PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
I. INTRODUCTION
If you sow a seed in your garden or in a pot, after a few days you will find a
tiny seedling coming out of the seed. As the days pass, the tiny seedling grows in size,
the number of leaves increases, and later, it grows into a mature plant that produces
flowers and fruits. This is the process of growth. Besides growth, plants also show
movement, but it is not as clearly visible as in the case of animals. Therefore, you will
learn about growth, development, and movements in plants. You must have noticed
that all living organisms grow in size. But have you ever thought about how they
grow? Growth takes place due to cell division, which increases the number of cells in
the body. This process continues, and we observe increases in the weight, size, and
volume of all plants and animals. This is called growth.
Growth in living organisms is not uniform throughout the life span. Growth
takes place at a faster rate until the plants or animals attain maturity. Then it slows
down, and at a particular time it stops. Later in life, death occurs. All these changes
that occur in an organism starting from its beginning until its death may be
collectively termed "development." Development is associated with morphogenesis
and differentiation. Morphogenesis is the process of developing the shape and
structure of an organism, and differentiation is the process of changing cells, tissues,
or organs to carry out different functions.
II. OBJECTIVES
1. To plant growing crop and observe its growth from germination to maturity
2. Measure the growth from germination to maturity
3. Describe the plant’s growth in every stage of its life cycle
4. Evaluate and discuss the locus of the plant’s growth
III. PROCEDURE
1. At the start of the class, look for the planting area or 6 pots. Plant at least
two types of legumes seeds, three pots of each kind
2. Observe the growth of the plants form germination to maturity. Measure the
growth of the plant every 3 days from the time of germination until maturity
3. Record the different events that happen to your plant like date of
germination, flowering (75%), pod development and pod maturity.
4. Measure/gather different data needed ( tabulated)
a. Plant Height (cm)
b. Pod length (cm)

IV. QUESTION/DISCUSSION
2. What is the growth curve or sigmoid curve? Name the four phases of the growth
curve and describe each
Lag Phase - In the first 3 days after germination the lag phase occur by I think
the plant adjust or adapt itself to the environment.

Log Phase - When the time that the plant produce its own branches which cell
division happen
Diminishing Phase – when the time the branches produce of its own leaves.
Steady Phase – when the plant are produce a own pod it is the time when it
height stop because the nutrient will go in its fruits
3. Using the data you gathered, describe the growth of your plants at three stages of
growth: vegetative, reproductive and pod development/ pod filling stages.
As I describe the plant I planted think that the plant (cowpea and Monggo)
are rapidly increase their size, height feature when they are in seedling stage
or in vegetative growth, and when the plant are in the productive growth, it
would slowly and have small the amount of produce it leaves and the the
reach the pod development the height of the plant become steady while the
pod continued to grow.
2 November 12 It has big leaves, and the color of its leaves is dark
02, 2022 green, and the upper part has nodes.
November 15 In that day's heavy rain, I used plastic bags as a
05, 2022 shelter. Cowpeas or any legume plant should not be
susceptible to water.
November 23 More leaves are produced, and the height also
08, 2022 improves. I observed that it was healthy. This plant
doesn’t need any inorganic fertilizer to grow.
November 27.94 The shoots grow into branches with their own
11, 2022 leaves.
November 28 More shoots and leaves, as well as height and color,
14, 2022 will be produced by the Pot 2.
November 31 The leaves have a white spot, and weeds are
17, 2022 growing. I do some weeding and water the plant.
November 32 The small white spot has grown rapidly. My father
20, 2022 suggests applying pesticide to kill it and make the
plant healthy.
November 34 I've noticed that the plant is growing and that the
24, 2022 affected leaves are already producing after applying
pesticide.
November 35 These days, the pot 2 produces its own flower.
27, 2022
November 37 The flower turns into a small pod.

3 November 12 Pot 3 plants are healthy, with two leaves and a strong
02, 2022 stem.
November 19 The third pot has grown faster than the first and
