LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Theoretical Review

Online cinema booking systems have emerged as transformative tools in the entertainment
industry, reshaping the way audiences' access and experience movies (Smith, 2017). This
conceptual review delves into the fundamental principles and concepts that underpin the
paradigm shift facilitated by online cinema booking systems.

At the heart of online cinema booking systems lies the concept of accessibility and
convenience (Chen, 2016). These systems leverage digital technology to break down barriers
to accessing cinema experiences. Audiences can effortlessly explore movie listings, view
showtimes, and secure tickets from the comfort of their digital devices. This emphasis on
accessibility aligns with the evolving expectations of modern consumers who seek on-
demand, user-friendly solutions.

The concept of a user-centric experience is central to the design and functionality of online
cinema booking systems (Alhifzi & Anwar, 2018). User interfaces are meticulously crafted to
ensure intuitive navigation, seamless ticket booking, and an overall frictionless process. The
user experience is not just a consideration but a fundamental concept that drives customer
satisfaction and engagement.

Data takes center stage in the conceptual framework of these systems (Wang, 2019). They
collect and analyze user data, unraveling insights into viewing preferences, booking
behaviors, and market trends. Data-driven decision-making becomes a concept instrumental
in shaping cinema offerings, marketing strategies, and operational efficiency.

Online cinema booking systems introduce the concept of operational efficiency (Reddy &
Kumar, 2017). Automation streamlines tasks such as seat selection, payment processing, and
ticket distribution, reducing manual intervention. The optimization of operations ensures
smoother transactions and enhances the overall cinema experience.

The systems embrace the concept of revenue diversification (Jones & Brown, 2018). Beyond
ticket sales, they provide platforms for cinemas to maximize revenue through concessions,
premium services, and targeted promotions. This concept underscores the importance of
multiple income streams in the entertainment industry.
Ethical considerations form a critical concept within the framework of online cinema booking
systems (Gao, 2020). Robust data security and privacy practices are essential to safeguard
user information. The concept of ethical data handling underscores the importance of
building and maintaining user trust.

The concept of inclusivity addresses concerns related to the digital divide (Smith, 2018).
Cinemas employing online booking systems must ensure alternative booking methods for
individuals without internet access or digital devices. Inclusivity aligns with the goal of
preserving cinema experiences for diverse audiences.

Innovation serves as a driving concept, propelling the exploration of cutting-edge

technologies within online cinema booking systems (Raj, 2021). Concepts like virtual reality
(VR) and augmented reality (AR) hold the potential to redefine how audiences interact with
movies, offering immersive experiences beyond traditional cinema settings.

In summary, online cinema booking systems are grounded in a conceptual framework that
spans accessibility, user-centric design, data-driven decision-making, operational efficiency,
revenue diversification, ethical considerations, inclusivity, and innovation (Chen & Lee,
2019). These concepts collectively redefine the cinema experience, ensuring it remains
relevant, accessible, and engaging in the evolving landscape of the digital age.

2.1.1 Evolution of Movie Distribution

The history of cinema is closely intertwined with the methods employed for distributing films
to eager audiences. Traditionally, this distribution model revolved around physical ticket
counters at cinemas, necessitating moviegoers to queue up for ticket purchases. However,
with the advent of the internet and digital technology, a new paradigm has emerged.

Online Ticketing Platforms: Online cinema booking systems signify a monumental shift in
movie distribution (Alhifzi & Anwar, 2016). They have established a virtual gateway that
empowers movie enthusiasts to seamlessly navigate through showtimes, select their preferred
seats, and secure reservations – all from the comfort and convenience of their digital devices.
This shift from traditional physical ticketing to online platforms is underpinned by a robust
theoretical framework that harmonizes technology and user experience.

User Experience (UX) and Accessibility: At the heart of online cinema booking systems lies
the theoretical foundation of User Experience (UX) design principles (Chen & Lee, 2019).
These principles ensure that these platforms are not only technologically sophisticated but
also intuitively designed, making them efficient and user-friendly. Moreover, accessibility
considerations broaden the reach of these systems, ensuring that individuals with diverse
abilities can easily navigate and utilize them, thereby promoting inclusivity in the cinema
experience.

2.1.2 Operational Efficiency and Data Management

Efficiency in cinema operations is a key theoretical facet that online booking systems
address:

Automation: Online cinema booking systems bring automation to numerous aspects of the
ticketing process (Gao, 2020). From seat selection to payment processing, automation
reduces the workload on cinema staff and significantly diminishes the potential for errors that
are inherent in manual ticketing.

Data Management: A robust theoretical foundation in data management is imperative for the
smooth functioning of these systems (Smith, 2017). They maintain comprehensive databases
containing critical information, including movies, showtimes, and seat availability. This data
is continually updated in real-time, ensuring that moviegoers receive accurate and up-to-date
information.

