Summary Narrative:
Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has agreed to sign the new law that indicates
mandatory SIM card registration for which marks his first move as president. Under the given law, individuals
must register their SIM cards in the given time if not it will be deactivated. Supporters also have stated that
having such a controversial step may help to combat scams, and help to enhance the security of the subject in
terms of privacy. Thus assist in monitoring the activities of the citizens.
It can be stated that the law primarily aimed at preventing scams such as the one that hit Justin, a 27 years old
stylist who lost her savings in a matter of hours. A man instructed her to send him money for her order
products but things went downways as soon the transaction was done. Losing 50, 000 pesos where the man
stopped answering her calls.
While the law aims to enhance the security of privacy it still can't change the fact that there is no direct
contact between the subject and agent that leads people to fear and not to trust such a plan. However
According to Send Grace Poe "a good first step in combating text scams as well as other cyber crimes" She
explained that the pandemic brought the era of text scams and as the new law rises it will help to stop such
conflict.
Having over 150 million SIM cards in the Philippines, the potential of data breaches and misuse of personal
information is a high risk, however with the given law it may help to gradually boost the security of the agents
and monitor their history with regards to people who have the discussion. Although there are some that
question such law, officials still state that it will be the best approach to counteract such risk.
