last Messenger of Allah, the Prophet Mohammad PBUH.
He was Mohammad Bin Abdullah Bin Abdul Muttalib of the Quraysh Tribe in Makkah.

Muslim Jurist agreed that the Prophet was at the age of 40 when the Qur-an was first

The last Surah was revealed in Madaniyyah (Madinan Revelation). But the Muslim

revealed Surah to the Prophet.
a. According to the narration of Al Bukhari it was reported by Ibn Abbas that the last
revealed verse of the Qur-an was in Surah Al Baqarah, verse 281- 282 This Surah was
revealed in Madaniyyah (Madinan Revelation).
b. Some scholars argued that the last revelation was the verse 5 of Surah Al Maidah
which was also revealed in Madaniyyah.

9. How long did the prophet Muhammad PBUH received the revelation of the Qur-an in
Makkah?
The prophet received the revelation in Makkah for 10 years.

10. How long did the prophet Muhammad PBUH received the revelation of the Qur-an in
Madinah?
The Prophet received the revelation in Madinah for 13 years.

11. How many years did it take for the complete revelation of the Qur-an?
Since the Qur-an was sent down in a series of revelation, it happened to be in 23 years of
revelation.

12. What are the other five names of the Qur-an according to the Qur-an itself?
a. Qur-an which means “Recited” as mentioned in Surah Al Waqiah (56:77).
b. Al Kitaab which means “Book” as mentioned in Surah Al Baqarah (2:2)
c. Al Furqan which means “Criterion” because it differentiates truth from false, and
lawful from unlawful.
d. Adh-Dhirk which means a “Reminder” as mentioned in Surah Al Hijr (15:9).
e. Al Huda which means “Guidance” as mentioned in Surah Al Imraan (3:4).

The first revealed verses of the Qur-an was in Surah Al ‘Alaq.
