Unit 5 – Trigonometry
Part 1 – Similar Triangles and Trigonometry of Right Triangles

1. The triangles in each pair are similar. Find the unknown side lengths. (K – 4 marks; C – 2 marks)

PQ/ST=4/x

2. Suppose youwishto find thewidthofthispond. Themeasurements are given below. How wide is the
pond? (A – 3 marks; C – 1 mark)
3. On a sunny day in Egypt, a stick is placed vertically so that it stands 2 metres tall and casts a 4
metre long shadow. At the same time, the Great Pyramid of Egypt casts a shadow 179 m long from
the edge of the pyramid which is 230m wide. What is the height of the Great Pyramid? (T – 4
marks)

4. State the trig ratios for the given triangle. Leave your answers as fractions. (C – 3
marks) sinA = sinC=

cosA= cosC=

tanA= tanC=

5. Find side x in each triangle below. (K – 4 marks)

A A

C B | C B

∠A= 180 - (∠B+∠C) | sinA= a/c

= 180 - (90 + 27) | x = sinA(c)
= 180 - 117 | x = sin27(6.2)
∠A= 63 | x = 5.9
|

sinA= a/c
x = sinA(c)
x = sin63(6.2)
x =1.04
6. Find angle x in each triangle below. (K – 4 marks)
7. In ΔXYZ, ∠X = 90°, ∠Y = 15° and z = 73.6 cm. Solve the triangle. Include a properly
labelled diagram. (K – 5 marks; C – 2 marks)
∠Z= 180 - (∠X +∠Y)
Z =180 - (90 + 15)
75 = 180 - 105
∠Z= 75°
76.2c 15 tanY= y/z
19.2
y=tanY(z)
=tan15(73.6)
X Y y = 19. 172cm

y=a z=b x=c

c^2= a^2 + b^2

z^2= x^2 + y^2

Therefore, x= 76.1cm y=19.2cm z= 73.6cm and

∠X=90 ∠Y=15 ∠Z= 15

8. In ΔABC, ∠B = 90°, b = 40.3cm and a = 29.0cm. Solve the triangle. Include a properly
labelled diagram. (K – 5 marks; C – 2 marks)
9. Ms. Irons places a 10 m ladder against the wall with a 70° angle at the foot of the ladder. How
high up doestheladder reach? Include a properly labelled diagram. (A – 2 marks; C – 1 mark)
10. A tree is 8.5 m tall and casts a shadow that is 6 m long. At what angle are the sun’s rays to
the
ground? Include a labelled diagram. (A – 3 marks; C – 1 mark)

11. Wiley Coyote is about to climb a cliff to catch the Road Runner. Before climbing the cliff, he goes
back 100m and notes that the angle to the top of the cliff is 80°. How high is the cliff? Include a
labelled diagram. (A – 2 marks; C – 1 mark)

12. A plane takes off and needs to climb above the mountains. If the mountains are 4.5 km from
the runway and are 2000m tall, what is the angle of ascent needed for the airplane to clear the
mountains? Include a properly labelled diagram. (A – 3 marks; C – 1 mark)
13. At Exhausted Auto Repair, the ramp that lets the mechanics work under the car on a platform
must be 2 m off the ground. The angle of the ramp cannot be more than 20°. What is the
shortest ramp that can be used? Include a properly labelled diagram. (T – 3 marks; C –
1mark)
B

20 2m

A C
b
the length of the shortest ramp = b
∠B= 180 - ( ∠A+∠C)
= 180 - (20+90)
= 180 -110
∠B =70

b=tan70(2)
b= 5.4949548
Therefore, the shortest ramp that can be used is 5.5m.

14. A video camera is mounted on the top of a 120 m tall building. When it tilts down 36° fromthe
horizontal, it views the base of another building. When it tilts up 47°fromthe horizontal, it
views the top of the same building. (Include a properly labelled diagram) (T – 6 marks; C – 2
marks)
a. How far apart are thetwo buildings?
b. How tall is thebuilding viewed by thecamera?
