DESCRIPTION

1. General System Description

The Airshow 4000 is a 4 MCU form factor LRU and is designed for hosting multiple
multimedia applications.
The Airshow 4000 outputs multimedia, text, and graphic display information for
aircraft cockpit and cabin monitors. Airshow 4000 uplinks information from the
ground-based Airshow Network Operations Center (NOC) through the aircraft’s
airborne radio-telephone or Satcom system interface, providing real time information.
To obtain this information a subscription with the NOC is required. In the cabin, real-
time flight information is obtained from the aircraft’s long range navigation and air
data systems; this information is in turn used by the Airshow 4000 to display maps
and points of interest. The pilot may activate audio briefings at any time through
aircraft discrete switches or an Airshow Flight Deck Controller (FDC). Additionally,
the cabin monitor displays the Airshow Network that shows updated information
according to predefined custom parameters.
The Airshow 4000 platform runs several applications concurrently. The following is a
list of those applications:
• Airshow

This application provides a series of high level and detailed

maps to display your current flight position.

Customized information pages which provide updates on time-

to-destination, speed, and other lines of flight data.

A Relative Location Indicator (RLI) presents the aircrafts

location relative to the two nearest cities or Points of Interest
(POI).

2. System Components

The Airshow 4000 is a server running some or all of the above applications
concurrently. The Airshow 4000 is designed to operate inside the pressure vessel
and is powered by the +28VDC Aircraft power. The Airshow 4000 runs a Microsoft
Windows® based Operating System. An internal power-storage system ensures a
graceful shutdown of all applications running on the platform. Internal cooling fans
allow for bottom to top cooling.
Constant background BIT reporting via a front accessible indicator aids in
troubleshooting efforts. Front Panel connectors allow for high-speed data loading
and on-aircraft monitoring/troubleshooting of the modem, audio, and video functions.
A. Airshow 4000

The Airshow 4000 is a computer which receives input information from the on-
board long range navigation system (LRN), from the air data system (ADS),
and from the ground-based NOC via the on-board airborne radio-telephone
system. The Airshow 4000 configuration includes:

• Airshow 4000
• Mating connectors
• Mounting tray
• Optional peripherals (available from Rockwell Collins)
• Airshow controller (FDC, P/N 922001-1, -2, -3; TTD Controller
P/N 911010-1, -2)
• Interactive controller (P/N 191002-1)

• Airshow 4000 Video Outputs

There are two separate independent video/audio outputs from the

Airshow 4000: Output 1 is dedicated to the Cabin while output 2 is
designated for either the Cockpit or Cabin Zone 2. As illustrated in the
Airshow 4000 System Block Diagram (Figure 1), several different
interfaces may be incorporated in a particular installation; each
distinctive video output type is software selectable via the configuration
editor.

Each video channel provides a software-selectable 50/75-Ω

unbalanced composite video output, a 100-Ω balanced differential
video output, or an NTSC RGB signal with CSYNC (for channel 2

only). The RGB/CSYNC output is compatible with FMS displays with

auxiliary video inputs. All video outputs are buffered and are capable of
driving coaxial lines up to 100 feet in length.

Airshow 4000 Audio Inputs/Outputs

The Airshow 4000 also supports two independent audio streams. Each
audio channel provides stereo output (or 2 independent mono outputs),
mono output, and S/PDIF Dolby Digital® 5.1 surround sound output.

Digital and Analog Inputs

The Airshow 4000 reads digital and analog signals from on-board
aircraft avionics systems, and can read from up to three 2-wire ARINC
419/429 (software configurable) high or low speed (auto-detecting)
digital data busses.

The Airshow 4000 uses the following priority protocol when reading
data on busses:

All status LEDs are located on the Front Panel:

• “POWER ON” status LED, when the Power Supply Card
provides power to Airshow 4000.
• “BITE FAILURE” status LED, when Airshow 4000 has
detected an internal failure. This helps the Mechanic to
localize the failed LRU. During the Power Up sequence,
this LED is lit until proper initialization has occurred.
b) Connectors

These connectors are located behind a front locking door and

are not accessed during normal flight operations.

• Ethernet connector (RJ-45) for access to diagnostics

using a laptop browser. Two other independent Ethernet
ports are wired onto the back ARINC connector for LAN,
Cabin Distribution Network or IFE interface and CTU or
High Speed Data interface for Proxy services.

Network Analyzer. This modem jack is also wired in
parallel onto the rear ARINC connector.
• Audio connectors (Mini-Stereo Jack type A1), for local
monitoring. This audio jack is also wired in parallel onto
the back ARINC connector and provides AUDIO OUT 1L
& 1R access. It allows the connection of Type A
Headphones with 300 Ω or greater impedance per side.
These headphones are typically without active noise
cancellation electronics.

(c) Video Connector

Video connector (BNC Female), is for local monitoring of the

cabin video. This video jack is also wired in parallel with the rear
ARINC connector and provides COMPOSITE OUT 1 access.
Monitoring of this signal should be done with an unterminated
monitoring device to avoid double loading of the signal.

DESCRIPTION

• Languages
• Audio briefings/announcements

It is also the device used to control audio briefings and cabin

announcements. If a TTD value is set through the FDC, then
when ground speed reaches 100 knots, the FDC automatically
begins to count down the time to destination and displays the
time remaining on the Info Page.

2) Time to Destination Controller (TTD)

The TTD (also known as the Digital Cockpit Controller (DCC)) performs
simular functions as the FDC and may be used in place of the FDC. It
has a different form factor and reduced display capacity.

3) Manual Cabin Mode Control Switch Formats

The Airshow 4000 uses one of two formats to select the cabin display
mode option: discrete switch or pulse mode.

a) Discrete Switch Format (Mode Control)

The discrete switch format is used when cabin mode selection is

made using a selector switch to display the various cabin
features. Typically, this occurs when a master cabin control
switch panel system is used. The discrete switch format results
in eight possible modes.

b) Pulse Mode Format

The pulse mode (momentary pushbutton) format is typically

used in multiple location applications which allow any user to
change the Airshow mode. This format allows the installer to
mount multiple switches in parallel throughout the aircraft for
selection availability.

4) Interactive Controller

The interactive controller (typically an RF mouse) allows the passenger

to navigate through the Airshow 4000 cabin main menu and to use the
interactive features.

The interactive controller is also used to configure Airshow 4000 during

installation (through a front panel USB connector or rear connector
cabin wired port). Navigation system interfaces, and Flight Phone

INSTALLATION

1. General

A successful Airshow 4000 installation begins with careful planning, including

determination of the cooling requirements and mounting location for the Airshow
4000 unit as well as consideration of required interface connections and cable
routing. This section contains information relative to the installation and wiring of the
Airshow 4000 system. Close adherence to the methods and considerations
discussed in this section is required.

2. Unpacking and Inspecting Equipment

A. Exercise extreme care when unpacking the equipment.

B. Inspect the unit for evidence of damage incurred during shipment.

16 Claims from damage during transport

a) If a claim for damage is to be made, save the shipping container

(to substantiate the claim) and file a claim with the transport
company.

b) After notifying the transport company, contact Rockwell Collins

Customer Service at (714) 734-6400 with the damaged
component's part number and serial number.

17 Pre-Delivery failure

Contact Rockwell Collins Customer Service at (714) 734-6400 with the

following information:

• Aircraft type and serial number

• Location of unit in aircraft
• Description of problem
• Efforts made to troubleshoot the problem

18 It is advisable to retain the container and packing material after all equipment has
been removed in the event that storage or reshipment should be necessary.

INSTALLATION

3. Airshow 4000 Installation

19 Mechanical Considerations

The Airshow 4000 is an ARINC 600, 4 MCU unit which slide-mounts into a
standard 4 MCU mount. The 4 MCU mount provided by Rockwell Collins has
a pre-drilled #8-32 CSK (100°) four-hole pattern and includes a provision for
installing an ARINC 600 three-insert plug mating connector. The mount and
mating connector may be supplied as a mounting kit.

NOTE: Always follow good avionics installation practices per FAA Advisory
Circulars 43.13-1B or later FAA-approved revisions of these
documents.
20 Mounting Location and Considerations

• The Airshow 4000 must be mounted in a pressurized and temperature

controlled environment.
• Avoid mounting the Airshow 4000 close to any heat sources.
• Allow adequate space for installation of cables and connectors.
• Ensure that the equipment shelf is grounded to the airframe ground.
• Allow a one-inch mandatory clearance around Airshow 4000 to
maintain the proper operating temperature.
• Ensure that all 6 #6-32 screws are installed in the ARINC 600
Connector on the Tray (P/N 925041-100 or 925041-101)

C. Installation Procedures

1) Locate a mounting location which meets the above considerations.

2) Drill four mounting holes in the rack/shelf.

3) Using approved methods, remove all paint and protective coating from
areas on the equipment shelf that will come in contact with the unit or
its mounting rack.

4) Apply alumiprep to all metal surfaces exposed by following alumiprep's

manufacturer's instructions.

5) Secure the Airshow 4000 mount with four #8-32 CSK (100°) screws.

925600
Page 402

INSTALLATION MANUAL, AIRSHOW 4000
DRAWING NO. 925600

INSTALLATION

6) Connect wires to pin contacts per manufacturer's instructions and

insert into connectors (refer to appropriate AIRSHOW SILs (see
Referenced Documents on page 1), installation diagrams, and
manufacturer's installation manuals as necessary).

7) Provide adequate strain relief and service loop for connectors.

8) Keep all grounds as short as possible (all shield grounds must be no

longer than three inches).

NOTE: Avoid running data lines next to antenna cables or high

power transmission lines.

9) Attach the Mating Connector to the tray using four floating eyelets and
two fixed screws as shown in Figure 3.

(a) Install the four floating eyelet fasteners.

(b) Push the connector upward to its highest point.

(c) Install the two fixed position screws to secure the connector.

D. Airshow 4000 Wiring

21 The wire gauge selected for the +28 VDC power supply input to the Airshow 4000 is
dependent upon the length of the cable. In order to limit the voltage drop between
the +28 VDC source and the Airshow 4000 to a maximum of +2 VDC, select a wire
gauge equal to or larger than 20 AWG.

22 In order for Rockwell Collins components to function properly, ensure that the
Airshow 4000 is well grounded to the aircraft frame.

23 The interconnect wiring gauges are specified in the wiring interconnect diagram
(Figure 16). These are the minimum gauges recommended. Shielded wiring is
required, and shield terminations are specified in the diagrams.

CAUTION: It is imperative that all designated shields and

grounds indicated on the interconnect wiring
diagram be used. External noise coupled into the
Airshow 4000 will result in a degradation of system
performance.

925600
Page 403
FEB 18/05
INSTALLATION MANUAL, AIRSHOW 4000
DRAWING NO. 925600

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Do not connect any unnecessary wiring to the

Airshow 4000 ARINC 600 three-insert connector. Any
wiring run for future use should be capped and
stowed near the ARINC 600 three-insert connector
(P1).
24 Although the Airshow 4000 nominally draws 2.5 amps, a five-amp circuit breaker is
recommended due to the startup surge current. Connect the Airshow 4000 circuit
breaker to the avionics bus only.

NOTE: The FAA requires that a dedicated power ON/OFF switch be

installed to switch power for IFE Systems including the
Airshow 4000. The ON/OFF switch should be tied to the
entertainment ON/OFF switch to remove power from the
Airshow 4000 when not in use.

25 Use coax cable to connect the Airshow 4000 to the aircraft’s video system. The
video coax should be run separately from other electrical wiring to avoid mutual
interference.

NOTE: Under proper termination and installation practices of the

Airshow 4000 system, the video coax cable runs should be
kept as short as possible. For cable lengths greater than 100
feet, the losses must be taken into account or corrected with
a compensating video distribution amplifier.

For long runs or routing of AIRSHOW video throughout the

aircraft cabin, video isolation transformers may be required
to eliminate 400 hertz power or other noise.

26 If the Airshow 4000 requires a video distribution amplifier, connect the Airshow 4000
VIDEO OUT to the input of the video amplifier Consult video amplifier manufacturer’s
instructions for detailed interconnect requirements.

27 Ethernet Wiring

NOTE: To achieve full Category 5 performance, all components

must be Category 5 compliant and terminated properly (refer
to EIA/TIA-568 TSB-36 and TSB-40 guidelines).

