One Inch Tall


One Inch Tall (Shel Silverstein)

If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school. The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool. A crumb of cake would be a feast And last you seven days at least, A flea would be a frightening beast If you were one inch tall. If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door, And it would take about a month to get down to the store. A bit of fluff would be your bed, You'd swing upon a spider's thread, And wear a thimble on your head If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum. You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb. You'd run from people's feet in fright, To move a pen would take all night, (This poem took fourteen years to write-'Cause I'm just one inch tall).

Facilitates language and literacy development in various ways. Emphasises on the intense use of concise language found in poetry as an important feature of effective communication in everyday life. Provides mental stimulation by engaging children in word puzzles, encouraging complex thinking and appreciation for nuance. Enables children to appreciate the sound and imagery of language and broadens their view of themselves and the world.

Enjoy playful, rhyming poetry about topics that are familiar and interesting to their age group. Have an emerging sense of humor and enjoy humorous poems.

Poetry helps them build phonemic awareness that will help them as they begin to read. Widens childrens knowledge on vocabulary.

Poetry can be presented through fun and interactive activities such as:
Puppetry Songs Videos Coloured-picture books

Children are natural puppeteers. Poems can be made into puppetry activity. Teachers can collect puppetmaking materials.
Eg: Scissors, tape, glue, paint, toilet paper rolls, socks, gloves, hats, ice cream sticks, old wooden spoons, buttons, ribbons, styrofoam and etc.

Types of puppets can be made:

Stick puppets. Hand puppets.

Children love to sing. Making songs out of the poems are the best tool to attract childrens interest in learning poetry. Emphasised on the pronunciation of the words in the poems should not be regarded.

Who can ever say no to watching animations? Children love to watch animations. Teachers should make videos based on the poems given. Teachers should make use of the drawing tools or applications in their computers to make drawings.

Coloured-picture Books
Children love colourful things. Introduce the poetry in the form of colouredpicture books. After reading the poems by showing the pictures, let the children draw their most favourite scene from the pictures. This can enhance their imagination.
