Regular and Irregular Verbs–Definition

R
An English verb can be regular or irregular. Regular verbs form their past and
past participle forms by adding –ed.

Examples are given below.

Walk – walked – walked
Dance – danced – danced
Paint – painted – painted
Work – worked – worked

Irregular verbs form their past and past participle forms in different ways.

There are mainly three types of irregular verbs.

Verbs in which all the three forms are the same (e.g. put – put – put)
Verbs in which two of the three forms are the same (e.g. sit – sat – sat)
Verbs in which all three forms are different (e.g. drink – drank – drunk)

Some verbs can be both regular and irregular. Examples are:

Burn – burnt – burnt (irregular)
burned – burned (regular)

Send – sent – sent (irregular)

sended sended (regular)

Modal Verbs–Definition

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs (also called helping verbs) like can, will, could, shall, must,
would, might, and should. After a modal verb, the root form of a verb is generally used. The
word to should not appear after a modal verb. An exception is the phrase ought to, which is
considered a modal verb.

Modal verbs add meaning to the main verb in a sentence by expressing possibility, ability,
permission, or obligation.
You MUST turn in the train on time.
Helen MIGHT be the new queen this year
The secretary CAN type the project now.

When a modal verb precedes the main verb in a sentence or clause, use the root of the verb
rather than the infinitive, which contains the word to.

Yo soy/estoy I am
Tu eres/estás You are
El/ella es/está He/she/it is
Nosotros somos/estamos We are
Vosotros sois/estáis You are
Ellos/ellas son/están They are

Se suelen utilizar contracciones de estas formas:

I am I'm
You/we/they are You/we/they're
He/she/it is He/she/it's

Su conjugación en tiempo pasado (simple past):

SIMPLE PAST DEL VERBO TO BE

El verbo "to be" se puede utilizar como un verbo ordinario y en este caso sirve para dar información sobre el sujeto:

It is cold. Hace frio (el día está frio)

 También se utiliza como verbo auxiliar para formar las formas continuas:

 Y para construir la forma pasiva:

 Otro uso del verbo "to be" es seguido de infinitivo y se utiliza para dar órdenes de una manera un tanto impersonal,
especialmente con la 3ª persona, o también para comunicar un plan:
