DAVAO

DEL SUR
PROVINCE OF DAVAO DEL SUR

Before the creation of the province on May 8, 1967, the undivided province of Davao where
Davao del Sur belonged, and Davao City which is the capital of old Davao shared the same
history.

 Republic Act No. 4867 established the province of Davao Del Sur on May 8, 1967, by
the former Congress. It became a province on July 1, 1967, with only ten (10)
municipalities, with Digos serving as the capital.

 The province derived its name from the word “Daba-Daba”. This is a bagobo word that
used to refer to a “Sacred Brass” that belonged to the legendary bagobo chieftain
named Datu Duli.

 The addition of the letter "O" to the word that symbolized justice for the Bagobos
served to illustrate the equitable way in which Datu Duli administered justice to his
community. Over time, the term "Daba-Daba" was abbreviated to "Daba-o," eventually
evolving into the pronunciation "Davao."

 In the pre-colonial era, Davao del Sur had a lot of indigenous groups. Various
indigenous groups, including the Bagobo, Mandaya, Manobo, and B'laan, lived in
what is now Davao del Sur before the Spanish invasion. These tribes were distinct in
their cultures, traditions, and languages.

 Tourism and Development in Davao del Sur has increased in recent years due to its
natural attractions, which include stunning beaches, mountains, and cultural sites. The
province's economy has become more diverse, with tourism playing a larger role
alongside agriculture.
