SWIMMING IS FOR LOSERS

By

Morgan Bull
FADE IN:

1 EXT. SWIMMING POOL- LATE EVENING 1

OLIVE (16) is floating in a swimming pool staring out towards

the ceiling. There are three other people who are also
floating around her. She closes her eyes.

CUT TO DAY BEFORE:

2 INT. MUM'S CAR- MORNING 2

Olive is glaring ahead towards her new school, her mum, LISA
(50s), is beside her.

LISA
(with genuine worry)
It doesn't look so bad darling, it
will be a new start. If you feel
overwhelmed then talk to your tutor,
I've already emailed him about the
situation.

OLIVE
I know, I know, I haven't had a
problem for the last few months so I
should be fine.

LISA
That's good sweetie, oh I forgot to
say, there's a swimming pool area at
my new job, maybe you could start
swimming again?

OLIVE
Mum, this is the last thing I want to
be talking about now.

LISA
I just worry about you that's all.
Since what happened with your father,
I just want us to be happy. I love you-

Olive puts her earphones in which is roaring music. She puts

her hood up in hope to hide from the world and reluctantly
follows the other students entering the school.

3 INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR- MORNING 3

She looks around anxiously as other students are rushing

through the corridor as Olive unsuccessfully tries to dodge
them. Desperately looking for the room number, without any
luck.

Worriedly, she starts to pick up the pace with her head down,
in her mind she hears repeatedly.

OLIVE (V.O)
You're going to be the odd one out,
everyone is looking at you... Look.

OLIVE'S HALLUCINATION 1:

She looks up to see that all sound and movement has been put
on a standstill, everyone has stopped to gaze murderously
towards Olive.

END OF HALLUCINATION 1:

This hallucination transports her mind to a past nightmare.

HALLUCINATION 2:

4 INT. BATHROOM 4

FLASHBACK She is in the bathroom her head is underwater she

struggles to breathe. Olive is furiously splashing and tries
to come back up for air.

END OF HALLUCINATION 2:

5 INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR- MORNING 5

A student abruptly bumps into her.

Olive looks back at the crowd as they drift into class. Olive
reluctantly glances at the person who has bumped into her.
This student, VALERIE (17) oozes confidence and smiles kindly
towards Olive.

VALERIE
Sorry for bumping into you, it gets so
bloody crowded around here.

OLIVE
Oh, um it's okay.

3.

VALERIE
Well, lets at least introduce
ourselves, I'm guessing you're new as
I've never seen you around! What's
your name?

OLIVE
Uhh... I'm Olive.

VALERIE
I'm Valerie. You don't need to worry
about this school, we're a lovely
bunch I swear!

Olive with force tries to smile at Valerie, she casts around

for the room she previously tried to look for.

VALERIE (CONT'D)
What are you looking for?

Valerie grabs the timetable before Olive can object.

VALERIE (CONT'D)
Oh FG08? That room is just over there
on the right, I got to go to form but
I'll see you later Olive!

Valerie confidently glides through the crowd until she's out

of sight.

Olive takes a moment to stare, marvelling at Valerie's

confidence with a smile. She then composes herself and
quickly heads towards the room just before the bell rings.

6 EXT. SCHOOL ENTRANCE- AFTERNOON 6

Olive rushes out of the school with her head hanging down and
her earphones securely in, desperate to get as far away from
the school as possible.

As she shuffles down the road, she hears a noise scurrying

towards her, Olive increases her stance to prevent any
interactions. The noise touches her arm, forcing her to turn
round and take her earphones out.

VALERIE
Damn you walk so fast! Nearly couldn't
catch up with you, I wanted to
introduce you to my mates.

Casually strolling behind Valerie are two boys, both in

contrast to each other, the boy on the left, SIMON (17),

waves eagerly towards the two girls. The boy of the right,
JIM (17), smokes a cigarette whilst smiling at Olive.

SIMON
(over-enthusiastic)
For Christ's Sake, you could at least
wait for us Valerie, you know I
haven't done my couch to 5k yet!

JIM
(finishes cigarette and glances at
Olive)
Hey, who's the newbie?

VALERIE
Boys, this is Olive, Olive these are
the boys, and yes these are sadly my
best friends...

Simon hurls himself at Olive into an overly friendly hug.

