INTRODUCTION
1. GENERAL
This manual was developed in compliance with the standards set forth by the AIR TRANSPORT
ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (ATA 100, revision 27).
This manual supplies all the information required to perform the reconditioning of the equipment at 4th level
maintenance.
This manual includes no mentions of periodicity and does not cover issues which may vary depending on the
current means available to the repair facility.
2. MANUAL PRESENTATION
For page numbering, each chapter has been allocated the following sequences :
1 -- 099 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
101 -- 199 TESTING AND TROUBLE SHOOTING
201 -- 299 UNALLOCATED
301 -- 399 DISASSEMBLY
401 -- 499 CLEANING
501 -- 599 INSPECTION/CHECK
601 -- 699 REPAIR

801 -- 899 FITS AND CLEARANCES
901 -- 999 SPECIAL TOOLS, FIXTURES AND EQUIPMENT
1000 -- 1099 ILLUSTRATED PARTS CATALOG
All values are generally given in units (or multiples or sub--multiples) of the International System of Units. In a
few special cases, units more currently used have been indicated.
3. REVISIONS
When this manual is revised, detailed instructions will be provided together with the revision for the insertion or
removal of pages. Parts of the text modified, added or removed will be identified by a vertical black line in the
margin.

4. OPERATION (Figure 2)
A. Shock strut compression
When the piston tube starts to sink, the hydraulic fluid, restrained by the throttling ports of the compression
restrictor, flows from the upper chamber to the intermediate chamber. The expansion restrictor is applied
against its seat and thus rendered inoperative.
When the pressure in the intermediate chamber becomes higher than that in the lower chamber, the
separator piston is driven back by the hydraulic fluid and compresses the nitrogen in the lower chamber.
The piston tube travel stops when the lower chamber pressure equals the load applied to the wheel.
B. Shock strut expansion
When the load applied to the wheel drops, the shock strut expands under the action of the energy stored by
the nitrogen during compression. The expansion restrictor is applied against the compression restrictor.
The hydraulic fluid is then throttled through the expansion restrictor ports, thus slowing down the shock strut
expansion motion.

INSPECTION / CHECK
1. GENERAL
The checks/inspections to be performed on the main landing gear after disassembly are as follows :
-- Visual check,
-- Dimensional check,
-- Metallurgical inspection.
A. Visual check
It consists in looking for all traces of marking, binding, peening, wear, etc., as well as defects in the surface
treatments, oxidizing, corrosion, etc. The check is performed using a 5--power magnifying glass.
B. Dimensional check
This check requires the measurement of dimensions :
-- on pins using a palmer,
-- on bores using a plug gage P/N EURTTLD 12.048 -- 16.048 or equivalent.
The purpose is to compare readings with the dimensions authorized – Refer to Chapter “FITS AND
CLEARANCES”.
C. Metallurgical inspection
NOTE : Metallurgical inspection is performed when the visual check has revealed an anomaly or
to clear a doubt about the condition of a part.
CAUTION : NO CRACK IS PERMISSIBLE.
1) Identification of cracks on steel parts must be carried out by dye penetrant inspection or using a
magnetic detector per documents ASTM--E--1417 or ASTM--E--1444 at the latest revision.
2) Identification of cracks on light alloy parts must be carried out by dye penetrant inspection per document
ASTM--E--1417 at the latest revision.
NOTE : All these inspections must be performed after having stripped the paint – Refer to
Chapter “CLEANING”.

c) After applying the primer, allow to dry before applying the finish coat :
-- 4 to 72 hours at ambient temperature
or
-- drying in oven (class 7) after mandatory pre--drying of 1 hour at ambient temperature :
25 min at 176°F (80°C) or 45 min at 140°F (60°C).
4) Applying the finishing paint.
a) Mix 10 volumes of base with 10 volumes of hardener. Add 5 to 7.5 volumes of solvent to obtain the
application viscosity as follows :
-- 38 s to 43 s with AFNOR cup 2.5/68°F (20°C)
or
-- 36 s to 40 s with ISO cup 3/68°F (20°C).
WARNING : PERFORM PAINTING OPERATIONS IN WELL VENTILATED PREMISES.
PROTECT YOURSELF WITH A FILTER CARTRIDGE MASK, GOGGLES, GLOVES
AND APPROPRIATE CLOTHES. IN CASE OF CONTACT WITH THE SKIN, WASH
OFF WITH SOAP AND WATER.
IF THE PAINT COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE EYES, RINSE THOROUGHLY WITH
WATER AND CONSULT A PHYSICIAN.
b) Using a pneumatic spray gun, apply the finish coats under a pressure of 44 to 73 psi (3 to 5 bars) as
follows :
The finish is applied in two times, first a mist coat followed by a drying of 30 minutes at ambient
temperature then a cross coat or two single coats.
The thickness of the dry film must be of 1.968 to 2.952 micro inches (50 to 75 microns).
c) After applying the finishing, allow to dry before applying the finish coat :
-- 8 days at ambient temperature
or
-- drying in oven (class 7) after mandatory pre--drying of 2 hours at ambient temperature :
-- 15 hours minimum at 122°F (50°C)
or
-- 6 hours minimum at 167°F (75°C)

E. Changing bushings
NOTE : Steel and bronze bushings are installed by thermal difference. If it proves necessary to
increase the temperature of the supporting part, DO NOT EXCEED 212°F (100°C). This
value is applicable to all grades of steel whether treated or not, and to aluminum alloys.
CAUTION : EXCEEDING 230°F (110°C) ON LIGHT ALLOY PARTS TREATED BY SHOT--PEENING
WITH BRIGHT--SHOT WILL DAMAGE TREATMENT.
1) On the supporting part.
CAUTION : DO NOT REWORK BEYOND MAX--MIN DIMENSIONS.
a) After removing the bushings and if necessary, rework the bores and mating surfaces until all defects
have disappeared.
b) Rework the chamfers and radiuses.
c) On reworked surfaces, perform a surface treatment if called for.
d) Protect surfaces laid bare.
2) Preparation of the new bushings (blanks).
a) Rework the bushings according to dimensions recorded, in order to achieve the fit required.
b) Rework the chamfers and radiuses.
c) Apply protection to reworked surfaces per instructions.
3) Install the bushings.
CAUTION : AFTER FITTING THE BUSHINGS, CHECK AFTER RETURN TO AMBIENT
TEMPERATURE THAT THE BUSHING FLANGE SITS PROPERLY ON THE
SUPPORTING PART. MAKE SURE THAT A 0.0015 IN (0.04 MM) SHIM CANNOT BE
INSERTED IN THE MATING SURFACE BETWEEN THE BUSHING FLANGE AND THE
SUPPORTING PART.
4) Rebore the bushings in line.
5) Rework the faces of the flanges.
6) Rework the chamfers and radiuses.
F. Repairing chrome--plated parts
1) Three types of chrome--plating may be required :
