Instructional Ethnocentrism – view that one’s group is superior

When an individual become Ethnocentric?
 When you judge the behavior and beliefs of people
who are different from you
 When you believe that there are primitive cultures,
especially if their way of life is different from yours
 When you believe that some cultures are backward
if they lack the technology and consumerism of
your own culture

Cultural Relativism - belief that culture is relative and


different from one another, thus, it is important to respect
other culture

Cultural Relativist – someone who believes and sees


culture as relative, meaning they do not judge other people’s
practices and understand that there is no such thing as right
or wrong, nor good or bad when it comes to culture

Xenocentrism – refers to a preference for the foreign. A


strong belief that one’s own products, styles, or ideas are
inferior to those which originated elsewhere

Example:

Xenophobia – the fear of what is perceived as foreign or


strange

Culture Shock – the feeling of stress and anxiety that most


people experience when encountering a culture different
