Assignment No. 8

Subject: Elements of Machine Design [22564] Date: 24-09-2023

Name of Staff: Mr. S. L. Deshmukh Class: ME 5I
Topic- Design of Keys and Couplings

1) State any four types of keys with neat sketch.

2) Prove that for a square key the permissible crushing stress is twice the permissible shear
stress.
3) What is the effect of keyway on the strength of shaft. Write the expression.
4) Suggest suitable couplings in the following cases :
i) Shaft having perfect alignment
ii) Shaft having both lateral and angular misalignment.
5) Design a rectangle key for shaft of 50 mm diameter. The permissible stresses for key material
are 40 N/mm2 in shear and 70 N/mm2 in crushing.
6) Write the general design procedure of a flange coupling (unprotected type).
7) In a rigid flanged coupling to transmit 20 KW at 700 rpm the flanges are of cast iron and other
parts of C-40. Assume stresses for C.I. Tensile=28 N/mm2, Compressive=60 N/mm2, Shear =10
N/mm2, Stresses for C-40 Tensile=Compressive=110 N/mm2, Shear=40 N/mm2,
Bearing=25N/mm2. Determine diameter of shaft, diameter of bolts, if 6 bolts are used and
various flange dimensions.

8) A flanged protective type coupling is required to transmit 7.5 KW at 720 r.p.m. Assume the
following stresses for the coupling components.
Permissible shear stress for shaft, bolt and key material = 33 N/mm2
Permissible crushing stress for bolt and key material = 60 N/mm2
Find:
(i) Diameter of shaft
(ii) Dimensions of key
(iii) Diameter of bolt
