Title : Asthenosphere and Convection Current

Introduction :
This written report discusses what is an Asthenosphere and Convection
Details of Work :
The asthenosphere plays a significant role in the Earth’s mantle convection
currents. The asthenosphere is a semi-fluid layer of the Earth’s mantle located just
below the rigid lithosphere. It consists of partially molten rock and has a relatively
low viscosity compared to the solid rock above it.
Convection currents in the mantle are driven by heat from the Earth’s interior.
Heat from the core and radioactive decay in the mantle causes material in the
asthenosphere to become hotter and less dense. As a result, this less dense
material rises while cooler, denser material from the surrounding mantle sinks.
This movement of material in the asthenosphere sets up convection currents in the
mantle.
These convection currents are responsible for the movement of tectonic plates on
the Earth’s surface. When hot material rises and cooler material sinks, it can drag
tectonic plates along with it, causing plate motion. This is known as plate
tectonics, and it results in processes like the formation of mountain ranges, the
opening of ocean basins, and the creation of earthquakes and volcanoes.
In summary, the asthenosphere’s semi-fluid nature and heat-induced buoyancy
are essential components of the convection currents in the Earth’s mantle, which,
in turn, drive the movement of tectonic plates and shape the Earth’s surface.

improving infrastructure resilience, advancing science, and educating people about
Earth’s dynamic processes.
