1. General
A. The uni-directional single-pole inertia-operated switch, intended for horizontal mounting, operates at a
pre-set deceleration when applied as a forward component. It is designed to operate fire protection
equipment or other electrically-operated aids to survival under emergency landing or crash conditions.
2. Description (Refer to Figure 1)
A. The components of the inertia switch include a light alloy body and sleeve assembly which contains a trip
weight that can move in the sleeve. The trip weight contains a bias weight which is kept in position with a
circlip. The body and sleeve assembly and associated mechanism is surrounded by a transparent
cylindrical cover. At one end of the unit is a light alloy mounting plate and at the other a moulded
contact-leaf and reset-plunger terminal block assembly and terminal block cover.
B. The trip weight is held in the bore by a bow contact. The bow contact is bent and held in position against
the trip weight and supported at each end with a leaf spring, a slotted pad and a retaining screw on either
side of the body and sleeve assembly.
C. The contact-leaf and reset-plunger terminal block assembly has a reset mechanism which includes a
reset plunger and a spring. Two cable entry sleeves are provided to hold the (aircraft) electrical cables
when they are connected to the terminal screws. Two leaf contacts are attached to the lower end of the
terminals with a round nut and locking plate.
D. All the switches are of similar construction. The type 18C(2) and 29C(2) differ from the 8C(2) and 10C(2)
in that the moulded terminal block is black and has a hole at its centre to give access to the reset plunger.
On types 8C(2) and 10C(2) it is necessary to remove the terminal cover to reset the unit after operation.
Type 18C(2) differs from type 29C(2) in that the mounting base fixing holes are located in different
positions.
3. Operation (Refer to Figure 1)
A. Movement of the trip piston can occur only when the unit is subjected to its operating 'g' level. When this
occurs, the trip piston pushes against the bow contact which bends in the opposite bend direction and
touches the leaf contacts to make an electrical circuit. The 'g' setting is determined by the degree of
compression applied to the bow contact, and this can be varied by adjustment of the position of the leaf
spring pads.
B. The unit stays in the operated condition and the position of the bow contact can be verified visually
through the transparent cover.
C. To reset the unit, the spring-loaded reset plunger is pushed which returns the trip piston and bow contact
to their original positions and breaks the electrical circuit.

B. Materials
1 Distilled water
2. Test Conditions
3. Procedure
A. Operating Test
(1) Install the unit as assembled on a suitable fixture on the Calibrating Turntable T1485 with the
mounting plate at 115,9 mm (4.563 in) from the centre of the Calibrating Turntable T1485 (to give a
nominal 152,4 mm (6 in) radius at the centre line of the trip weight).
(2) Secure a counter balance of the same weight as the assembled unit to the Calibrating Turntable
T1485 at the same distance from the centre and diametrically opposite to the unit assembly under
test.
(3) Increase the Calibrating Turntable speed slowly and check that the unit operates within these rpm
limits:
(4) If operation occurs outside these limits, re-calibrate the unit: refer to para C.
A. Make sure that the work area tools and equipment are clean.
B. Discard parts that you must not use again. These include sealing rings and backing rings.
C. Special Tools.
(1) Special tools are not necessary.
