RICH HISTORY WITH ROYAL CONNECTIONS

EARLY HISTORY
43 Air School was built for the purpose of providing an Air Observer School for the Royal Air Force/South
African Air Force during World War II. It fell under the control of 25 Group, based at Air Force Station St
George’s Park in Gqeberha.
43 Air School came into existence on 11 November 1940 when 3 Air Operations was redesignated. The
School opened on 12 January 1942 and commenced training under the command of Wing Commander
F.W.H. Hall. By the end of January, eight Northrop Nomads and twenty Oxfords were on strength, the
former being used as tow aircraft for targets and the latter fitted with turrets for air firing exercises.
The first course trained 56 Observers and these were posted in from 45 or 47 Air Schools (Oudtshoorn and
Queenstown respectively) for the gunnery phase of their course. Later Wireless Telegraphist/Air Gunners
from 64 Air School (Tempe, Bloemfontein) were also posted to 43 Air School for a six-week course.
143 Reserve Squadron was formed at 43 Air School on 21 April 1942 and was to use the Northrops as
fighters if the need arose. The Squadron’s role was later altered to that of coastal reconnaissance when
Ansons arrived, and good work was done assisting the operational units in this role.
Battles started arriving in July 1942 and there was a great deal of excitement when one of these aircraft
located what was believed to be a submarine between the Kowie and Great Fish Rivers. It turned out to be
a whale!
Ansons started arriving from October 1942 and gradually replaced the Oxfords. On 27 February 1943 an
Anson of 143 Squadron spotted a surfaced U-Boat 8 km south of the Kariega River, but could do nothing
about it as the aircraft was unarmed.
By July 1943 43 Air School had trained 524 Observers for the RAF, another 53 W/T Air Gunners for the
SAAF, and had 29 Ansons, 35 Oxfords, 23 Battle Target Tugs and 3 Battle Bombers on strength.
The Northrops had run into spares problems by the end of 1942 and were all withdrawn and concentrated
at 42 Air School ( South End, Gqeberha ). For a while 43 Air School experienced a shortage of target towing
aircraft. This resulted in the training of air gunners having to be shifted to 65 Air School (Youngsfield, Cape
Town).
In mid-1944 successful tests were carried out using an Anson (Aircraft No. 1101) fitted with Lindholme
dinghy equipment for Air Sea Rescue work, and the aircraft was placed into service.
After 25 Group closed down in 1945, 24 Group (based at Swartkop Air Station) took over control of 43 Air
School, which by that stage was operating some Ansons fitted with the Bristol B1 MkVI power operated
turret. By the end of June 1945, 43 Air School had 79 Ansons and 13 Harvards. The water supply at the
Airfield dried up at that stage, so 43 Air School moved to Grahamstown on 23 July, taking over the
buildings vacated by 44 Air School when they closed.

DID YOU
KNOW?
43 is a World Class
Flying School

43 Air School closed down on 15 September 1946, but a gunnery flight of four Ansons and a navigation
flight of 18 Ansons remained until 6 October.
Port Alfred was taken over by 7 Air Depot post war, and two large batches of Ansons were sold for scrap.
Big plans for AFS Port Alfred, including the basing of 6 and 22 Squadrons there, never materialised, and Air
Force Station Port Alfred was abandoned in March 1956 and handed over to the Public Works Department
on 4 July 1957.
It has remained a civilian airfield since with a portion being used by the Marjorie Parrish SANTA Centre. In
1989 the School was resuscitated by Mr Jim Davis, who started a civilian flying training school with the very
appropriate name 43 Air School.

• Over 2 000 navigators, bombardiers and gunners for the Allied efforts in the war were trained at 43 Air
School Port Alfred
• The apron surrounding our campus is in the shape of the British Crown like most World War II training
bases of the day
• Do visit our Air Force Memorial at the Staff Parking entrance
• THE WRIGHT PLACE has memorabilia relating to the 43 Air School history in the form of interesting
artefacts and panels
• Look out for the original White Gunner Practice Lines on some buildings near reception
• Don’t miss Fritz’s Grave, the 43 Air School’s German Shepherd Guard Dog during World War II, situated
near THE WRIGHT PLACE

SYNTHETIC TRAINING
Basic training is conducted on any of the 5 Simulators on campus in Port Alfred and 3 located at PTC Aviation. Air
Traffic Control Training is catered for on the WX360 Barlog 360 degree ATC simulator.
The theoretical knowledge instruction / ground training facilities are sufficient to allow separate courses to be offered.
43 Air School also operates a Pipistrel Virtual Reality simulator. The pilot has all of the controls needed to fly a real
airplane: joystick that controls roll and pitch, pedals that control yaw, flaps, throttle and brake levers, and elevator trim
control plate.
The controls are fully operational and are connected to sensors that read their input and transfer it to the computer.
This simulator was developed in cooperation with Pipistrel test pilots and flight instructors, and it accurately simulates
the behaviour of the real aircraft. The simulator can be used for basic flight instruction and currency training as well as
be available for individual groups if necessary.
Air-conditioned lecture halls are equipped with various training aids. Additional learning resources such as reference
books, videos and internet facility are available to cadets in the library.

