DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General

A. The uni-directional single-pole inertia-operated switch, intended for horizontal mounting, operates at a
pre-set deceleration when applied as a forward component. It is designed to operate fire protection
equipment or other electrically-operated aids to survival under emergency landing or crash conditions.
2. Description (Refer to Figure 1)

A. The components of the inertia switch include a light alloy body and sleeve assembly which contains a trip
weight that can move in the sleeve. The trip weight contains a bias weight which is kept in position with a
circlip. The body and sleeve assembly and associated mechanism is surrounded by a transparent
cylindrical cover. At one end of the unit is a light alloy mounting plate and at the other a moulded
contact-leaf and reset-plunger terminal block assembly and terminal block cover.
B. The trip weight is held in the bore by a bow contact. The bow contact is bent and held in position against
the trip weight and supported at each end with a leaf spring, a slotted pad and a retaining screw on either
side of the body and sleeve assembly.
C. The contact-leaf and reset-plunger terminal block assembly has a reset mechanism which includes a
reset plunger and a spring. Two cable entry sleeves are provided to hold the (aircraft) electrical cables
when they are connected to the terminal screws. Two leaf contacts are attached to the lower end of the
terminals with a round nut and locking plate.
D. All the switches are of similar construction. The type 18C(2) and 29C(2) differ from the 8C(2) and 10C(2)
in that the moulded terminal block is black and has a hole at its centre to give access to the reset plunger.
On types 8C(2) and 10C(2) it is necessary to remove the terminal cover to reset the unit after operation.
Type 18C(2) differs from type 29C(2) in that the mounting base fixing holes are located in different
positions.
3. Operation (Refer to Figure 1)

A. Movement of the trip piston can occur only when the unit is subjected to its operating 'g' level. When this
occurs, the trip piston pushes against the bow contact which bends in the opposite bend direction and
touches the leaf contacts to make an electrical circuit. The 'g' setting is determined by the degree of
compression applied to the bow contact, and this can be varied by adjustment of the position of the leaf
spring pads.
B. The unit stays in the operated condition and the position of the bow contact can be verified visually
through the transparent cover.
C. To reset the unit, the spring-loaded reset plunger is pushed which returns the trip piston and bow contact
to their original positions and breaks the electrical circuit.

Calibrating Turntable ( to
T1485 produce up to 11 g at 245 rpm) Test unit

B. Materials

(1) These materials are necessary:

NOTE: Alternative equivalents are permitted.

Ref. Item Material

1 Distilled water

2. Test Conditions

A. Do the tests at an ambient temperature between 15 and 20 oC.

3. Procedure

A. Operating Test

(1) Install the unit as assembled on a suitable fixture on the Calibrating Turntable T1485 with the
mounting plate at 115,9 mm (4.563 in) from the centre of the Calibrating Turntable T1485 (to give a
nominal 152,4 mm (6 in) radius at the centre line of the trip weight).

(2) Secure a counter balance of the same weight as the assembled unit to the Calibrating Turntable
T1485 at the same distance from the centre and diametrically opposite to the unit assembly under
test.

(3) Increase the Calibrating Turntable speed slowly and check that the unit operates within these rpm
limits:

(a) Type 8C(2) - 129 and 136 rpm (3 g + 0.15 g)

(b) Type 10C(2) - 160 and 165 rpm (4.5 g + 0.15 g)

(c) Type 18C(2) - 89 and 98 rpm (1.5 g + 0.15 g)

(d) Type 29C(2) - 183 and 192 rpm (6 g + 0.15 g)

(4) If operation occurs outside these limits, re-calibrate the unit: refer to para C.

26-05-01 Page 101

Oct 31/07
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
PART NUMBER 53433 SERIES
B. Unit Calibration
(1) If the unit operates at a speed less than the lower rpm limit, loosen the screws (1-340), move the
leaf spring pads (1-360) towards the body (1-420) to increase the gap between their ends and the
adaptor plate and re-tighten the screws.
(2) Use a feeler gauge when reducing or increasing the gaps and ensure that they are equal to within +
0,127 mm (+ 0.005 in) during every test. Any difference between the gaps causes distortion of the
contact bow and can give an inconsistent operation.
(3) If the unit operates at a speed more than the upper rpm limit, loosen the screws (1-340), move the
spring pads (25) away from the body (1-420) to decrease the gap between their ends and the
adaptor plate and re-tighten the screws.
(4) Repeat paras 1 to 3 as applicable until the unit operates within the specified rpm limits.
(5) After calibration, tighten the screws (1-340) and bend one tab of each of the tab washers (1-350)
over the screw (1-340) to lock the position.
(6) Repeat the operating test and make sure that the unit operates within the specified limits.
(7) Complete the final assembly of the unit: refer to ASSEMBLY.
C. Millivolt Drop Test
(1) With the unit fully assembled, except for the terminal cover, and in the operated condition, connect
the switch terminals in series with a 28 volt circuit in which 2 amperes are flowing. The voltage drop
across the terminals must not exceed 75 millivolts.
D. Insulation Resistance Check
(1) Use a 500 volt Insulation Resistance Tester to measure the insulation resistance. With the unit in the
operated condition (bow contact against the leaf contacts), measure the insulation resistance
between each terminal screw (1-40) and the case (1-190). The insulation resistance must not be
less than 20 megohms.
(2) With the unit in the not operated condition (bow contact away from the leaf contacts), measure the
insulation resistance between each terminal screw (1-40) and the case (1-190) and between each
terminal screw. The insulation resistance must not be less than 20 megohms.
E. Leak Test
(1) Remove the terminal cover assembly (1-10), terminal cover washer (1-20) and twin cable sleeves
(1-30).
(2) Make sure that the external surfaces are clean and free from dust: refer to CLEANING.
(3) Push the reset plunger in to put the unit in the not operated condition.
(4) Submerse the unit in distilled water, Material Ref. Item 1, inside the Vacuum Chamber and reduce
the pressure in the chamber to 711 mm (28 in) of mercury (51 mm (2 in) Hg Absolute) for not less
than two minutes.
(5) Check the units for leaks visually. A steady stream of bubbles indicates a leak. Small break away
bubbles are acceptable.
(6) Vent the chamber to atmosphere and remove the unit from the water and chamber.
(7) dry the unit completely with an low pressure air hose.
(8) Install the twin cable sleeves (1-30), terminal cover washer (1-20) and terminal cover assembly
(1-10).
