WELCOME TO DAVAO
HISTORY AND PROFILE OF DAVAO REGION
The history of the region dates back to the times when various tribes occupied the region. It is
believed that the Manobos,Mandayas,Kalagans, and the Bagobos occupied the area. These are the
same tribes that created the small settlements and communities that eventually became
MINDANAO.

 1903 – 1914 – the Davao region was a district of the former Moro Province, which was replaced by an
American Colonial Agency called Department of Sulu and Mindanao. • 1942 – during the Japanese occupation in
the country, Davao region was one of the first subjected by the invaders. The Japanese immigrant in Davao
enacted as the Fifth Column, welcome the Japanese during World War II.
During the Pre-colonial period, the Davao Gulf was already in contact with the Europeans as early as 16th
century and later was preceded by the Spaniards who colonized the region.

January 1546 – Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest preached the Catholic Gospel to the region for a year and a half. It
is confirmed by some of the writers of the 17th century and in the Bull of canonization issued in 1623. It is also
said that he is the one who have preached the Gospel in Mindanao. St. Francis Xavier

1847 – an adventurous Spanish businessman named Don Jose Oyanguren arrived in the region and attempted
to conquer the region which Datu Bago is the ruler.

Datu Bago - successfully intercepted the Don Oyanguren but chieftain eventually evacuated his people near
the areas of Apo. • This is the time the town of Davao, then called Nueva Vergara by the Spaniards, was
established in the year 1848.
By the time Americans defeat the Spaniards, they subsequently developed the region. During this period, farm
ownership grew and Japanese migrations began in Davao as two entrepreneurs Kyosaburo Ohta(left image) and
Yoshizo Furokawa(right image) were finding better agricultural lands in the area.

1945 – the Battle of Davao took place, the fight for freedom of the Philippine and American forces. • Before the
Philippine independence in 1946, Davao was only a single province and May 1967 it was separated into 3
province; Davao Del Norte, Davao Del Sur and Davao Oriental which Davao City as the regional center. • 1990 –
the Port of Davao was opened and became the first Philippine international port to be established. • September
2001 – Executive Order No. 36 was enacted for the formation of the present region 11 and the provinces of South
Cotabato and Saranggani were to Region 12.
Davao Region, designated as Region XI, is situated in the southeastern portion of Mindanao. It
covers a total area of 20,357.42 sq. km. And consists of five provinces namely: DAVAO DEL
SUR, DAVAO DEL NORTE, DAVAO ORIENTAL, DAVAO DE ORO and DAVAO OCCIDENTAL. Its
regional center is DAVAO CITY, the region’s premier city.

CULTURE OF DAVAO REGION

Davao City/Region is home to at least 10 major


indigenous tribes, both Islamized and Non
Islamized, as well as migrant settlers (mostly
Christianized) from all over the Philippines and a
growing global community of ex-patriates with
different languages, cultural, tradition, religious
beliefs, and political persuasions.
TRADITION OF DAVAO REGION

The Kadayawan Festival was previously held third week


of august highlighting the 11 tribes of Davao City. In
2019, the usual week long celebration was held for a
whole month, from august 1 to 31
The KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL is thinks giving to nature for
the harvest and life in general, held in the city DAVAO in
the Philippines. It is organized every third week of august
annually. In ancient times, the people of Davao came to
Mount Apo to show gratitude to their deity. They offered
fruits, farm products, vegetables, and rice as a gift.
TOURIST SPOTS OF DAVAO REGION
Mount Apo is a large solfataric, potentially-active
stratovolcano in the island of Mindanao, Philippines. With
an altitude of 2,954 meters (9,692 ft) above sea level, it is
the highest mountain in the country and is located between
Davao City and Davao del Sur province in Region XI and
Cotabato province in Region XII.

D’Bone Collector Museum. Small museum
founded by American Bone Collector, Darrell D.
Blatchley, and opened in 2012 with the hope of
educating people to take care of the environment
(some of the marine animals displayed died as a
result of ingesting plastic, for example). The
collection, which has over 200 skeletons.

The Davao Crocodile Park is an establishment that


showcases a ‘state of the art’ crocodile farming
system in the Philippines. It has the most recent
crocodile farm design equipped with modern
facilities and equipment.
The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) is an 8.4-hectare area
located at the foothills of Mt. Apo in Malagos, Baguio
District, Davao City and situated within the Malagos
Watershed. The Philippine Eagle Center primarily operates
as a conservation breeding facility for the critically
endangered Philippine Eagle and other birds of prey.