AIRLINE PILOT PROFILE

CAPT. CHRISTOPHER LES POIR

AN AVIATION My journey started in 1998 when I joined the ground operations of Air Seychelles while waiting for my Pilots Training
CAREER Scholarship. The scholarship came in 2000 and I was sponsored by Air Seychelles for my training at 43 Air School. This is
where I did my commercial licence which I completed in 2001. Thereafter, I joined Air Seychelles as a First Officer on the Twin
Otter fleet.

Not only did 43 Air School deliver an Excellent Program with Highly Qualified Instructors, I also felt the essence of 43 Air
School’s culture which centres around the values of integrity, respect and safety. There were many international students at
my time of study, and I really felt welcomed. Not only did 43 Air School provide me with Exceptional Aviation Training, the range
43 AIR SCHOOL of facilities available at 43 Air School also allowed me to really enjoy my time spent learning there. In this way, 43 Air School
EXPERIENCE provided me with an inspiring, unique learning experience which allowed me to jumpstart my Aviation Career.

LEARNING My passion for flying started from the early age of six and my ultimate dream is to someday set up a flying school/club in the
TO FLY Seychelles. To support this dream, in 2010 I channelled and developed my skills in the field of Management, Marketing and
Investment by doing my masters degree in Leadership and Strategic Management.

ACHIEVEMENTS After joining Air Seychelles as a FO on the Twin Otter fleet, I progressed to become Captain on the BN2A Islander, then Captain
Twin Otter, Instructor on BN2A and then Twin Otter, FO on Shorts SD360, and then Captain and Instructor on SD3-60. In 2007, I
moved onto the jet fleet to fly the B767 as an FO. I did that until 2012 and thereafter I went to convert onto the A330 as an FO. I
spent 2015 as an FO on the A320, and in 2016 I became Captain.

Along my path of flying, I had numerous other roles such as ground school instructor for the prop fleet. I now specialize in CRM
training. Presently, I am 40 years old and I am a Type Rating Instructor with Air Seychelles on the Airbus A320. I am currently
responsible for the National Mentorship program for Pilots. This program supports aspiring future Pilots and guides them
throughout their career path. To date, over 60 Pilots have been qualified under the program.

ADVICE FOR My message to young present Pilots and aspiring ones is never to let failure define you - your only limit is your own self.

43 ALUMNI
INSTRUCTOR PROFILE

Shaun Traviss, GRII ME/IR

LEARNING I have always dreamt of becoming a pilot, so after matriculating in 2016 I joined 43 Air School in January the following year. I
TO FLY had the privilege of being trained by brilliant Flight and Ground School instructors and finished my ME/IR CPL in February 2018
and thereafter obtained a Type Rating on the Boeing 737-800 at PTC Aviation.

Becoming a Training Captain has been my ambition from the start so I completed my GRIII Flight Instructor course at PTC and
WWW.43AIRSCHOOL.COM

began my instructional journey with 43 Air School in October 2018.

ADAVANCED The following three years were the best years of my aviation career thus far thanks in part to the opportunity of being able to
AVIATION work for one of the best flight schools around. At 43 Air School I was surrounded by fantastic support staff & colleagues who

TRAINING gave me the opportunity to pass my knowledge onto future airline pilots while being able to hone my own skills. I finished my
tenure at 43 Air School as a Senior GRII ME/IR Flight Instructor in October 2021 to further my career in Europe.

The foundation laid by the 43 Air School’s ATPL Ground School course allowed me to complete my 13 EASA theoretical
conversion exams through Bristol Ground School in two sittings. I completed my practical conversion training with an Irish
flight school in 2022 and in November 2022 I was offered the position as a Ryanair Cadet flying the Boeing 737-800 NG & Max.

32 WORLD CLASS During my conversion training in Europe it was amazing to see how 43 Air School’s reputation preceded me, with the training
TRAINING I received there being recognised as world class. I am extremely proud of my association with 43 Air School and grateful to
everyone who has played a part in shaping the professional aviator that I am today. ”
