I. TITLE: Benefits of Mainstreaming Herbal Medicine in the Philippine Healthcare System

II. SUMMARY

There are a various problems that continue to plague the Philippine health-care system. In the Philippines,
the cost of branded drugs is 22 times higher than international reference prices, while generic drugs are 4 times
higher. Access to medicines and care from physicians and other healthcare professionals is particularly
difficult in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas where people are physically or economically
inaccessible. Traditional Filipino medicine, in which herbal medicine plays a significant part, has existed for
generations and is widely recognized in rural regions. In order to establish an evidence-based practice of herbal
medicine, it is necessary to validate the use of these traditional medicinal herbs via study.

III. NURSING IMPLICATIONS

A. To Nursing Practice

The main areas of this research are (1) herbal medicine quality and standardization, (2) preclinical
pharmacological assessments and action mechanisms, and (3) clinical efficacy and safety assessments. As a
student nurse and as aimed by this article it is to develop safe and effective as well as low-cost Philippine
herbal medicines, could be a long-term solution to the preceding obstacles to a healthy population. In addition,
this is to have knowledge that our medicinal plants in the Philippines are a significant but underutilized
resource with several uses for non-communicable and communicable disease indications.

B. To Nursing Education

Several of the articles in this issue provide evidence for the usage of the therapeutic herbs listed. The
Institute of Herbal Medicine's founder, the NIRPROMP, is still a vital component. So, in our field, producing
more herbal medications for primary health care will reduce our reliance on pharmaceutical imports and boost
drug accessibility even in geographically inaccessible places. Bringing the herbal medicine gardens back to the
barangays in rural areas would also help to empower the people.

C. To Nursing Research

Lagundi and Sambong, according to the research, have been integrated into the clinical practice of
physicians in the Philippines, even specialists. They have been scientific and commercial successes.9 Their
production has contributed to the Philippine Pharmaceutical Industry's income and growth, as well as
enhanced the economic condition of farmers who cultivate these crops. Furthermore, the integration of herbal
medicines into mainstream clinical practice can only be feasible if non-clinical and clinical research is
conducted.

IV. PERSONAL INSIGHTS

I agree with the study because it can help people understand that Filipino traditional medicine, in which
herbal medicine plays a significant part, has been practiced for generations and is widely accepted in rural
areas. Bringing the herbal medicine gardens back to the barangays in rural areas would also help to empower
the people.