Olive freezes in surprise.

SIMON
Ooooh, what are you listening to? This
will be the big factor of whether you
will be my friend...

Simon eagerly puts the earphones in which are blaring out an

acoustic version of The Beatles. Simon shrieks and starts
singing along.

SIMON (CONT'D)
Oh. My. God. I love your music taste,
we will definitely be good friends.

JIM
(grabbing the earphones away from
Simon and puts them in)
Pretty nice, I personally enjoy the
Rubber Soul album.

Jim winks at Olive as she timidly smiles towards the boys.

The others start singing along as they follow Olive down the
street.

SIMON
We're heading this way as well, mind
if we tag along?

5.

OLIVE
Oh, yeah sure.

VALERIE
So, how was your first day of school
anyway, on the scale of shit-ish to
very shit?

OLIVE
Uh, quite shit I guess.

VALERIE
Well, you've got us now, and you can't
get rid of us I'm afraid. How about we
do something tomorrow night, I think
there's an end of summer party going
on at Parker road if you know where
that is?

OLIVE
Oh yeah, yeah I do.

VALERIE
Perfect! We will see you there then!
Come on boys, let's have a rummage in
our parent's drinks cabinet.

The group starts whooping in excitement and walk off, Jim

kiddingly kicks Simon for a laugh and jogs off, both Valerie
and Simon start laughing and strolls towards him until they
are all out of sight.

Olive chuckles and then composes herself, she puts her

earphones in and doesn't put her hood up. She carries on
walking down the road.

7 INT. OLIVE'S BEDROOM- EVENING 7

There are piles of unopened moving boxes surrounding this

small bedroom. The only things that have been unpacked are
the music and movie posters and a variation of vinyls that
artistically displayed on the wall.

Olive is staring out towards the ceiling, willing herself to

go to sleep. She eventually closes her eyes and drifts off.

DREAM SEQUENCE 1:

8 INT. OCEANARIUM- DREAM 8

Walking through the oceanarium, Olive marvels at the various

sea creatures scurrying around. Olive lingers when she sees a

shark swim past.

She shares an interaction with this shark, yet feels a

presence hurrying towards her. The presence draws closer and
closer until it reaches her, Olive screams.

DREAM SEQUENCE 2:

9 INT. OLIVE'S BEDROOM- DREAM 9

She wakes up and looks down to her arms and legs to discover
shark bites have appeared. She lets out a scream.

10 INT. OLIVE'S BEDROOM- EVENING 10

Olive wakes up and checks her body for bites but none can be
seen. She falls back to bed, quietly crying into the night.

11 INT. OLIVE'S BEDROOM- MORNING 11

Olive is sitting in the middle of her bed looking at

postcards from around the world, most of them have images of
deep-sea divers and handwritten paragraphs from her late
father.

OLIVE
I wish you were still real.

She is staring at the postcards willing them to become alive.

OLIVE
How can you leave us here on our own?
I don't know how it can go back to the
way it was. Nothing feels real any
more!

Olive pushes all the postcards on the floor in a rage, unshed

tears are in her eyes as she gasps for breath.

After a moment, Olive composes herself as she stares at the

scattered postcards on the floor.

There is a knock on the door. Lisa quietly enters after no

response.

LISA
Hey sweetie, I think I'm going to go
for a walk by the beach if you want to
come-

Created using Celtx

7.

OLIVE
No not today, I still have a bit of
unpacking to do.

LISA
Okay, maybe next time? I'll see you
later.

Olive's mum quietly turns around and starts to rush out of

the small bedroom, feeling unwanted.

OLIVE
Mum?

LISA
(quickly turns around, looking
exhausted)
Yes, Hunny?

OLIVE
I just want to say... thank you.

Lisa stares at Olive in shock for a few moments, feeling

overwhelmed, she composes herself and walks out the door.

CUT TO:

12 EXT. PARKER ROAD- 10 PM 12

Olive is rushing to get back home with a shopping bag in her

hand, she comes across thumping music from one of the houses.

Olive pauses in front of the house with a pained look painted

on her face, she sighs and starts to walk home.

VALERIE (O.S)
Hey Olive! Is that Olive? Yeah, it is!