Staff Roles and Insights: Online booking systems redefine the roles of cinema staff (Jones &
Brown, 2018). Instead of focusing on manual ticket sales, staff members may engage in tasks
such as data entry, customer support, and statistical analysis. The systems provide invaluable
insights into customer preferences and booking patterns, guiding strategic decisions that
enhance the overall cinema experience.

2.1.3 User Engagement and Convenience

The success of online cinema booking systems pivots on their ability to engage users and
provide unparalleled convenience:

Mobile Accessibility: A theoretical framework of mobile responsiveness ensures that users

can access these systems from a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets (Chen
& Lee, 2019). This flexibility empowers moviegoers to make reservations on the go,
reinforcing the notion of cinema as a versatile and accessible entertainment option.

Real-time Updates: Online cinema booking systems excel at delivering real-time updates on
seat availability, showtimes, and movie descriptions (Raj, 2021). This real-time nature
amplifies the user experience by enabling customers to make informed choices swiftly and
with confidence.

Convenience: Convenience is at the forefront of these systems' theoretical underpinnings

(Alhifzi & Anwar, 2016). They eliminate the need for physical presence at ticket counters,
effectively saving customers precious time and mitigating the frustration associated with long
queues. This convenience extends to ticket cancellations and refunds, which can be managed
seamlessly through the platform, adding a layer of flexibility that enhances user satisfaction.

2.1.4 Revenue Generation and Data Utilization

Generating revenue is a pivotal consideration linked to online cinema booking systems:

Diverse Revenue Streams: The theoretical understanding of diverse revenue streams,

including ticket sales, concessions, and premium services, informs the design of these
systems (Chen, 2016). They offer a platform for upselling and cross-selling, thereby
optimizing profitability and making the cinema a multifaceted entertainment destination.

Data-Driven Insights: Online booking systems accumulate vast datasets concerning customer
preferences, movie selections, and booking behaviors (Wang, 2019). The utilization of data
analytics and theoretical models enables cinemas to gain profound insights into their
audience, thus fine-tuning marketing strategies and revenue-generation tactics.

2.1.5 Challenges and Ethical Considerations

While online cinema booking systems offer numerous advantages, they also present
theoretical challenges and ethical considerations:

Data Security and Privacy: Safeguarding user data and ensuring privacy protection are
paramount (Gao, 2020). The theoretical framework governing data security protocols and
ethical data handling practices must be meticulously adhered to, maintaining user trust and
confidence.

Digital Divide: The digital transformation of cinema ticketing may inadvertently marginalize
individuals who lack internet access or digital devices (Smith, 2018). Addressing this
theoretical challenge requires considering alternative booking methods and ensuring
equitable access to cinema experiences for all segments of the population.
Fair Pricing: Theoretical pricing models must strike a delicate balance between convenience
fees and affordable ticketing to ensure accessibility for all moviegoers (Jones & Brown,
2018). Cinema, as an inclusive form of entertainment, should be accessible to diverse
socioeconomic groups.

Innovative Concepts: Theoretical innovation in areas such as virtual reality (VR) cinema
experiences and augmented reality (AR) applications within cinema booking systems can
introduce exciting new dimensions to the industry (Raj, 2021). These innovations promise to
redefine the way audiences engage with movies, offering immersive experiences that extend
beyond the traditional cinema space.

the increase in technology and digitalization, online movie systems have become much more
popular. Instead of wasting time in queues at the movie counter, it provides an easy and
efficient way to book the tickets online. It is quite fascinating to sit at home browsing the
movies which have been released, read the review and then book the tickets according to our
feasibility. The movie booking system has been in action for the last 15 years, but it gained
popularity after 2004 and its reach increased several folds in the past 6–10 years because of
increasing net accessibility. In the proposed research paper, we have sorted out some of the
major issues related to online movie management systems. Due to increased traffic server
problems and transaction failure the major problems with the online movie booking system.
To sort out these Node JS and Mongo DB connectivity has been used. Also, there are some
more features which have been added and are new to the movie booking system like mailing
the review and trailer of the movie to the user while they book the ticket and showing the
view of screen from different orientation of screen. For some trustworthy review we have
designed our own questionnaire so that it can give an exact view of what is the true review of
a movie. These reviews will be cross checked by the editorial team and then published on the
web site. So basically, it's an advanced version of online movie booking system in which few
new features have been added as well as the problems with previous system has been
rectified.