No more than two hops can be on any one collision domain

4. FDC Installation

A. Mechanical Considerations

The FDC is mounted by DZUS standard single width fasteners. Select a

mounting location that is within easy reach and clearly visible to the flight
crew.

B. Mounting Location

• Avoid mounting the FDC close to any heat sources.

• The FDC is intended to be mounted in a temperature-controlled and
pressurized environment.
• Allow adequate space for installation of cables and connectors.
• Avoid mounting the FDC in locations that will degrade the visibility of
the FDC front panel display due to sunlight or other light sources.

C. Environmental Considerations

The FDC is intended for installation in a temperature and pressure controlled

environment. Because the units are convection cooled (no forced-air
cooling), sufficient clearance (one-inch clearance recommended) must be
provided on the top, bottom and around the sides to permit proper heat
dissipation.

D. FDC Installation Procedures

1) Locate a mounting location that meets the above considerations with

standard single width DZUS mount.

2) Using the external interconnect wiring diagram (Figure 16), connect wires
to pin contacts per manufacturer's instructions and insert into connector.

NOTE: The FDC may require display brightness calibration to set up

dimming features. Refer to the Ground Test section of this
manual for the calibration procedure.

3) Provide adequate strain relief and service loop for connector.

4) Keep all grounds as short as possible (all shield grounds must be no

longer than three inches).

E. FDC Wiring
925600
Page 417
JAN 16/04
INSTALLATION MANUAL, AIRSHOW 4000
DRAWING NO. 925600

INSTALLATION

1) The wire gauge selected for the +28 VDC power supply input to the FDC
is dependent upon the length of the cable. In order to limit the voltage drop
between the +28 VDC source and the FDC to a maximum of +2 VDC,
select a wire gauge equal to or larger than 20 AWG.

NOTE: If larger than 20 AWG is selected, splice in 20 AWG within

six inches of the FDC connector (since 20 AWG is the
largest gauge which can be inserted into the connector
contacts).

2) In order for Rockwell Collins system components to function properly,

ensure that the FDC is well-grounded to the aircraft frame.

3) The interconnect wiring gauges are specified in the external interconnect

wiring diagram (Figure 16), These are the minimum gauges
recommended. Shielded wiring is required, and shield terminations are
specified in the diagrams.

CAUTION: It is imperative that all designated shields and

grounds indicated on the interconnect wiring
diagram be used. External noise coupled into the
FDC will result in a degradation of system
performance.
CAUTION: Do not connect any unnecessary wiring to the FDC
DB-25S connector. Any wiring run for future use
should be capped and stowed near the DB-25
connector.
4) Although the FDC nominally draws 0.25 A, a 1A circuit breaker connecting
to the avionics bus is recommended due to the startup surge current.

5. TTD Installation

A. Mechanical Considerations

The TTD is mounted by four #6-32 screws into a 1/2 ATI cutout. Select a
mounting location that is within easy reach and clearly visible to the flight
crew.
NOTE: Always follow good avionics installation practices per FAA Advisory
Circulars 43.13-1A and 43.13-2A or later FAA-approved revisions of
these documents.
B. Mounting Location

• Avoid mounting the TTD close to any heat sources.

• Allow adequate space for installation of cables and connectors.
• Avoid mounting the TTD in locations that will degrade the visibility of
the TTD front panel display due to sunlight or other light sources.
• Allow adequate free air space (one-inch clearance recommended)
around the top, bottom and sides of the TTD.

C. Environmental Considerations

The TTD is intended for installation in a temperature and pressure controlled

environment. Because the units are convection cooled (no forced-air
cooling), sufficient clearance (one-inch clearance recommended) must be
provided on the top, bottom and around the sides to permit proper heat
dissipation.

GENERAL NOTES

1. It is the responsibility of the installer to verify part numbers and data compatability
of all equipment connected to the Airshow 4000.

2. Airshow recommends the use of RG-179 (75 Ω) or RG-142 coax (50 Ω) to

connect the Airshow 4000 S/PDIF digital audio output, or the composite, Y/C, or
RGB/CSYNC video outputs to the monitor (75 Ω) inputs. 75 Ω video isolation
transformers may be required depending on installation to reduce visible 400Hz
noise.

