MELODY 1/3

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING

MELODY, wearing airpods, sits at the table eating cereal.

ELAINE enters, on the phone to her assistant, her phone
pressed between her ear and shoulder. She has a bag in one
hand and a folder in the other.

ELAINE
No, Jared, you can't keep using
typewriter font. Please, figure it
out. My e-mails look like ransom
notes. Also, can you check my desk
for my--
(noticing Melody)
--Headphones. Never mind.

Elaine drops her belongings and hangs the phone up.

ELAINE (CONT'D)
Melody, I need those headphones back.

Melody doesn't hear and continues eating.

ELAINE (CONT'D)
Melody? Melody.
(then)
MELODY!

Melody cracks a smile and takes the headphones out.

MELODY
I wasn't listening to anything, I
just wanted to see what you'd do.

ELAINE
(annoyed)
Melody, you can't keep taking my--
(catches herself)
I know what you're doing. I read
this in that parenting book. You're
purposefully annoying me to develop
an independent identity away from
me...

MELODY
What, no!

ELAINE
No. So you're still emotionally
attached to your mom?

MELODY
What! Gross, no!

2.

As Elaine goes to grab the headphones, she notices Melody's

eyeliner.

ELAINE
And this eyeliner. It's to suggest
inner turmoil to your peers?

MELODY
It's a look. I'm going through things
that you can't begin to understand.

ELAINE
Just swap out the eyeliner every
three to six months or you could get
an infection.

Melody is frustrated.

MELODY
I have some real problems, take it
seriously.

Elaine turns to Melody.

ELAINE
How are you? How's school?

MELODY
God mom! I don't want to talk to
you!

Elaine stares at Melody. Melody stares at Elaine.

ELAINE
This part wasn't in the book.

MELODY
Maybe I'm deeper and more complicated
than your book can handle.

Elaine stares at Melody.

ELAINE
Do you want some choco-cookie ice
cream?

MELODY
Ugh. You think that's going to help?

Elaine pulls out the ice cream and eats it.

ELAINE
(mouth full)
Suit yourself.

Melody can't hold out any longer.

MELODY
Can I have some?

Elaine hands her the carton. Melody digs in.

ELAINE
I love you, honey.

MELODY
Love you too.