Renugadevi et al (2022), A Study on Customers Attitude Towards Online Ticket Booking

During Covid-19 With Special Reference to Coimbatore City. This is an online booking
system that works all the time. This gives freedom to potential visitors to book a room or
ticket at any time they want. It also maximizes your sales because you are not limited by your
working hours. An online booking system is a piece of software used for reservation
management. In fact, studies show that a 24/7 online reservation system greatly increases the
number of bookings. With the development in science and technology the usage of online
ticket booking has been increased tremendously. Increase in online literacy encourages online
ticket booking and customer buying behavior. Highly demanded lifestyle, convenience,
information wide, scarcity of time induces the customers to move from traditional ticket
booking to online ticket booking. During Covid the need for online ticket booking increased
among the general public since people were not ready to face the crowd and they were
insisted about safety. That too during pandemic people were not ready to lose their safety and
they were very much conscious about their hygiene. Hence the researchers made an attempt
to study customer attitude towards online ticket booking during COVID-19 with special
reference to Coimbatore city. It was found that customers preferred online ticket booking for
their convenience and they are satisfied with the online ticket booking in various
factors.

Gazi et al (2019), Implementation of an efficient web-based movie ticket purchasing system

in the context of Bangladesh. The ‘Movie Ticket Purchase System’ is a web-based
application. In this application, people can purchase movie tickets from all movie theatres in
Bangladesh. Before purchasing a ticket, people have to do registration or login. This website
is built with PHP and JavaScript for back-end; HTML, CSS for front-end. All steps of the
software development life cycle are addressed properly to develop and implement the
software. This website has three panels: one for the admin, one for the Theatre Assistant and
another for the Customer/User. Admin can insert the theatres, and Theatre Assistant handled
maximum manual works on the website like movie add, delete, stop running, screen adds,
etc. This is the first website in Bangladesh where people can purchase tickets from multiple
movie halls and the site is only dedicated to this purpose. The website is very user-friendly
and attractive and can give comfort to the end users. Also, the theater owners that have no
digital platform for selling tickets can be a member of our service and get the opportunity of
using digital platform.

Reddy et al (2021), Online Movie Ticket Booking System. The project's goal is to allow
people to book movie tickets online. The Ticket Booking Process is a Web service that can be
used from anywhere with an Internet connection. The seats can be reserved using this
application. This online ticket ordering system creates a website for a movie theatre that any
website owner can use. To book tickets, the user must first log into the system and have a
credit card. An easy and alternative means of purchasing a movie ticket. After the customer
enters the information associated with the film, the system can include options for booking
the fare. Currently, the employees of the film lobby will not need to do something for ticket
booking since the process will be completed by the customer over the internet. Online movie
ticket booking is beneficial to both marketers and users. Users will book tickets online at any
time of day, 24 hours a day. Furthermore, since this is an internet application, they can buy
tickets from anywhere on the planet. Users of the movie platform should consider new films,
screen times, and movie locations. However, all this enthusiasm dissipates after waiting in
long lines for hours to get tickets. The website offers comprehensive information on currently
playing films on all platforms, including display times and reserved seats. Tickets are
purchased with a credit card which can be cancelled at any time. In this project, I have the
customers book tickets at festival times, so that prime users can see a larger number of tickets
and conveniently purchase one. Tickets can be purchased online at any time of the day or
night. Our reserved seat system also allows you to suspend tickets that have already been
reserved.

Pretty (2018), Online Ticket Booking Using Secure QR Code. The current suburban ticket
checking system comprises of many challenges, that is the tickets have to be checked
manually, travelers have to wait in long queues to get their tickets. An android mobile
application is developed through which tickets for local trains can be bought online. It
consists of the travel details and a QR code (Quick Response). For example: If a user buys a
ticket through this app, a QR code for the ticket will be automatically generated and its ID
will be stored in cloud. Users have to register their details like their name, mobile number and
fingerprints. Users will reserve their ticket and they will get their QR code. Same as that train
seat will also contain QR code Passenger have to scan the QR code on seat and punch their
finger id also. Admin will compare those QR code and fingerprint with existing data.
Through this admin will know about passenger’s presence on the seat.

Sarkar & Noel (2020), A project on Online Ticket booking system. The project's objective is
to book cinema tickets online. The Ticket Reservation Systems is an Internet based
application that can be accessed throughout the Net and can be accessed by anyone who has a
net connection. This application will reserve the tickets. This online ticket reservation system
provides a website for a cinema hall where any user of the internet can access it. Users are
required to login to the system and need a credit card for booking the tickets. Tickets can be
collected at the counter and watching movies with family and friends in theaters is one of the
best mediums of entertainment after having a hectic schedule. But all this excitement
vanishes after standing for hours in long queues to get tickets booked. The website provides
complete information regarding currently running movies on all the screens with details of
show timings, available seats. Ticket reservations are made using a credit card and can be
cancelled if needed. Our online tickets reservation system is one of the best opportunities for
those who cannot afford enough time to get their tickets reserved standing in long queues.
People can book tickets online at any time of day or night. Our reservation system also
provides an option to cancel the tickets which are reserved previously.
