III – PROCEDURE
A. Preliminaries
Motivation
Plot It!: Given the square roots below, plot each on a number line.
NOVELETA √81
NAIC √9
TERNATE √1
ROSARIO √49
TANZA √25
B. Lesson Proper
1. Teaching/Modeling
a. Estimate √12 to the nearest tenth.
- What are the two consecutive integers in which √12 lies?
Answer: the principal root √12 is between 3 and 4
- What are the principal roots of the two integers?
Answer: the principal roots of the two perfect squares are 9 and 16
- What is the middle value between the two integers? Take the square of it.
Answer: 3.5 is the middle value between 3 and 4, computing (3.5) 2 = 12.25
- Compute for the squares of numbers between the first integer and the middle
value.
Answer: Squares of numbers between 3 and 3.5
(3.1)2 = 9.61, (3.2)2 = 10.24, (3.3)2 = 10.89, and (3.4)2 = 11.56
- √12 is closer to what number?
Answer: 12 is closer to 12.25 (3.52) than to 11.56 (3.42)
- Estimate √12 according to the result.
Answer: Therefore, √12 is approximately 3.5.
b. Plot √12 on a number line.
√12
2. Analysis
- How do you estimate a square root to the nearest tenth?
- How do you plot a square root on a number line?
3. Guided Practice
By Pair
Estimate each square root to the nearest tenth and plot on a number line.
a. √21 Hint: √21 is between 4 and 5
b. √55 Hint: √55 is between 7 and 8
c. √90 Hint: √90 is between 9 and 10
4. Independent Practice
Estimate first the given square roots to the nearest tenth then plot and label each on
the number line below.
5. Generalization
Square roots which are irrational such as√2, √3 and √5 can be estimated or
approximated to the nearest tenth from the values between which the square root
lies. Through this, you may plot each square root on a number line.
6. Application
Solve each problem.
a. A standard Grade 7 classroom measures 7m by 9m. Its diagonal is √130.
Estimate the value of √130 to the nearest tenth.
b. The length of a rope used in a school game is √548 meters. Find its length up to
the nearest tenth.
c. Plot each square root (a. and b.) on a number line.
7. Assessment
Estimate each square root to the nearest tenth and plot each on a number line.
a. √5 d. √38
b. √15 e. √24
c. √72