Olive turns to see Valerie happily sipping a Lambrini, Simon

is confidently dancing towards the thumping of the music,
ushering Olive to join; and Jim, laughing at Simon, shakes
his head and walks towards Olive.

JIM
The party is pretty dead in there, we
were thinking of going somewhere else
if you are up for it?

Olive glances down the street taking a deep breath and slowly
looks back to the group with a pained look on her face.

Created using Celtx

8.

OLIVE
I, Um, yeah sure where are you
thinking of going?

VALERIE
There's a primary school around the
corner which is quite popular by us
teens, our little brat pack like to go
there and chill.

OLIVE
That sounds kinda fun, but won't we
get caught?

SIMON
That's the fun in it.

Valerie puts her arm around Olive to draw her closer to the
group as they walk towards the park. Simon is loudly singing
out of tune while Jim grabs Valerie's Lambrini.

13 EXT. PRIMARY SCHOOL- SWIMMING POOL- EVENING 13

The room fills with anxiety as they enter the swimming pool.
They walk towards the edge of the pool and sit on the edge,
Olive reluctantly joins.

SIMON
Ta-da! Welcome to the brat pack
hideout.

VALERIE
(dramatically)
We thought we could take you here to
bid farewell to our sneak ins during
the summer-

SIMON
With Strongbows.

VALERIE (CONT'D)
Confess our worries and moan about the
hardships of being a teenager at this
day and age, with Strongbows...

Laughing with the group, Valerie puts her feet in the pool,
the others happily join her.

OLIVE
Thank you for being really nice to me,
I find it difficult to talk to people.

Created using Celtx

9.

VALERIE
Yeah, that's understandable. At least
you got us eh? We'll help you through
it.

The other two nod in reassurance, Jim grabs a portable

speaker out of his bag, there is a distant sound of music
which calms Olive.

SIMON
Guys, you know what we have to do...

JIM
Oh, I think you are right there.

VALERIE
Olive, you are going to love this.

The group giddily get up, Jim excitedly stands up, removes
some of his clothes and turns around, he swiftly falls back
into the water.

Olive curiously gets up with the others, looking nervously

towards the water.

Simon repeats the same action as Jim. Valerie grabs Olive's

hand and steers her towards the shallow pool steps.

VALERIE
Don't think, follow my steps. Trust
me.

Olive nervously looks down towards the two grinning boys.

Olive closes her eyes as she feels the water pooling around
her. She carries on walking into the water until shes nearly
fully submerged, Olive takes a breath and goes under.

Once she's underwater, she smiles as she looks around

underwater. When she feels ready Olive arises from the water,
immediately hearing clapping and laughing from the group.

SIMON
Wooo you did it, Olive! You should be
so proud of yourself!

They start to splash each other. Olive is giggling and also

joins in with the splashing.

VALERIE
Don't you just wish that summer could

10.

last forever? I wish that we can

always stay in this moment, listen to
some tunes and chat shit.

Valerie dramatically sighs and starts floating on her back.

OLIVE
How do you guys do that?

JIM
Here we'll help.

The group surround Olive and lift her until she is balanced
in the water, they let her free to float by herself.

Olive smiles towards the ceiling, she remains in this moment.

After a while, Olive looks around for the group, she

discovers that they have disappeared. She swiftly inspects
around her and doesn't see anyone in sight.

Olive stares contently at the water and submerges herself.

Once shes underwater, she screams.

14 EXT. PARKER ROAD- 1 AM 14

Olive is walking back home. Her hair and clothes are soaked
and her earphones are dragging on the floor. She catches
glimpses of the group staggered in the street as she shuffles
down the middle of the deserted road.

MONTAGE:

15 INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR- MORNING 15

-Someone bumps into Olive in the school, it's just another

student.

16 EXT. SCHOOL ENTRANCE- AFTERNOON 16

-After school, Olive is walking home on her own.

17 EXT. PARKER ROAD- 10 PM 17

-In the evening, Olive is staring at the house party.

END OF MONTAGE.

18 INT. OLIVE'S HOUSE- NIGHT 18

Olive eventually reaches her house, as soon as she walks in

Lisa rushes down the stairs.

LISA
Where the hell have you been?

Olive sniffles as she defeatedly slumps onto the stairs.

OLIVE
It happened again mum, th-they seemed
so real this time.

