VI. Fabrication of pipes

The fabrication of pipes is carried out in different stages

a) Chamfering of pipes

The cut pipes are chamfered at a degree of 3

0 on each side as illustrated in figure for the Weld
to penetrate.

b) Marking and cutting.

 All pipes size diameter 100 mm and smaller shall be cut by electric powered,
circular machine with abrasive wheel. Metallic wheel cutters shall not be
permitted.

 For pipes with outside diameter 150 mm and greater shall be cut by
Oxyacetylene torch.

 After cutting, edges of pipe shall be grinded forming an angle of 30.

c) Pipe to pipe Fit-up

 Lay the two (2) pipes on top of the floor, with each pipe ends Aligned near each
other and level one length of pipe.

 Bring lengths together leaving only a small welding gap. In normal practice, a
welding electrode of 2.4 mm Ø size, removed of its covering and bent in the
middle at an angle of 30° is inserted between the two pipes to obtain a perfect
welding gap.
 Check for the levels.

 Tack on both the sides, and rotate the pipe to 90⁰ and repeat the same
procedure.

VII. Welding Of Pipes

Welding of pipes having a standard positioning to hold the welding holder and
positioning the electrode .1G, 2G, 5G and 6G pipe are applicable in the fabrication
and installation of Pipe lines

Welding Positions of Pipes

As illustrate in the above figure, first a fill weld is carried out on the joint for the weld
to penetrate the inner surface of pipe. The flux has to be chipped off and the weld is
cleaned with the use of wire brush. A final weld is carried over the fill weld to
maintain the finishing and rigidity of the weld and the pipe joint.
a) Butt Welding
Butt welding practice is done to the pipes Of 65 mm dia and above. After the pipe to
Pipe fit-up is done the welding work is carried out.

Document & Rev No: FPS Method Statement Rev 0 Date: 30.10.23

b) Socket Welding
Socket weld is carried out on Lower dia pipes i.e. for 50 mm and below. This practice
is carried out for the following reasons.

 Temporary tack welding is not needed for alignment, because in principle the
fitting ensures proper alignment.
 The weld metal cannot penetrate into the bore of the pipe.
 They can be used in place of threaded fittings, so the risk of leakage is much
smaller.
 Construction costs are lower than with butt-welded joints due to the lack of
exacting fit-up requirements and elimination of special machining for butt weld
end preparation
c) Safety measures to be followed
 When Welding or cutting near a hole in a wall or floor, a fire watch is required on
both sides of the wall or floor.
 A Fire extinguisher shall be maintained in the area and the fire watch shall
understand how to use it
 The area should be checked for at least an hour after the welding operation has
ceased to verify that no smoldering fire exist
