In some ways, the way you see can be compared to the way a camera takes a picture. The first thing that the eye needs to see, and a camera needs to take a picture, is light. Light enters the eye through a small hole called the pupil. Around the pupil is the iris s the ring that gives your eye its colour. The iris automatically opens or closes the pupil to. let in more or less light. In the same way, the hole in the camera, called the aperture, can change size automatically. Imagine if you had to close your eye every time you saw something new. A camera is like that. Unlike the eye, a camera must return to darkness right after allowing light to 10 enter. That's why it has a shutter. A camera's shutter acts like a curtain to allow light into the camera when a picture is taken In both the eye and the camera, light then passes through a lens. The lens bends the light rays so that they meet, or focus. To shift from focusing on faraway objects to objects nearby, the shape of a lens must change. 1s Your eye muscles do this work for you. Your eye muscles change the lens’ shape automatically, while a photographer must decide to change one lens for another. The light rays inside the camera focus on a chemical layer on film. The points of light change the chemical, forming a pattern. Then the film goes through the developing process. The pattern of light and darkness turns into a photograph. 20 Inside the eye, the light also forms a pattern on a light-sensitive layer. This layer, at the back of the eye, is called the retina. The cells of the retina respond to light. In contrast to a camera with film, the eye processes its images instantly. The cells of the retina send electrical impulses speeding along the optic nerve. When these impulse reach the brain, they make sense of the image. 25 The images on film and on the retina are not the same as in real life. Because of the way light rays travel, the image is upside down. To look at a photograph, you must turn it right-side up. To look at the words on this page, however, you don’t have to turn the book.