LISA
(staring worriedly at Olive)
Oh god Olive, don't worry darling we
can sort this out.

OLIVE
I f-felt this would happen again, but
I ignored it. I-I think I need to do
that CBT they mentioned last time.

LISA
I think this would be best, you need
to remember what's real and what's
not.

Olive bursts into tears, Lisa hurries over to the stairs and
cradles Olive in her arms.

19 INT. COUNSELLING OFFICE 19

Olive is sat directly across her COUNSELLOR, she is looking

nervously around at this new scenario. The counsellor
interrupts her thoughts.

COUNSELLOR
Now that we have introduced ourselves,
tell me a bit more about you and why
you are here.

OLIVE
I um have been experiencing
hallucinations over the last few
years. They have gotten worse as time
has gone on-

Olive looks away for a moment as tears start to fall down her
face.

- ever since my dad died. At this

point, they seem really real. I feel
like I'm losing touch with reality.

COUNSELLOR
That's why you're here, coming to this
session is a big step in your
progress. Now whenever you're
comfortable and ready, tell me more
about your most recent hallucinations.

They both smile at each other, Olive wipes her tears and
carries on with the session.

20 EXT. SCHOOL ENTRANCE- MORNING, 3 WEEKS LATER. 20

Olive stares towards the school entrance, she turns around

and gives her Mum a reassuring smile. She puts her earphones
in.

21 INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR- MORNING 21

Olive wanders through the corridor, trying to find the room

number. She bumps into a GIRL, they both smile at each other.

OLIVE
Hey uh, I'm Olive, I was wondering
where PG16 was?

GIRL
Oh hi, I'm Peyton! I'm in that room as
well, do you want to walk together?

Olive smiles and then nods, she follows Peyton down the
corridor.

Just as they walk through the classroom, Olive feels a

presence behind her.

Olive cautiously looks back to find the group directly behind

her.

Olive with a shaky breath closes her eyes for a moment and
opens them again, to find that they have disappeared.

She can hear the distant sounds of waves gliding onto the
shore. Olive closes her eyes.

22 EXT. SEAFRONT- SUNSET 22

Envisioning her staring out into the deep abyss of the ocean.

13.

She steps forward.

23 INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR- MORNING 23

She smiles and enters the classroom with Peyton without

looking back.

Original Risk Assessment: Swimming is for Losers

A RISK ASSESSMENT MUST BE COMPLETED TO COMPLY WITH LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

When completing your Risk Assessment think of PETE: PEOPLE, EQUIPMENT, TASK, ENVIRONMENT

EQUIPMENT AND THE BEACH: Equipment from the Kit Room MUST NOT be used ON OR NEAR the beach as small particles of sand and sea spray can cause significant
damage. If equipment is used on or near the beach you will receive a fixed £25 fee. If the equipment is found to be damaged due to this use you will also be liable for an
additional fee covering the cost of repair/replacement. There are Beach Use Kits (camera and tripod) available to book if filming in a beach location is unavoidable.

USING ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT OUTSIDE: We DO NOT recommend using any mains powered electrical items outside. However, when electrical equipment is being
operated outside using power from the mains supply you must adhere to HSE Code of Practice BS7909-2011 which covers using temporary electrical systems for entertainment
and related purposes (this includes using lighting systems, location lighting and television equipment). All electrical equipment used in this way MUST be installed by a fully
qualified electrician (evidence required).

1. Describe the Activity

Risk Assessment Title: Swimming is for Losers
Date: 22/04/2020
Supervisors Name: Bryony Burton
Description: Our cast and crew will be filming over four days in various locations, for smaller locations like the Oceanarium and the Primary School we will have a skeleton crew, therefore more
focus on potential hazards. The Production Manager will do a Tool Box talk before shooting every day to highlight all the potential risks within that location and the best solutions to prevent any
harm, also a lifeguard will be present at the swimming pool day for extra protection for the crew and cast. Although the script shows how the characters at under 18s, the cast will be 20 years old
and over.

All the equipment will be protected by the DOP and Sound Design when travelling to and from locations, also in every location, we will communicate with the location to provide a kit room or an
area to store equipment safely; for either of these options there will be an assistant to make sure the equipment is protected and that it isn't in the way of other crew members, actors or the public.
For the swimming pool day, we will make sure that all equipment is within 2m away from the water, and will only use the GoPro for in water activity; as well as using the Beach Use kit for the beach
scene.

