SUBJECT 1 – INDIVIDUAL AND GROUPED DATA

Question 1 – Individual Data
The following is the result of height measurement taken from a group of friends (in cm)

171, 180, 179, 156, 181, 175, 170, 170, 172, 160, 165, 175, 169, 171, 162

Calculate :
a. Median
b. IQR
c. Mean
d. Standard Deviation
e. Plot the Box-Whisker diagram

Question 2 – Individual Data

Two students compare their Test Score between the same 10 exams. The scores were recorded as :
Tommy 7 4 7 8 9 9 6 6 7 7
Yu 4 5 9 9 4 5 9 9 9 7

a. Show that both Tommy and Yu has the same Mean and Range
b. Which of the student you suspect has more variability in their score?
c. Prove your answer in b by calculating the standard deviation for both of the students
d. So which parameter is better on deciding variability, Mean or Standard Deviation?

Question 3 – Grouped Data

There is a change in the formula, the one that I gave you last time is different on the denominator. I
used (n-1) as the total number of frequency subtracted by one. Instead, just use the total of f without
being subtracted as shown in the formula above.
The number of candy counted in 30 packages were recorded as shown
Candy quantities 10 11 12 13 14 15
frequency 1 4 8 9 6 2
a. Calculate the Mean
(clue : since this is not a ranged group of data, no need to calculate midpoints)
b. Calculate the standard deviation

Question 4 – Grouped Data

Weight of 25 students are shown in the table shown :
Weight (kg) frequency
50 < x ≤ 60 1
60 < x ≤ 70 3
70 < x ≤ 80 9
80 < x ≤ 90 6
90 < x ≤ 100 4
100 < x ≤ 110 2
a. Calculate the standard deviation by using interval midpoints.
(clue : find the midpoint of the weight range first)
b. Plot the Cumulative Frequency Histogram
c. Using the Histogram, estimate the Median and IQR
d. Using the Histogram, estimate what percentage of kids are at risk of overweight? (weighs more
than 85kg)
e. Using the Histogram, estimate the number of kids if it’s known that the bottom 5% are
underweight