3. If using a DADS, connect DADS 2-wire output to Airshows #2 2-wire ARINC

input. It is also necessary to connect the FMS, or INS to the Airshow’s #1 2-wire
input.

4. Additional RJ-45 interfaces may be connected to the LAN by linking additional

Ethernet 10/100Base-T Hub/ Switches.

5. Ethernet cable STP CAT 5 (such as PIC WIRE & CABLE P/N E50424) per
ARINC 646 and ARINC 664. Mating connectors and interfaces to be defined at
installation.

6. Refer to Airshow SILS for specific Radio Telephone Interconnect details.

7. For installations where Airshow 4000 is at one end of RS-485 bus, connect
jumper between G11 and H11 to provide Line-Line termination of bus. For
multidrop installations where Airshow 4000 is not at either end of a bus do not
connect jumper from G11 to H11.

8. Cockpit discrete momentary switches used to control the menu system for Radio
Telephone Uplinking. The common ground for switches must be grounded at the
Airshow 4000 side.

9. “No Smoking” and “Fasten Seatbelt” discrete inputs are active high, (+18 – 36

GROUND TEST

1. Purpose

This procedure validates the installation of the Airshow 4000 and its basic
functionality. It confirms that the Airshow 4000 can read all connected systems
correctly. A worksheet (see Table 44) is included for recording the results of the
ground test.

NOTE: The ground test procedure will vary based upon whether or not the
customer specific software has been installed on the Airshow 4000. The
procedure provided below assumes that the custom software has been
installed; however differences in the ground test procedure are noted for the
case where this has not yet been accomplished.

A. Effectivity

This procedure applies to the following Airshow 4000:

• ARINC 600 Mount AIRSHOW 4000, P/N 925000-100

This procedure also includes instructions for controlling the Airshow 4000
with a variety of controllers. These include:

• Flight Deck Controller (FDC). It includes a single-line display, scroll

knob and select switch to navigate software menus and control the
Airshow 4000.
• Digital Cockpit Controller (DCC) (also called the TTD Controller). It
provides similar access to the software menus through a toggle and
pushbutton switch.
• Flight Deck Interface Switches. This set of four switches provide
access to the on-screen flight deck menu.
• Discrete mode-select inputs. These three inputs to the Airshow 4000
provide direct selection of the cabin display mode. The installation
may implement these as a mode-select matrix.
• Pulse mode-select input. This single input provides direct selection of
the cabin display mode.

GROUND TEST

The Airshow 4000 integrates information it receives from other aircraft

systems (for example, the aircraft FMS/INS), therefore the state of those
systems affects the behavior of the Airshow 4000. The aircraft systems may
broadcast ARINC Labels with null or invalid data, especially at start up. For
example:

If the aircraft systems do not broadcast a valid LAT/LON, the aircraft symbol
will not be present on the maps.
• If no flight plan is present, or if the aircraft does not broadcast a
destination city, the destination symbol will not be present on the
maps.

Some Airshow 4000 features simply cannot be validated on the ground.

These features depend on the complete suite of ARINC data that an
aircraft in flight provides.

GROUND TEST

E. Organization of the Airshow 4000 ground test procedure (GTP)

The GTP has five sections that validate the installation of an Airshow 4000.
Perform the tests in order. Each step depends on the successful completion
of the previous steps. If the Airshow 4000 fails any test step, stop the test,
troubleshoot and correct the problem.

The test results can be recorded in the Airshow 4000 Ground Test Worksheet
(Table 44).

1. The system powers up correctly. Video output signals are present. The
mouse and external controller (if installed) control the Airshow 4000.

2. The maintenance pages demonstrate receipt of broadcast ARINC Labels

from all installed and connected data sources. Discrete inputs, if
connected, are validated.

3. Display pages demonstrate receipt of present position data from the

aircraft navigation systems and demonstrate basic Airshow functionality:

a) The aircraft symbol appears on the map.

b) Some data appears on the info display pages (what the aircraft
systems broadcast during the test affects which fields the Airshow
4000 displays on the pages).