Page 1/13
Both Production Manager and Director will make sure that all cast and crew know what they are doing on each particular day so there will be no confusion, and make sure they have as much rest
in between days to prevent over-exhaustion. Every day, the manager will review the weather if the day includes outside shots and will communicate to the cast and crew what will be happening at
all times, using the group chat as well as updating call sheets when necessary.

Rough Outline of Shooting Schedule
Green Memo

Date: 23/04/2020
To: All Production Cast and Crew
Subject: Green Memo for Swimming is for Losers

One of our main aims to ensure that our whole production remains sustainable, therefore we can
reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint both behind the scenes and on screen. Your
support and assistance are crucial if we are to achieve our goals in making this the greenest
production possible.

Whe e e ible e ll be ed ci g a e ci g e i me all e ible ma e ial a d

implementing re-use it programs through donation. Throughout the process, we will be tracking our
carbon emissions and will need your cooperation in gathering information. It is important that each
unit production member is aware of our sustainability objectives and priorities and that each crew
member participates.

Daily Walkthrough:

Daily Walkthroughs will be crucial to highlight that we have all identified how to make a successful
sustainable production, which would be posted on the group chat daily. This is to ensure that
everyone are all in communication with each other.

We have asked all crew and cast members if they can bring their own water bottles on set, therefore
we can reduce our plastic use on set. Moreover, for our small breaks we will provide coffee mugs
and also encourage cast and crew to bring their own coffee mugs. 1st AD and assistants will ensure
ha e e e bel gi g a e clea ed a d gi e each ca a d c e membe by the end of the
day. For all coffee cups, plates and other disposable item, they will be biodegradable to help to
reduce the carbon footprint.

We would encourage people to walk or cycle to all locations if they can, to reduce carbon emissions
from transport. Moreover, we would be willing to ask crew members to use public transports like
buses which emits less carbon emissions than a normal car would be, to support this we would offer
to pay for their travelling expenses.

Our production crew have decided to remain digital throughout productions, having the risk
assessment, schedules and call sheets all on our laptops when on set. For the actors we would send
the script way in advance of production, therefore, they potentially would not to need to print out
the script. If however, they need a printed copy, then we would print it on recycled paper, and use
the least amount of paper as possible.

Tool Box Talk Transcript-

Thursday 23rd April-

This is the first day of filming, we will only be at one location today. In this house there is only
limited space so be weary of all the cables and other equipment to prevent tripping hazards.
There will be lighting used, only the DOP and 1st AC should handle any of the equipment. I
have checked with Anya all the safety precautions for putting the SFX make up on Carmen.

Friday 24th April-

For this day it will be slightly more simple, we have a skeleton crew this morning and will
meet everyone else at the university later. For both we need to all wear high vis jackets for the
public. At the university we will need to create a safe zone around our filming area, so we
don t get in the way of other students and lecturers.

Saturday 25th April-

We will all wear high vis jackets for filming today. It won t be raining so we will be able to
film outside, the scene with the car will be moving for the parking shots, so we will need to
make sure that all of you maintain an appropriate distance from the moving vehicle. In the
evening location, it will be darker so we need to take precaution. I have added the map of the
area on the call sheets, let me know if any of you are having trouble with getting home
afterwards, I can provide information on available bus services. We will be working on the
road for these scenes, I will assign Alex and Jack to watch the road for oncoming traffic to
maintain road safety.

Sunday 26th April-

This is the last day of filming, and probably the day that has the biggest risks as we will be
working near and in water today. At this swimming pool we have put down hazard tapes at a
2m distance from the pool edge, only a limited crew and the cast can go near or in the pool.
Today we have a lifeguard to watch over our filming today, and I will also watch over
everyone to make sure everyone is doing their part in the safest possible way.

For the second location we are at the beach with only a skeleton crew, the weather should
stay nice today and the tide will be calm as well, we have informed the coastguard that we
will be filming. No one will be going in the water for this scene, only near it. Carmen will be
roughly 50 cm from the sea, and the crew will roughly be 1m or 2m away from the sea. My
phone is fully charged so I can receive or take any calls for emergencies.
