GODAVARI
• Second largest river inside India and the
longest river of southern India.
• Rises from the Trimbak Plateau in the Nasik
district and forms a large delta along with
Krishna in the Bay of Bengal.
• Known as the ‘Vriddha Ganga‘.
• Projects – Jayakwadi
• Tributaries : Indravati, Wardha, Sabari, Sileru,
Manjra etc.

• Most important right bank tributary of the
Godavari, rises from the Balaghat Range in
Maharashtra and flows through Karnataka and
Andhra Pradesh
• Nizam Sagar is built on it in Andhra Pradesh
near Nizamabad.
• Tributaries - Tirna, Manar, valdi

• Left bank tributary,rises from the Ajanta
Range within the Gautala Wildlife Sanctuary of
Maharastra.
• Meets Godavari nearby Nanded city
• Drains in the rain shadow region of
Marathwada through the districts of
Aurangabad,Buldana,Jalna,Hingoli & parbhani.
• Yeldari Dam and Siddheshwar Dam

• Important left bank tributary,rises from the
eastern part of the Mahadeo Hills in Madhya
Pradesh and after joining the Penganga it
becomes Pranhita which forms boundary
between Maharashtra and Andhra Peadesh
• Short boundary between MP and Maharashtra
• Tribturies: Pench , Kanhan , Mul
• Cities: Balaghat , Bhandara , Gadchiroli

• Important left bank tributary,rises from the
Eastern Ghats in Odisha.
• Flows through the Bastar Plateau and forms
boundary between Maharashtra and
Chhattisgarh before joining the Godavari
• City - Jagdalpur-main city of Bastar region
• Chitrkoot Water fall is formed by the river
• Known as the Lifeline of Bastar District

• Leftn bank tributary, originates from the western
slopes of Eastern Ghats in Odisha from Sinkaram
hill ranges
• Also known as Kolab river in Odisha.
• Forms boundary between Chhattisgarh and
Odisha and meets Godavari in Andrapradesh
• Upper Kolab project, located in Odisha across the
Sabari

• Known as Machkund in its upper reaches, is
the major tributary of the Sabari
• Originates from the Eastern Ghats in Odisha
• High potential for hydro electricity generation
• Machkund, Balimela, upper Sileru, Donkarayi
and lower Sileru hydro power projects.
• Reservoirs - Jalaput, Machhkund, Balimela
• Dudma Falls after the Machhkund Reservoir

1. BHIMA
• Left bank tributary,rises near Pune in the
Matheron Hills of the Western Ghats and
flows through Maharashtra and Karnataka.
• also referred to as Chandrabhaga River
• Joins the Krishna 26 km away from Raichur.
• Flows through Bhimashankar Wildlife
Sanctuary
• Tributaries -Mula , Mutha God, Nira , Sina ,
Bari, Kagna.
• Many dams on its course

• Rises in the Mahabaleshwar in the Western
Ghats
• Koyna Dam,largest HEP in Maharashtra is on it
• The Rservoir -Shivasagar Lake is of 50 km in
length

• Meets Krishna at near Sangli in Haripur,
• Also known as Sangameswar.
• Kadvi HEP is loacted on its tributary,the Kadvi
river.
• Varna Irrigation Project is in Sangli District

• Right Bank Tributary.
• Rises in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra in
the Western Ghats and flows through
Kolhapur district and Belgaum district of
Karnataka.
• forms part of the boundary between
Karnataka and Maharashtra.
• The Kallamawadi Dam, a joint project of
Karnataka and Maharashtra is built on it.

• originates in the Western Ghats and joins the
Krishna at Almatti
• Tributaries - Hiranyakeshi , Markandeya

• Gokak Falls is located in the Belgaum district
of Karnataka

• A right bank tributary in Karnataka rises from
the Western Ghats in Belgaum district and
joins the Krishna at Kudalasangam in the
Bagalkot district
• Tributaries - Bennihalla , Hirehalla , Tuparihalla
• Reservoirs- Navilatirtha Dam
• Temples Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami
(UNESCO Heritage)are located on its bank

• A major right bank tributary , rises from the Western
Ghats near the Baba Budan Hills.
• Joins the Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, few kms
downstream of Kurnool.
• Formed after the confluence of the Tunga and
Bhadra.
• Tungabhadra Reservoir near Hospet.
• Tributaries: Varada , Hagari, Chikka Hagari.
• Forms a short boundary between Karnataka and
Andhra Padesh.
• Cities: Hospet, Hampi, Kurnool.

• Last important left bank tributary.
• Originates near Mahabubabad town of
Warangal District, Telangana
• Found completely inside Pre-divided Andhra
Pradesh.
• City: Khammam.

• Important left bank tributary of the Krishna
• Rises in the Balaghat Range(Anantgiri Hills) in
the Telangana Plateau.
• Hyderabad is located on its bank.
• Osman sagar and Himayat sagar reservoirs are
built across the river.
• Hussain Sagar Reservoir is built on its
tributary.
