ow this is ironical. I have to write
in English about Hindi on the oc-
casion of Hindi Diwas. Whose
fault is it anyway? Is it the government, or
us the people, or the language itself?
Maybe, all of us. On a slightly deeper
thought, would you even count it in for a
fault? On one hand, we might see Hindi
losing its sheen but at the same time we
are compelled to contemplate the extent
to which it is true. Read on and ponder.

Frisian dialects. Both the languages flour-
ished in their early phases in the purest
forms, just like the Ganges and Danube.
What matters more is survival, the key to
which is constant change. Pick up an Eng-
lish dictionary and etymology of words is
diverse like: Latin, French, Greek, Hindi,
etc. English as a language has been quick
to adapt, adopt and change, taking words
from other languages whenever required.
On the other hand, in an attempt to retain
its sanctity and make itself exclusive,
Hindi has ended up being ex-
cluded. Words like ‘mirch
masala’ and ‘natak’ have
been incorporated by
Oxford dictionary. If
only Hindi reciprocated
the love, nothing could
have ever stolen the
spice it once carried.

his honorary professorship from

reach out to the children. We are also
trying to be involved with contempo-
rary writers and give them a chance
in the world of theatre. I have been to
India before and I feel it has a lot to
offer, in terms of talent and creativity.

A theatre actor is very different from
cinema actors. A live theatre actor has
a lot of responsibility, because here if
you make a mistake you can’t undo it.
The actors are required to create an at-
mosphere of illusionary anticipation
for the audience, who has paid their

They need to make the audience feel
that everything here is happening for
the first time and is for real even if
they know it is pure fiction.

Shakespeare is the God of English
Theatre. As a playwright, he was
much ahead of his time. His visionary
characters are universal and they
have the capacity to be timeless even
pany. I had read somewhere
that entrepreneurship means
creating something out of
nothing. I may call myself an
entrepreneur now but my main
motive was creating a drama
school for students! I always
wanted to inspire people, espe-
cially children, as I believe that
inspiration can lead to a

we still remember his plays and per-
form them.

n exam hall, for most of us, is like
a battlefield. You’ve done your
preparations (some of us, at least)
and are ready for the showdown. But no
exam hall is complete without the usual
exclamation or confidential whispers that
grip the battling warriors.
Ma’am, sheet! How can the snails be
motivated without hearing this divine ut-
terance! That zealous student who asked
for the very first supplementary sheet gets
responses ranging from a blank gaze
(translating to “kya padh kar aaya hain,
yaar?”) to regretful looks that say “I wish
I had studied as much!” Either way the
sound of this alarm is enough to wake
many from their slumber, pacing on paper
with their pens in hand.
How much time is left? Time is the
key to success. Sure, indeed. Not five
minutes into the exam and somebody is
sure to pester the invigilator with this
question. Every passing minute they are
sure to question their desk mate about the
ticking clock! This race against time gives
them frequent anxiety attacks. Too bad,
others sitting in the exam hall too have to
sail in these anxious waves.
Excuse me ma’am, I have a
doubt! Not even a single word escapes
the sharp scrutiny of their steady gaze, in-
cluding the missing full stop. And lo! the
moment they come across something
alien, something they cannot process, the
invigilator is bombarded with all kinds of
anxious questions.
OMG! I am dead: “5 minutes before
I collect the papers!” announces the
teacher. A string of gasps echo in the hall.
Many can be seen accelerating to their
maximum speed, racing through the
sheets. The unsure answer too, now in a
moment of crisis, finds its way to the an-
swer sheet (After all, what option does the
poor kid have.) Urgent prayers are offered
to the Almighty. God knows whether He
pays attention to these calls. G T

the responsibility of conducting
Joint Entrance Examination
(JEE) (Main).
Admission criteria to Under-
graduate Engineering Pro-
grammes at NITs, IITs, other
Centrally Funded Technical In-
stitutions (CFTI), Institutions
funded by participating State
Governments, and other Institu-
tions, shall include the perform-
ance of the student in Class XII
or an equivalent qualifying ex-
amination along with the Joint
Entrance Examination, JEE
(Main). The Paper-1 (B. E. /B.
Tech.) of JEE (Main) will also
be an eligibility test for the JEE
(Advanced), which the candi-
date has to take if they aspire to
take admission in the UG pro-
grams offered by the IITs.
The National Testing Agency
(NTA) will be conducting the
Joint Entrance Examination
Main (JEE Main) 2019 twice in
a year, from January 6 to Jan 20,
2019 and again from April 7 to
April 21, 2019 and will be a
Computer Based Test for Un-
dergraduate Engineering admis-
sions into NITs, IITs and CFTIs.
Registrations for NTA JEE
Main 2019 for the January exam
will be available from Septem-
ber 1 to September 30, 2018.
