DESCRIPTION OF COMMUNITY-BASED TEACHING LEARNING ACTIVITIES

1. Aim. The students of B Sc (Nursing) Second Year and Fourth Year are required
to undergo Community Health Training in Urban and Rural areas, with the aim of
appreciating the principles of promotion and maintenance of health.

2. Areas / Affiliations. For Urban Community, an MOU has been signed with
Cantonment Board Jalandhar Cantt, Medical Branch of HQ 11 Corps for Khem Karan
Vihar (KK Vihar) Integrated Health Centre and HQ 11 Corps Medical Investigation
Room (MI Room). However, for rural community, the same is conducted in Village Soffi
Pind under PHC Jamsher Khas.

3. Duration. During B Sc (Nursing) Second Year and Fourth Year, each student is
required to attend 135 hours ie 2 week in the Urban Community and 2 Weeks in Rural
Community. In addition to the above, during internship 195 hours of practical training is
also required to be conducted in community areas.

4. Activities of Students in Community Area. The students build and maintain


rapport in community, identify demographic characteristics, health determinants and
community health resources, diagnose health needs of the individuals and families,
provide primary care in health centres, participate in college health program, participate
in national health programs (National Pulse Polio Immunization etc), counsel and
educate individuals, family & community regarding various diseases i.e. HIV, TB,
Diabetes, Hypertension, Mental Health, Adolescents, Elderly’s health etc. In addition to
above, health talks / programmes are also conducted to spread awareness on hygiene /
sanitation, waste management, water management, energy management and eco-
friendly agricultural practices.

5. Various activities such as Role Play, Workshops, Health Talks, Demonstrations


of various procedures ie blood tests, oral care, BP monitoring, vital signs, breast self-
examination, menstrual hygiene, family planning, water purification process etc are
being carried out.

6. By undergoing the community training in urban and rural community areas, the
students fulfilled the objectives laid down by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi which
lead to improvement in their skills.
