Natural desasters happen all over the world. They can be totally devastrating, they cause a huge loss.
Somethimes thousends of people are killed, and hundred of homes are destroyed. Since these
chatastophes are coused by nature, we can’t do anything to prevent them. We can only be prepared
when they arrive. Natural desasters include many types of natural events: floods, droughts,
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes, heat and cold waves,
tsunamis, fires, landslides and avalanches just to name a few.

One common natural disaster is flooding, which happens when a river overflows its banks
and the water spills out. This is more likely to happen when there is heavy rain for a short period or
light rain for many days and weeks. Snow melting can also result in flooding. When heavy Snow over
the winter says unmelted and the temperature rises, the ice suddenly melts. The huge amount of
water can overflow the area.

Another common natural disaster is eathquake. It is caused big damages such as the
destruction of bildings, the destuction of infrastructure and the loss of lives. An earthquake under
the water can also cause a tsunami. The quake causes great waves that travel long distances. As the
waves rush across the ocean they increase. Sometimes the tsunami is so violent that it destroys all
the things, that are near it and kills a lot of people. Tsunamis can also be caused by underwater
volcanic eruptions. Volcanic eruptions are another natural disaster. The lawa of the volcano pours
out over the nearby area. Huge quantities of gas and dust are also often released during a volcanik
eruption.

One of the most common natural disasters is forest fire or wildfire. It happens in many
countries all over the world. It is an uncontrolled fire which often begins unnoticed. Some of the
things that start with the wildfire can be the sun’s heat, lightning, man-made campfires, smoking and
many other things. Wildfires speard quickliy especially in hot, dry weather. The dry plants, bushes,
trees and sometimes homes and agricultural lands also catch fire.

In Hungary the most dangerous and frequent natural disasters are floods and droughts.
Extreme flooding has happend several times int he previous years, especially in spring. There was a
state of emergency in some areas among the Danube. Solders, emergency workers, police officers
and volunteers dealt with the situation and tried to help the suffering families. Sometimes there are
also light earthquakes and heat alerts. Forest fires and windstorms are less frequent, therefore they
can be regarded as less important.

When a natural disaster occurs there is often a panik int hat region. No place int he world is
comlpetely free from disasters. After a disaster people’s homes are destroyed, many people become
injuried, dead or homeless. Those who survive can’t do anything but pick up the peaces and continue
living.
