DESIGN FEATURES REPORT 3C

Calc. by Date Chk'd by Date App'd by Date

1 Introduction
This Structural Design Features Report is provided to Tasman District Council on behalf of Prospec Structures Ltd, as part of the Building
Consent application for the design of new steel warehouse located at 377 Waimea West Road, Brightwater. It comprises the following
documents:
 Structural Calculations
 Geotechnical and Foundation Report issued by Eliot Sinclair & Partners Ltd dated 20 May 2022.
 Producer Statement (PS1) signed by a qualified CPEng Structural Engineer for the structural elements listed below in accordance
with clause B1 of the Building Regulations.

These calculations are intended to show Building Code Compliance of the following items:
 Design of Foundation
 Shallow footing for the Main Structure
 Shallow footing for the Mezzanine area
 Shallow footing for the Equipment under the Mezzanine area

1.1 Means of Compliance

This document provides design calculations for the structural elements as required & listed below (refer to the contents section) and is
to be submitted as part of a Building Consent Application. It encompasses all the above documents, and together with these
demonstrates the means of achieving Building Code Compliance via Specific Engineering Design as an Acceptable Solution.
Design is in accordance with the Building Act 2004 (reprinted 5 August 2013), Building Regulations 1992 (reprinted 10 April 2013) and
to MBIE Clause B1 – Structure.
Loadings are in accordance with:
 AS/NZS 1170.0:2002 – Structural Design Actions: General principles
 AS/NZS 1170.1:2002 – Structural Design Actions: Permanent, imposed and other actions.
 AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 – Structural Design Actions: Wind actions.
 AS/NZS 1170.3:2011 – Structural Design Actions: Snow and Ice actions.
 NZS 1170.5:2004 – Structural Design Actions: Earthquake actions – New Zealand

Design is in accordance with the relevant AS/NZS material codes as appropriate, including but not limited to:
 NZS 3101:2006 – Concrete Structures Standard
 NZS 3404:1997 – Steel Structures Standard
 NZS 3603:1993 – Timber Structures Standard
 NZS 3604:2001 – Timber-Framed Buildings
 NZS 4230:2004 – Design of Reinforced Concrete Masonry Structures
 NZS 4229:2013 – Concrete Masonry Buildings Not Requiring Specific Engineering Design

The design will include accepted current practice and advice from ENZ, SESOC, NZSEE and/or documents issued by the MBIE, as
appropriate at the time of the preparation of the Structural Calculations.

2 The Structure
The design life of the structure is 50 years with Importance Level 2.
The building is composed of series of steel frame and will be used as processing and cold storage facility covering an area of 47.0m x
60.0m. The structure is made up of series of portal frames reaching up to 32.0m in span and 9.0m height. There is a mezzanine area to
support processing equipment where the structure goes up to 16.0m.
The main structure roof gravity loading is supported by the steel purlins which is carried by the portal frame and into the foundation.
The mezzanine floor is also made up to steel structure, part of the L1 mezzanine is concrete while the rest is made up of steel walkway.
The lateral actions from the main structure are distributed using steel struts and tension-only rods acting as diaphragm into the portal
along the transverse direction and into the braced frame along the longitudinal direction (using tension-only rods). The mezzanine is
composed of portal frames along the longitudinal direction and braced frame along the transverse direction. Above RL +6.1, the
mezzanine is composed of portal & braced frame using SHS. The platform at RL +6.1 serves as transfer level of the lateral system.

3 Soil conditions
The site is categorised as class D in accordance with NZS 1170.5:2004.

3.1 Shallow Foundation

Shallow foundations are considered suitable using an ultimate bearing capacity of 300kPa. Using a strength reduction factor or 0.5, the
design bearing capacity reduces to 150kPa. The footings should have a minimum embedment of 700mm below the finished ground
level.
Heavy footing is used to resist the uplift actions from the roof.
