Lesson 10: Principal Roots and Irrational Numbers

Objectives:
a. Estimate the square root of a whole number to the nearest tenth.
b. Plot irrational numbers (up to square roots) on a number line.
c. Value accumulated knowledge as means of new understanding.

Square roots which are irrational such as √2, √3 and √5 can be estimated or
approximated to the nearest tenth from the values between which the square root lies.
Through this, you may plot each square root on a number line.

By Pair
Estimate each square root to the nearest tenth and plot on a number line.
a. √21 Hint: √21 is between 4 and 5
b. √55 Hint: √55 is between 7 and 8
c. √90 Hint: √90 is between 9 and 10

Estimate first the given square roots to the nearest tenth then plot and label each on
the number line below.

A √27 C √13 E √52

B √88 D √3
Solve each problem.
a. A standard Grade 7 classroom measures 7 m by 9 m. Its diagonal is √130 m.
Estimate the value of √130 to the nearest tenth.
b. The length of a rope used in a school game is √548 meters. Find its length up to
the nearest tenth.
c. Plot each square root (a. and b.) on a number line.

Estimate each square root to the nearest tenth and plot each on a number line.
a. √5 d. √38
b. √15 e. √24
c. √72