4. The audio tests verify the audio outputs and control signals.

5. The Airshow 4000 completes a network phone call successfully and

displays appropriate network content.

NOTE: Record (photograph) the screens observed during the ground test for
later review and possible troubleshooting.

2. Power-up and External Control

This section includes test procedures for the Airshow 4000 models and several
types of external controller. Do the tests that are relevant to the installation and

7. 429 Troubleshooting Guide

A. Purpose

This section explains how to troubleshoot an installation when the Airshow

4000 is not receiving ARINC data on one or more of its inputs.

B. ARINC Port Word Status Pages

(1) From the Maintenance menu, select the FMS DATA tab and then
the ARINC Port Status link to check for the presence of words
being broadcast before removing the Airshow 4000 from the
aircraft. The Airshow 4000 responds with a display similar to
Figure 48.

Figure 47 – Port Status

(2) If the Received count is incrementing then valid data are being
received on the corresponding port. The ASPCHK Mode indicates
that the port is attempting to determine the port speed either due to
no data or an incorrect speed selection.

(3) From the Maintenance menu, select the FMS DATA tab and then
the ARINC Port <x> Data link where x is the port number (1, 2 or
3). The Airshow 4000 responds with a display similar to Figure 48.

Figure 48 – Port 1 Word Status

(4) If the Port Word Status displays at least one label and the port is
receiving data then the Airshow 4000 is reading the input correctly.
Check that the ARINC source and its subsystems are powered up
and broadcasting data.

(5) If the port is not receiving valid words and the Port Word Status
page is blank, use the following steps to troubleshoot.

C. Preparation

1. Remove power from the Airshow 4000.

2. Remove the Airshow 4000 from the tray.

3. Using a bus reader, check for the presence of ARINC 429 signals
at the pins for the port in question (refer to Table 45).

D. Bus reader detects a label.

If a signal is present, and the bus reader detects at least one label
from the, ARINC Label Expectations, check the back of the Airshow
4000 for pin damage.

E. Bus reader detects no labels

If no signal is present, check the mating connector pins (refer to

Table 45) with an oscilloscope.

1. The ARINC 429 signal waveform is a Return to Zero (RZ)

bipolar tri-state modulation. The three states are HI, NULL
and LOW. HI is 10 V above NULL, and LOW is 10 V below
NULL, as shown in Figure 49.

Figure 49 – ARINC 429 Waveform

2. If the oscilloscope does not detect a signal, check the wiring

continuity and the source of the input.

1. Airshow 200, 400, and Network Upgrade to Airshow 4000

A. Purpose

This Section discusses upgrading an existing Airshow LRU with an

Airshow 4000.

B. Applicability

This applies to Airshow 200, P/N 910020, Airshow 400, P/N 920040,or
920050, and Airshow Network, P/N 920060, or 920062.

C. Basic Description

This description simplifies exchanges and upgrades of Airshow hardware

to the Airshow 4000. This document facilitates re-pinning from the original
tray and ARINC 404A connector to the new Airshow 4000 tray and ARINC
600 connector.

D. Specific Upgrade Considerations

The plan for an upgrade from the Airshow 200, 400, or Network to the
Airshow 4000 DMU should address the following considerations:

• Installation environment
• Electrical considerations
• Mechanical considerations
• Certification.

1) Environmental Considerations

a) Operating Temperature. The Airshow 4000 operating

temperature range is -15°C to +55°C. Provide adequate
cooling (convection or forced air) for the Airshow 4000
to keep the ambient temperature below +55°C.

a) b) Operating Pressure/Altitude. The Airshow 4000 has

an operating altitude range of –15,000 ft to +15,000 ft;
therefore it must be mounted within the aircraft pressure
vessel in order to maintain system operability.

925600
Page 901

3) Mechanical Considerations

a) The Airshow 200, 400, and Network have similar external

dimensions:

AIRSHOW 4000 DMU

Length: 14.20 in., Width 4.97 in., Height 7.80 in.

b) b) The Airshow Network weighs 10.3 lbs while the

Airshow 4000 DMU weighs 10.0 lbs. The installation plan
should take this lighter weight into consideration for a
revised weight and balance of the aircraft.
