How do Plants Grow?

Learning Objectives Students will be able to identify what plants need to survive and grow their
own plant.
TEKS:
§112.11. Science, Kindergarten
(b) Knowledge and skills. (1) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student conducts
classroom and outdoor investigations following home and school safety procedures and uses
environmentally appropriate and responsible practices.
(2) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student develops abilities to ask questions and
seek answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. The student is expected to: (A) ask
questions about organisms, objects, and events observed in the natural world; (B) plan and
conduct simple descriptive investigations; (C) collect data and make observations using simple
tools; (D) record and organize data and observations using pictures, numbers, and words; and (E)
communicate observations about simple descriptive investigations.
§110.2. English Language Arts and Reading, Kindergarten
(b) Knowledge and skills. (1) Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening,
speaking, discussion, and thinking--oral language. The student develops oral language through
listening, speaking, and discussion. The student is expected to: (A) listen actively and ask
questions to understand information and answer questions using multi-word responses; (B)
restate and follow oral directions that involve a short, related sequence of actions; (C) share
information and ideas by speaking audibly and clearly using the conventions of language; (D)
work collaboratively with others by following agreed-upon rules for discussion, including taking
turns; and (E) develop social communication such as introducing himself/herself, using common
greetings, and expressing needs and wants.
Instructional Objectives:

•Students will be able to describe how plants grow from seed to plant.

This will cross over to ELAR as there will be a lot of reading and writing involved.
Materials Needed:
 A container to plant your seeds (We used a tray similar to this one we found at
our local gardening center. Be sure whatever you decide to use has holes for
draining.)
 Seed-starter soil
 Seeds (Here’s a good assortment of vegetable seeds .)
 Popsicle sticks
 Water

This Book:
Anticipatory Set:
Show students a plant. Ask them where they think the plant came from.
Do they just mysteriously pop up? Who made the flowers and trees? Has
anyone ever planted anything before and grown it? Can anyone tell me
why it would be important to know these things?
We’re going to play a quick icebreaker game like duck duck goose but
we’re going to call it seed seed grow. (10 minutes)
Also read The Tiny Seed (10 minutes)
Okay, now that I have their attention let’s get to the lesson!
I DO (30 minutes)

Yall watch me put these cards in order and then later we will play a game with them!
(These are not cut out, but I would have them cut out to put in order on our numbered
worksheet)
Scripture to focus on:
Psalms 104:14
14 He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food
from the earth.
God makes everything and he tells us that some things are made for food for us and for the
animals.

Now that we have gone over the steps on paper, I want you to watch
carefully what I do.
First, I get out my container. Then I fill it up with soil. I use my finger to
make a small hole in the top of my soil and then I place my bean into the
hole. I cover it gently with the remaining soil and then I use my popsicle
stick to mark the spot where I planted my seed. I use a very small amount
of water to put over my seed and then I am going to place it in this
window and watch it grow over the next couple of weeks! We will add
water as needed. Now that I have shown you how, we’re going to all make
one and watch them grow!

We Do
Ok, so now that you have seen me do this project, let me see the hands of
those who feel confident enough to do this project alone. (I will check for
those students who look totally lost and pair them with the students I know
can do it.)
I will give them all a sheet with the set of cards. I will give them 2 minutes
to put the cards in the right spaces. I will walk around and check their
work. I expect all the kids to get this assignment without a hitch, but I
might have some special ed students that still need to be paired so I will
watch for them and pair accordingly.
You Do
After this is done, I will hand them all a premade kit with all the materials
that they will need.
They will be working independently yes, but they will be following my
oral directions as a group. We will go through all the steps as I am walking
around checking their work.

Closure

Learning Objectives Students will be able to identify what plants need to survive and grow their
own plants. I will lead with a verbal Q and A over our lesson.
Okay class, what is the first step? Wait for hands to go up and then go over each step together as
a group in the same manner until all steps have been talked about in group discussion and it
seems most students understand.
Okay class, how is this information you have learned important to you and why?
Anticipate answers to be to grow food, flowers etc.
Go over these points:
 Plants are the main food source for living things, including humans.
 Plants provide us with many vitamins to keep us healthy.
 Green plants are the only living things that can make their own food. Plants harness the
energy that shines down on the Earth each day as light and use it to make their own food.

Assessment
For the assessment I will pass out this worksheet again and have them glue and paste them in the
order they are supposed to go
Reteach
Essential Understandings
• Green plants make their own food.
• Plants have roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds.
• Plants are the main food source for living things, including humans.
• Plants provide us with many vitamins to keep us healthy. Background Green plants are the only
living things that can make their own food. Plants harness the energy that shines down on the
Earth each day as light and use it to make their own food. Each leaf becomes a food factory as it
converts the energy to simple sugars that feed the plant and enable it to grow. The roots of the
plant anchor it and take nutrients from the soil. Stems carry food and water to other parts of the
plant. Flowers produce seeds, and seeds produce new plants. Plants are food for many other
living things, mainly animals. Animals that eat only plants are called herbivores. Deer, zebras,
cows, and other animals with hooves are examples of herbivores. Mammals, such as monkeys
and gorillas, that only eat fruit and leaves are also in this group.
Extensions
Students will at this point have the plant they have grown. I will have a few on hand extra in case
any student's plants do not make it. They can take this plant home with instructions I will provide
for planting and then grow it into a bean plant they can eat from.
Modifications
I will have a word wall and for those students that finish quickly I can have them copy from my
word wall as well as go over vocabulary cards. I will also have some copy work available for
different
