Oct 30,2023 – Domain Name, Host & Website Development

I have actively started the web development of my project as of October 21st and met
with my mentor to get started. I made a time schedule that holds all the dates which I
need to complete my capstone. By sticking to the time schedule, it will help me stay on
top of things and not allow myself to fall behind causing me to get confused on what I
still have to complete. I made my time schedule in Excel so it is easy to filter what I have
completed and what I must be working on each day. This fits in with the core competency
“Critical Thinking” and specifically my weakness “I can assess my progress”.

I have done research and have ideas of what I would like to add as content. I have
registered my domain name on the Go Daddy website. This was an interesting experience
and something new that I learned. When choosing my domain name, I had to think of a
name that would be easy to lookup for the audience I am trying to attract as well as
choosing one that has a connection to my topic. I created a list of names that I thought
sounded good and fitting towards what my website is about. I then narrowed the list
down to four choices and put them in the order in which I would use if my first chose
was taken. I asked another one of my mentors to choose which out of the names they
thought was best without telling them which ones I picked and to my surprise they picked
three and only one was the same. I asked why they chose the ones they did and they
explained how one sounded medical, like a doctor’s website that is meant to be
educational on what dyslexia is and how its connected neurologically. My website is more
about a teens perspective of what it is like to be dyslexic. Some of the names I created
were more cryptic with abbreviations and some were more to the point and spelled out.
The name I decided that best fit my website was www.dyslexiateenspov.ca. I drafted out
my website ideas for my layout and I’m ready to start development. I faced a challenge
when wanting to start my website development as Go Daddy would not allow me to
transfer my domain name over to another host. It was a good thing though because it
worked out to my benefit as Go Daddy has a better platform for my web development.

This week I am laying out my homepage and all the subpages. I am meeting with my
mentor and have scheduled October 30th and November 1st to layout my website. This
work must be complete by Nov 4th where I plan to start adding content.
