 Read out loud the American English words
under the picture together with students on
pg.124
 Play the recording (draw attention to American
pronunciation of /r/ in elevator, store and
sneakers).
 Read out the introduction to the text. Use the
text to elicit the information that Cardiff is the
capital of Wales and that Los Angeles is n
California on the east coast of the USA. During
the recording ask students to look for differences
between the family’s life in Britain and their new
life in the USA.
 While reading pause the video and focus in used
to/ didn’t use to. However, their life has changed
and they do things different now.
 Give explanation to the grammar- used to, and
point out that it would be possible to use the past What hobbies/have?
simple in the examples. However, used to is
better because it conveys the idea of habitual
activity that no longer happens.
 Explain the exercise 4 to the students that all the
sentences are making contrast between the past
and the present.
 Exercise 5 Give students feedback of the song
“The song This used to be my playground was
recorded by Madonna as the soundtrack for the
1992 film A league of their own and appeared on
her album Something to Remember in 1995.
 Ask students to write sentences the way they
used to be compared with the way they are now
and then read them out in pairs.

Evaluation The students will be evaluated in individuals work and group
work.
Expectations Some of the students were eager to work together some of them
weren’t found of the idea of working together.
